    Clean, friendly staff; verify management

I toured and applied and overall was impressed: the facility is clean, neat, and beautifully kept with lovely outdoor spaces and very friendly, professional staff (Sarah was especially helpful). Units are quiet and well-appointed with nice closets, free on-floor laundry, a great recreation room and bus/house services, but most apartments are smaller than I wanted. Activities, meals and housekeeping are offered though were limited by COVID and seem to be returning to a full calendar. My concerns: contacting the office and maintenance responsiveness were inconsistent (hot water outage, broken machines), and there were reports of pests, odors and some security/management issues; the neighborhood and city driving are drawbacks. I would recommend it with reservations - great people and clean community, but verify unit size and management responsiveness first.

    Summary review

Overall impression: Reviews for Senior Suites of Marquette Village are mixed, with a clear divide between reviewers who praise staff, cleanliness, renovated apartments and activity offerings, and others who report significant operational problems like pests, security incidents, and unresponsive management. Many reviewers emphasize a pleasant, quiet atmosphere, helpful staff (with multiple comments calling out a staff member named Sarah by name), and attractive updated units and grounds. Contrastingly, there are multiple serious complaints — including bed bugs, theft and police involvement, prolonged maintenance outages, and claims of poor management responsiveness — that create notable risk signals for prospective residents.

Staff and care quality: The staff receive predominantly positive remarks where reviewers describe them as friendly, compassionate, personable and professional. Several accounts specifically praise Sarah in the office for being helpful and uplifting. Many reviewers explicitly state they would recommend the community based on staff interactions and describe staff as informative during tours. However, there are recurring staffing problems reported: front-office staffing shortages that prevent showings, inconsistent service depending on which building you approach, and difficulty reaching staff by phone (multiple days of calling with no reply). These staffing and responsiveness problems contrast with the otherwise strong customer-service anecdotes and suggest variability in day-to-day staffing levels and performance.

Facilities and apartments: Multiple reviews highlight remodeled units with new carpeting, fresh paint, included appliances and utilities in some cases. Common positive notes include nice closets, well-lit buildings, parking, and comfortable apartment sizes for some units. That said, apartment size is inconsistent in reviewers’ eyes — some say units are spacious and ideal, others find kitchens or bedrooms too small and mention tradeoffs like no tub (shower only). The recreation room, outdoor spaces, and sitting areas on each floor draw positive comments; there are gathering spots and a common-area TV. Laundry arrangements are a mixed bag: some praise free on-floor laundry while others report broken washers and outages.

Cleanliness, pests and safety: Cleanliness reports are split. Many reviewers describe clean, neat grounds and common areas; other reviews accuse the property of having unclean common spaces, back stairs that aren’t maintained, and, critically, pest problems including bed bugs with alleged inadequate extermination. Several reviewers characterize smoke (cigarette and marijuana) odors in hallways or units as a health concern. Safety impressions also vary: some residents feel very safe and praise the community’s care; others report theft incidents, police calls, and an apparent lack of security or effective management response. Reports of complaints filed, requests for surveillance footage, and mention of a possible shutdown are serious red flags that contrast sharply with other reviewers’ feelings of safety.

Management and maintenance: Management is a prominent theme with polarized opinions. Positive comments cite helpful building managers and effective service for move-ins and unit preparations. Negative comments center on poor communication, unresponsiveness to maintenance requests, and lengthy outages — one reviewer reported a two-week hot water outage and difficulty obtaining parts or timely repairs. There are also complaints about inconsistent rules across buildings and perceived laziness in management, particularly related to pest control and cleanliness. Multiple reviewers mention escalation of issues to media or municipal channels (311) to get action, indicating systemic frustrations for some tenants.

Activities and services: Activity offerings are another mixed area. Several reviewers praise a full activities calendar, frequent events, transportation to stores, and an active recreation program. Conversely, others say there is a lack of substantial activities (exacerbated by the pandemic in some reports) or that activity rooms are empty. Food service and housekeeping are mentioned as available by some reviewers, while others note there is no on-site dining facility. These mixed reports suggest activity and service levels may depend on the building, time period (pandemic restrictions), or management engagement.

Pricing and value: Affordability perceptions vary: a number of reviewers call the community reasonably priced or affordable, sometimes noting utilities included and an attractive value proposition. Others report rent increases, describe the rent as high for seniors, and note the community is not subsidized, which may limit accessibility for low-income seniors. Prospective residents should verify current pricing, subsidy options, and any history of rent adjustments.

Patterns and variability: A consistent pattern across the reviews is variation — between buildings, between staff shifts, and over time (pandemic influence). Many positives and negatives appear to coexist: excellent staff interactions and clean remodeled units for some residents versus unresolved pest issues, cleanliness lapses, and safety incidents for others. This variability suggests that experiences may depend heavily on which specific building or unit a resident occupies, which staff are working, and whether recent maintenance or management changes have occurred.

Takeaways for prospective residents: The community offers many attractive features — updated apartments, pleasant grounds, supportive staff in many cases, transportation services, and active programming in some buildings. However, there are also repeated and serious concerns about pest control, maintenance responsiveness, front-desk staffing, security and inconsistent management practices. Prospective residents or their families should: (1) ask directly about recent pest control history and extermination protocols, (2) inquire about security measures and incident history, (3) confirm maintenance response times and any recent outages (hot water, laundry), (4) verify which services (meals, housekeeping, utilities) are included in their specific building/unit, (5) request the current activities calendar and speak with current residents when possible, and (6) clarify rent, past rent increases, and subsidy availability. Given the polarized reviews, an in-person visit (or multiple visits at different times), conversations with on-site staff, and discussion with current residents will give the most reliable sense of what to expect at Senior Suites of Marquette Village.
