    Compassionate staff, smooth move-in experience

I'm very pleased with the compassionate, professional staff and the smooth admissions process - Brian's hands-on support made move-in easy and administration (Sam Horowitz) is responsive. The community feels clean, safe and family-like with attentive nursing/case management, reliable meds and therapy, good meals and lots of engaging activities, giving me real peace of mind. I would gladly recommend this place to others.

    Summary of reviews

Island Assisted Living receives a substantial number of positive comments for its interpersonal care, communal programming, and facility amenities. Reviewers frequently highlight caring, attentive staff members, a family-like atmosphere, and 24/7 front-desk presence that contribute to a sense of safety. Clinical supports noted in the reviews include on-site medical visits, regular physical therapy, medication administration, and active case management; these services are credited with improving mobility, social engagement, and overall well-being for many residents. Families also cite proactive communication, transparent monthly billing ledgers, and helpful admissions and finance staff as strengths.

Dining, activities, and amenities are recurring strengths. The facility offers communal dining in a well-appointed dining room, daily room-cleaning and laundry services, transportation for appointments and excursions, and a wide range of social programming: movies, birthday and holiday parties, day trips, religious services, and a variety of clubs and outings. On-site extras such as a library, computers, beauty parlor, and therapy rooms support residents’ recreational and rehabilitative needs. Multiple reviewers described the environment as clean, well-managed, and conducive to socialization, with quiet private rooms and lively common areas.

Despite these positives, the reviews reveal several operational concerns prospective residents and families should evaluate. Staffing instability and short-staffing were raised repeatedly and are linked in some comments to workload strain for aides and variable responsiveness to resident needs. Food quality and menu variety are described as inconsistent by different families, and a few reviewers indicated declines in dining quality over time. While many accounts praise medication administration and clinical oversight, other reviewers raised serious concerns about medication management and financial-administration practices; these have been characterized in some accounts as allegations and warrant careful inquiry.

Other patterns include variable management responsiveness—some families praised hands-on administrators who promptly addressed issues, while others described inconsistent follow-up after incidents. Sanitation and cleanliness inconsistencies were mentioned alongside mainly positive cleanliness comments, suggesting uneven performance in some areas. Safety oversight for unsupervised residents (for example, wandering in parking areas) and a smoking area near the main entrance that affects common-area air quality were also noted. Finally, private rooms are limited, so availability can be constrained.

In summary, Island Assisted Living appears to offer strong person-centered care, active programming, and useful on-site amenities that many families find reassuring. At the same time, recurring themes around staffing stability, food consistency, medication- and finance-related allegations, and occasional lapses in operational oversight suggest areas for careful due diligence. Prospective families should tour the facility, ask about current staffing ratios and turnover, review medication-management and incident-reporting protocols, confirm private-room availability, and request up-to-date information on any operational improvements the administration has implemented.

    About Island Assisted Living

Island Assisted Living sits in Hempstead, New York, close to Cedar Street Park and James M. Shuart Stadium, and it really does try to make senior living comfortable and friendly because you walk in and you see a variety of lively spaces, with a fitness room, a beauty parlor, a quiet library for reading, and a big well-designed dining room where people gather, eat, and share good food that's ranked among the top 7% for meals and dining, prepared under the watch of a certified dietician, and with restaurant-style service. The building's got a mix of private and semi-private rooms, and while some folks like the peaceful corners, others join in the vibrant common areas or activities like movie nights, holiday parties, and off-site trips, so it doesn't feel lonely. The place runs as a New York ALP Medicaid Program Participating Assisted Living Facility, and their care team, made up of compassionate local advisors and highly trained staff, helps match residents and families with the right care options-so you find assistance with daily living tasks, complex medical needs, memory care, nursing home support, or just independent living, all under one roof, with 24/7 staff and medical support always near. There's housekeeping, laundry, and case management services you don't have to worry about, and every resident gets a personalized care plan because the philosophy at Island Assisted Living is to foster hope, warmth, and friendship, believing, as their mission states, "No one is an 'Island' unto themselves." The community encourages seniors to make friends and stay independent while getting the support they need, and the staff focuses on quality care day and night. Families can learn all about the place by visiting in person, walking through the Island Experience tour, or looking at the Island Gallery, with a director of admissions ready to set up guided visits during office hours Monday through Friday, with visitation allowed every day. There's no charge to families for their advisory and matching services, and the community aims to meet different needs and budgets, giving everyone a chance to find a safe, friendly, and comfortable place to call home, where activities, entertainment, medical care, and daily meals come together in a supportive atmosphere designed with seniors in mind.
