    Generally excellent care with caveats

I placed my mom at Hilltop and overall had an excellent experience - kind, professional and attentive staff, top-notch PT/OT and wound care, clean bright facility, delicious meals, and engaging activities that created a family atmosphere and helped her regain abilities. That said, care can be inconsistent at times (understaffing, slow responses, occasional cleanliness/meal issues), so I stayed involved. I recommend Hilltop for rehab or long-term care, but be prepared to monitor care closely.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is mixed but leans positive, with a strong majority highlighting the facility’s strengths in rehabilitation, therapy, and compassionate bedside care. A recurring and prominent theme is excellence in physical and occupational therapy — multiple reviewers describe therapists as “awesome,” “top-notch,” and pivotal in enabling residents to regain independence after surgeries (hip, knee) and return home. Several specific rehabilitation-related praises include successful discharge planning, help preparing a home for return, wound care, and a generally high return-to-home rate. For families seeking short-term rehab with a focus on mobility and functional recovery, Hilltop is frequently recommended.

Staff performance is another major positive theme: many reviews emphasize kind, attentive, and personable CNAs, nurses, and support staff who treat residents like family. Reviewers frequently mention warm gestures (hugs, singing, holding hands), thorough guidance, and strong advocacy for patients, including help navigating insurance and communicating with doctors. Administrative staff are often viewed as helpful and courteous, and reviewers note concrete conveniences such as punctual transportation, hospitality carts, extra meal trays, and good communication that provide reassurance to families.

Facility and environment commentary is largely favorable: multiple reviewers report a clean, bright, and cheery environment with no typical “nursing home smell,” fresh paint, and attentive housekeeping. Holiday and activity programming receives high marks — reviewers mention engaging activities, special holiday events (Christmas lights contest, Christmas Eve service), spiritual gatherings, and staff who socialize with residents. These elements contribute to a family-like atmosphere and strong emotional support for residents and families.

However, there are important and recurring concerns that temper the positive feedback. Understaffing and inconsistent staffing levels are repeatedly mentioned, and these shortages are linked to long call-button delays and slow responses to resident needs. Several reviewers describe experiencing poor responsiveness or rude behavior from specific nursing staff, and a subset of reviews emphasizes that care quality can be inconsistent: the best outcomes often appear tied to residents whose families actively monitor care. This suggests variability across shifts or units and a dependence on oversight for consistently good care.

Sanitation and maintenance issues appear as conflicting but notable patterns: while many describe the facility as clean and well-kept, a number of reviews report unsanitary conditions including urine smells, dirty shared bathrooms, and isolated instances of dirty rooms. Dining impressions are similarly mixed — many praise the food, new menu items, and hot meals, but others report old or poor-quality meals. Small operational problems are also mentioned (e.g., missing TV remotes, delayed addressing of concerns) alongside the many positive mentions of dining staff going above and beyond.

Other themes to note: a few reviewers express concern about restrictions such as door alarms and limited outdoor access, which some feel reduce resident freedom. Several reviews claim limited skilled nursing or rehabilitation in contrast to the many favorable therapy reports, indicating that experiences may vary depending on the type of care needed or the unit. Finally, while the majority of feedback is positive and many strongly recommend Hilltop, there are a small number of very negative reviews calling the facility “terrible” and urging others to avoid it — these outliers underscore the variability in experiences and the importance of individualized assessment.

In summary, Hilltop Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation is frequently praised for its rehabilitation programs, compassionate and personable staff, and welcoming atmosphere, making it a strong option for patients focused on therapy and returning home. At the same time, prospective residents and families should be aware of recurring concerns about staffing consistency, response times, and occasional sanitation issues. Those considering Hilltop would benefit from asking specific questions about staffing ratios and monitoring response times, visiting during different shifts to gauge consistency, and maintaining close communication with staff to help ensure the positive experiences many reviewers describe.

About Hilltop Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation

Hilltop Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation sits at 910 W Polk Ave, right in Charleston, Illinois, and has been around since 2007 as a privately owned limited liability company, and you'll notice when you walk up, the grounds are well kept with spots for residents to enjoy some fresh air. This place focuses on senior care, long-term stays, and skilled nursing, and operates every day, all day-so there's always staff around for help. Hilltop falls under many categories including senior living, rest home, and physical therapy, and they're run by Covenant Care with Clinic Administrator Latasha Garner overseeing things, so you get both rehab services and different programs for folks who need help with memory care, end-of-life care, and therapy after things like strokes, heart issues, or joint surgeries.

Rooms are set up for privacy or sharing, and there's a mix of modern amenities and old-fashioned hospitality, though reviews mention the rooms could use more regular cleaning and that the food's not the best-they do plan menus and offer an always available menu too, in case someone doesn't want what's served. Staff are around 24/7 including aides and nurses, and there's some mention in reviews about help with insurance and the friendliness of aides not always being great, but the facility does have internal medicine practitioners and a trained care team. Residents can join in group activities, wellness programs, and social events, giving them chances to stay engaged and active during their stay.

Hilltop also sets up care for folks who only need to stay a little while, like respite care or rehab with a goal to go home again, and then they help people plan for long-term comfort if staying longer is needed. They work hard on physical, speech, and occupational therapy, and they give support for family caregivers too, including guidance on long-term care and insurance. There's specialized programs for Parkinson's, cardiac rehab, orthopedic recovery, stroke, memory care, hospice, and palliative support-so most every senior care service is offered under one roof. Though Hilltop has an A+ rating on the Better Business Bureau, the place isn't accredited by them, which some families like to check. Virtual tours are available for people who can't come in person and they're open to folks touring in person if anyone wants to see the facility before making decisions.

So while Hilltop doesn't claim to be perfect, it does provide many services seniors and their families might need, with a supportive, homelike environment and skilled medical staff, all focused on helping people regain strength and live as comfortably as possible.
