    Beautiful location, friendly staff, small

I'm a resident and overall very happy - beautiful Fox Riverfront location and a warm, tight-knit community. Staff are friendly, responsive and caring (Executive Director Christine goes above and beyond); housekeeping and three meals a day are included. The menu is chef-prepared and plentiful, though I wish there were more vegetables/fruit and better variety (too much starch/chicken at times). The building is clean, active (trivia, bingo, movies, outings) and good value, but apartments are on the small side, it's independent living only, and maintenance/management consistency can vary. I would recommend it with those caveats.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: Reviews of Riverside Residence are broadly positive with many reviewers emphasizing the community’s strengths: a friendly, caring staff (with repeated praise for the executive director, Christine), a prime waterfront/downtown location with direct Riverwalk access, included meals and housekeeping, and a warm, small-community atmosphere. Most reviewers describe the residence as affordable and offering good value for independent seniors who want social engagement and easy access to shops and restaurants. Multiple people reported long, happy tenures and would recommend the community to others.

Staff and care quality: The most consistent praise centers on staff warmth, professionalism, and attentiveness. Several reviews name specific staff (Christine, Kay, Liam) as going above and beyond, and many families recount smooth move-ins and responsive follow-up. On-site clinical and support services (PT/OT, therapy, and home care coordination) are noted as available, which reviewers appreciated. That said, there are important exceptions: a few reviews describe serious lapses in care or caregiver neglect that led to moving a resident out; these incidents stand in contrast to the generally positive pattern and are cited as reasons for not recommending the facility in isolated cases.

Dining: Dining is another frequently mentioned theme. Many reviewers praise chef-prepared meals, special dinners (e.g., celebrations for residents' birthdays), and the convenience of three meals a day included in rent. The kitchen staff receive repeated compliments, and meal substitutions/options are available. Conversely, several reviewers found the food average or disappointing—criticisms include too much starch or chicken, insufficient vegetables and fruit, limited diabetic/calorie-controlled selections, and general inconsistency in quality. In short, dining is generally a positive selling point but not uniformly so across all residents.

Facilities, apartments and upkeep: The residence is repeatedly celebrated for its beautiful riverfront setting, landscaping, and proximity to the Fox River and downtown McHenry. On-site amenities (library, hair salon, parking, beauty shop) and pet-friendly policies are appreciated. However, a recurring concern is apartment size and condition: many units are described as small, with some older or dated rooms, limited natural light, or layouts that feel cramped. Several reviews mention recent remodeling of some rooms, but others describe inconsistent renovations and varying room quality. Maintenance receives mixed reviews—some reviewers praise a highly skilled maintenance team, while others report slow or insufficient repairs and grounds upkeep issues like weeds.

Activities and community life: Social programming is plentiful and often well-liked—residents and families mention trivia, bingo, Happy Hour Fridays, live entertainment, movie nights, bus outings (though some say these are fewer than before), and other group activities. The small size contributes to a close-knit, home-like feel that many residents value; some reviewers emphasize strong friendships and a positive, reassuring environment. A few reviewers, however, noted cliquish dynamics among residents, which could make social integration harder for some newcomers.

Management, costs and operational concerns: Many reviewers find pricing transparent and reasonable, with included services delivering good value. Nonetheless, there are notable concerns about management and business practices in a subset of reviews. A few accounts mention a change in ownership (Riverside Operations) and related negative experiences, including an allegation that a security deposit was treated as a donation and general dissatisfaction with new management. Multiple reviews also point out that additional services (assistance beyond independent living) cost extra, and because this is primarily an independent-living community, residents who need higher levels of care may be required to relocate.

Safety, accessibility and negatives: Accessibility features (wheelchair accessibility and pull cords) are present and mentioned positively. Still, other safety and comfort issues appear: reports of smoking near the front entrance, dimly lit or maze-like hallways, and narrow corridors were noted by several reviewers. These are operational issues that affect resident and visitor experience. Overall, while many reviewers highlight security and a safe environment, some physical aspects of the building and site management make accessibility and comfort less consistent.

Recommendation and fit: Riverside Residence appears to be an excellent fit for independent seniors who prioritize a friendly staff, social programming, included meals, and a downtown waterfront location at an affordable price. The community’s small size, pet-friendly policies, and home-like feel are commonly praised. Prospective residents should, however, verify apartment size and layout, ask detailed questions about dietary accommodations (diabetic/low-calorie menus), confirm which services are included versus extra cost, and be aware that the community may not be appropriate for those who require higher-level medical or custodial care. Also consider recent management changes and seek recent references from current residents or families to ensure the current operations match the generally positive experiences reported by many reviewers.

Bottom line: The overall pattern across reviews is positive—warm, responsive staff, a desirable riverfront downtown location, included meals and housekeeping, and a vibrant small-community atmosphere. At the same time, there are consistent caveats around apartment size and condition, occasional food quality complaints, some maintenance/management inconsistencies, and isolated but serious reports of staff neglect or problematic ownership practices. These mixed signals suggest strong strengths that will suit many independent seniors, paired with specific areas to verify in person before making a placement decision.

    About Riverside Residence

Riverside Residence sits at 3516 W. Waukegan Road in McHenry, Illinois, tucked near the Fox River and the Riverwalk, pretty close to restaurants, shops, and the center of town, which some folks seem to like because you can get out, stroll down by the water, or even hop on a boat if you want, and things are easy to get to, maybe because they also offer transportation and regular shopping trips. Residents pick from different apartment types, like cozy studios, one-bedroom suites, or two-bedroom units, and the rooms have their own air and heat controls, kitchenettes, walk-in showers-some wheel-chair accessible-and Wi-Fi, which these days is always handy, plus cable if you watch TV. The staff is known for being kind and friendly, staying on site around the clock to help out with things like bathing, dressing, medication, and even memory care for residents with dementia, so families get some peace of mind about safety, and there's a call system if anyone needs urgent help.

Meals are included, served three times a day in the dining room-with the option for professional chef-cooked dishes, guest meals, or room service if you're not feeling social-and they'll take care of weekly housekeeping, change sheets, do laundry for linens and towels, and keep the apartments clean, which certainly lightens the load for folks who don't want to deal with chores. Pets are allowed, though there are some limits, and there's parking for residents and guests, which helps a lot when family stops by. There are plenty of spaces to relax or join in, like an arts and crafts room, garden patio with flowers, indoor and outdoor games areas, beauty and barber shop, fitness center, and a rec room for cards, movies, and happy hour with music on Fridays, and you'll also find devotional services both on and off site for those who want them. The building is licensed by the state, offers home care and skilled nursing for those who want to stay as their needs change, and employs trained aides and an Executive Director. They run a full calendar with lots of social and hobby activities, from art classes to bingo, movie nights, and outings, plus physical therapy services on site, so there's always something to do, whether you like taking it easy or staying active. There's a sense of community, with families encouraged to stay involved, and staff are available any time to answer questions or lend a hand, which many residents and their loved ones seem to appreciate, and the pricing is considered competitive when you compare all that's included in the way of amenities and care.
