    Beautiful community with some lapses

I live here / placed a loved one here and overall it's a beautiful, well-maintained community with roomy apartments, great on-site amenities, active programming, and very caring, long-tenured staff who generally go the extra mile. Meals are usually good and medical/medication support is reliable. That said, communication and leadership can be inconsistent, after-hours access is awkward, and there have been occasional cleanliness and personal-care lapses-so I recommend it, but with family oversight.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews for Eagle Ridge of Decatur is broadly positive but mixed, with many reviewers praising staff, the facility, and the active community while a smaller but significant set of reviews allege serious care and management problems. The most frequent positive themes are friendly, compassionate and often long‑tenured staff; a clean, nicely renovated building; ample on‑site amenities; and a lively activity and dining program. Multiple reviewers explicitly recommend the community, call it a great place to live or work, and note administrators who are actively involved in resident well‑being. However, there are recurring negative reports that range from unpleasant (poor communication, food criticisms, delayed laundry) to severe (allegations of neglect, incontinence care failures, UTIs and infections). These contradictions suggest generally strong performance for many residents but unevenness in care or management responsiveness that has led to troubling experiences for some families.

Care and staff: A dominant strength across the reviews is staff attitude and the caregiving culture. Many reviewers describe helpful, attentive, caring CNAs and nurses, staff who "go the extra mile," and a homey, family atmosphere. Long tenures and seasoned employees are mentioned repeatedly, and some reviewers say the staff becomes like family. Several comments note practical health supports such as medication administration, blood pressure monitoring, assistance for residents with vision impairments, and call buttons in every room. At the same time, there are serious negative accounts: a subset of reviewers allege neglectful care — for example, residents not being checked on, being left in soiled clothing, incontinent care neglected, resulting weight loss or infections. There are also reports of inconsistent responsiveness, unreturned voicemails, and instances where office or management staff are described as unprofessional or unresponsive. This pattern points to generally strong bedside care for many residents but also to lapses or variability in supervision and escalation that have led to significant harm in some cases.

Facilities and amenities: Reviews consistently praise the physical plant. The building is described as beautiful, newly remodeled, clean, and well maintained. Apartments are often called roomy and practical (one‑bedrooms with big closets and kitchenettes). Accessibility features — wheelchair‑accessible bathrooms, call buttons, and thoughtful safety elements — are frequently noted, as is the facility's proximity to a hospital and family members. On‑site conveniences such as hairstyling, a convenience store, library, exercise room, laundry services, weekly apartment cleaning, puzzle spaces, and a courtyard contribute to a self‑contained community that reviewers value. A few reviewers note the community is large (over 110 units), which some prefer for variety while others would rather see a smaller, more intimate setting. There is one operational convenience concern: early door locks and after‑hours access can be difficult for visitors or residents arriving later.

Dining and housekeeping: Dining is a commonly discussed area with mixed but mostly positive feedback. Many reviewers praise the food and highlight multiple dining options (two menus plus a sandwich menu), themed meals, tasty items (lemonade called out), and a pleasant dining room atmosphere. Others describe the meals as repetitive, not tasty, or having an off smell. Housekeeping and laundry are usually cited as positive (weekly cleaning, laundry service), though this conflicts with specific reports of dirty apartments, sticky floors, odors, and delayed return of cleaned clothing (including claims of two‑week delays). These mixed reports suggest that while routines for cleaning and laundry exist and serve many residents well, there have been notable breakdowns for some individuals.

Activities and community life: Activity programming is a clear strength. Reviews list a busy calendar — Wii bowling, bingo, music groups, cooking activities, city‑wide competitions, holiday parties, monthly birthday celebrations, trips, and an annual health fair. The community is portrayed as active and social, which many reviewers see as a major asset that keeps residents engaged and thriving. Transportation to external programs (Y membership and classes) is available and appreciated, strengthening connections to the broader community.

Management, communication and safety: Several reviews commend the administrator for involvement and concern about residents, and some families praise effective communication tools (a family app). Despite these positives, management and communication are also frequent areas of complaint: unprofessional behavior from office staff or directors, unanswered calls/voicemails, and billing disputes. Safety features such as call buttons and proximity to the hospital are positives, but allegations of neglect and inconsistent care indicate potential problems with oversight, staffing levels, training, or escalation procedures. The presence of both strongly positive and strongly negative accounts suggests that leadership and quality assurance may be effective at times but may have gaps that allow serious incidents to occur.

Notable patterns and considerations: The reviews create two main impressions simultaneously. First, for many residents and families Eagle Ridge delivers a high‑quality, active, and well‑appointed community with caring staff, strong amenities, and good value — several reviewers explicitly call it the best in the area or a five‑star facility. Second, a nontrivial minority of reviews describe alarming lapses in basic care, cleanliness, communication, and management responsiveness. These negative reports are serious (neglected incontinence care, infections, weight loss) and merit careful consideration by prospective residents and families.

Given the mix of strong positives and some severe negatives, prospective residents or family members should tour the facility, meet caregiving staff and management, sample meals, review incident/complaint response procedures, and ask specific questions about staffing ratios, after‑hours access, laundry turnaround times, and memory care options. Checking recent inspection reports, requesting references from current families, and clarifying billing practices will also help evaluate whether Eagle Ridge's generally praised strengths align with an individual’s expectations and care needs. Overall, the facility receives many heartfelt endorsements for staff, amenities, and community life, but the documented instances of neglect and communication breakdowns mean due diligence is essential before moving in or recommending it without reservation.
