    Run-down facility neglectful and unacceptable

I had a mixed but mostly negative experience. The building was run-down, my medical needs were often neglected, and I encountered abusive or indifferent staff, troubling social-worker/transfer rumors, and poor therapy - I wanted out ASAP. A few caregivers were genuinely kind and the small dining area and courtyard activities were pleasant, but overall the facility quality is unacceptable.

    Summary review

The reviews for Hickory Village Nursing and Rehabilitation Center are strongly mixed, with a clear split between reviewers who describe a warm, family-like environment and those who report serious problems with care and facility conditions. Several reviewers praised the facility as a small, intimate place where residents are lovingly cared for, staff are friendly and available, and there are active courtyard activities that contribute to a pleasant daily life. These positive accounts emphasize attentive staff members, a sense of community, and good customer service, suggesting that some residents and families have very satisfactory experiences at the facility.

Conversely, a number of reviewers raise significant concerns about the physical plant and the quality of care. Words and phrases used include run-down building, abusive treatment, and neglected medical needs. Multiple accounts indicate poor overall staff quality, with several reviewers explicitly noting that there are only a few decent staff amid broader staffing problems. These negative reports are serious in nature and relate directly to resident safety and clinical care, not only to comfort or convenience.

Staffing and management issues emerge as a central theme in the negative reviews. Reviewers point to problematic interactions with the social worker, poor communication, and rumors or apparently false narratives surrounding resident transfers. These issues suggest breakdowns in transparency and trust between families and facility leadership for some residents. At the same time, positive reviews point to specific staff members who are compassionate and responsive, which indicates substantial variability in staff behavior or differences between shifts/units.

Facility amenities and environment are another mixed area. The small size of the facility is mentioned positively for creating a family-like atmosphere, yet reviewers also describe the building as run-down. The dining area is described as small, which may be a practical limitation for meals and social dining. Courtyard activities are highlighted as a distinct positive, offering outdoor engagement for residents, but the positive impact of these activities is counterbalanced by reports of negative therapy experiences and dissatisfaction with rehabilitation services voiced in several reviews.

Taken together, the reviews paint a portrait of a facility with highly inconsistent performance. Some residents and families experience excellent, compassionate care and a supportive environment, while others report neglect, poor clinical attention, or abusive behavior. This polarity suggests that experiences may depend heavily on which staff members are on duty, how management is currently operating, or which unit a resident is placed in. The presence of both strong positives and serious negatives means prospective residents and families should view the facility as one with potential strengths but also material risks.

In summary, Hickory Village Nursing and Rehabilitation Center receives both strong praise for its loving atmosphere, attentive individual staff, and active courtyard life, and strong criticism for physical condition, inconsistent staffing quality, alleged neglect or abuse, and communication/management problems. The most prominent actionable patterns from the reviews are (1) highly variable staff performance, (2) serious concerns about medical neglect and abusive treatment raised by some reviewers, and (3) a split between small-facility benefits and shortcomings in the building and shared spaces. Those considering this facility would be well-advised to investigate current staffing, speak directly with family members of current residents, observe care during multiple shifts, and ask specific questions about therapy services, social work practices, and any recent changes in management or ownership to better gauge which side of the reported spectrum the facility is presently operating on.

About Hickory Village Nursing and Rehabilitation Center

Hickory Village Nursing and Rehabilitation Center sits in Hickory Hills, Illinois, and has a smaller, 78-bed setting that lets staff give more personal care to each resident, which is important when people are going through recovery after surgery or illness or when they're dealing with more long-term health needs, and the folks working here have a good reputation for being caring and paying attention to individual needs, some of them and even some of the residents have been around for quite a while, which adds a little comfort for newcomers since it feels a bit like a close-knit place. The building's gone through recent renovations, so the living spaces and outdoor areas are more comfortable now and easier to get around, and rooms come with private bathrooms, kitchenettes, air-conditioning, and cable, plus Wi-Fi and phone service, making it a bit like home for those who stay.

They offer different kinds of care here: skilled nursing, rehab therapies like physical, occupational, and speech therapy, residential care, assisted living, memory care, and hospice care, and those with serious medical needs-like someone recovering from a hospital stay or dealing with age-related cognitive decline-can get the support they need in a safe setting, with 12-16 hour nursing every day and round-the-clock supervision and a call system for emergencies. The center also has independent living options for folks who want more freedom but still might need some help here and there, and there are home care services too, for those who rather stay in familiar surroundings.

The range of programs is broad, probably more than you'd expect from a community of this size: you've got a professional chef and kitchen team preparing meals with restaurant-style service, including special dietary needs for those with diabetes or allergies, and residents can eat in a community dining room or order meals that fit their dietary restrictions, plus there's all-day dining for people who like more flexibility; the social side's well taken care of with a game room, activity room, movie theater for regular movie nights, music and arts programs, a library, fitness center, gardens, walking paths, and outdoor activities, and folks can join in scheduled day trips or take part in resident-run groups too.

The center offers adult day care and short-term respite care to help caregivers take a break, which is handy for families; mental wellness programs and psychiatric rehabilitation mean emotional health isn't brushed aside, and staff help residents with bathing, dressing, and everyday tasks, while also managing medications and even offering discharge planning and placement services, so people get the help they need when ready to move home or on to another step. Residents can take part in activities from a monthly calendar, and family and friends are always welcome, which keeps things lively, and community life is focused on keeping residents engaged and connected through things like arts or group meals-or just enjoying the gardens or the beauty salon.

Hickory Village is a for-profit nursing home owned by a limited liability company, and it accepts both Medicare and Medicaid, making it possible for a range of folks to stay, and while it isn't part of a big continuing care retirement setup, it does provide continuing care for those who need it, covering everything from independent living to skilled nursing, so people don't have to move to another place if their health needs change. Most importantly, there's a steady group of primary care physicians, specialists, psychiatrists, and therapists on hand, giving care that's tailored to each resident with the aim of helping people regain their health, keep their independence as long as possible, and enjoy the best quality of life they can, and the overall feeling here is one of respect, warmth, and steady support, with just enough size for a good variety of amenities but small enough for staff to really know who's living here and what each person needs to feel at home.
