    Welcoming clean community, small drawbacks

I'm very glad I moved here - the staff are kind, helpful and welcoming (Tiffany and Ruby stood out), the building is clean and beautifully maintained with large windows, an elevator, step-in showers, roomy studios, and lots of on-site amenities (chapel with daily Mass, meals, grocery room with no mark-up, beauty shop, laundry, outings and covered garage). Residents are friendly, the food is excellent, and the move-in was smooth. Negatives: the entrance is on a steep hill and the area can feel unsafe, common areas can be warm because A/C isn't always on and rooms rely on window units, and studios are small/no in-room oven. Overall I'd recommend a visit to see if it fits your needs.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews is strongly positive, with repeated praise for the staff, cleanliness, sense of community, and value for cost. Many reviewers describe the staff as welcoming, kind, and accommodating; specific employees like Tiffany and Ruby are singled out for exceptional help. Multiple accounts emphasize an easy and smooth move-in process and ongoing support from managers and frontline staff. Residents and families commonly use words such as "home-like," "close-knit," and "friendly" to describe the atmosphere, indicating a nurturing social environment where people feel comfortable and cared for.

Facility and building observations are consistent across reviews: St Augustine Manor is an older, well-preserved building with attractive period furnishings and large windows that many residents appreciate. The property is consistently described as clean and well-maintained. Practical amenities are a strong point — there is an elevator, a covered garage, an on-site laundromat, a beauty parlor, and a grocery room that sells items without mark-up. Most rooms have step-in showers and a full-size refrigerator; however, rooms generally lack an oven (there is an oven area elsewhere). The combination of preserved historic character and functional amenities appeals to residents who like a traditional, home-like setting.

Dining and spiritual life are notable strengths. On-site meals are frequently described as good to excellent, and there is an on‑site Catholic chapel with daily Mass, which is important to many residents. However, reviewers note that meals are often charged as an extra fee, so prospective residents should clarify meal costs and meal-plan options. The facility runs regular outings and social events, such as a weekly Wal‑Mart trip, and provides occasional catered food and on-site doctor visits, all of which support resident engagement and convenience.

Activities and social programming receive mixed remarks. Several reviews mention available activities and outgoing residents, and some praise the social life and events. At the same time, there are comments about a lack of activity in the activity room or occasions when programming feels limited. This suggests that while social opportunities exist and many residents are engaged, the breadth or frequency of organized activities may vary and could be an area for improvement depending on a prospective resident’s expectations.

There are recurring operational and location concerns worth noting. The building does not appear to have strong central air conditioning in common spaces; common areas can feel warm because the A/C is not run consistently, and many rooms rely on window A/C units. The facility sits in a neighborhood with a steep hill and a difficult entrance, and some reviewers felt the surrounding area was unsafe — issues that could matter for residents who leave the property frequently or for visitors. Some reviewers also point out that studio apartments are small and may not suit residents with many possessions. A small number of family accounts raise serious but isolated concerns about staff interaction — specifically, an instance of a family being refused access to a resident's possessions and a perceived lack of sympathy — which prospective residents or families may want to clarify with management before moving in.

In summary, St Augustine Manor is portrayed as a clean, affordable, and well-staffed not-for-profit facility with strong community feeling, good amenities, religious services, and helpful staff who make transitions easier. It is particularly attractive to people who appreciate an older, character-filled building, practical on-site services, and a caring staff. Prospective residents should weigh the trade-offs: confirm details about meal charges, assess whether the size of available units meets their needs, inquire about cooling/air-conditioning in common areas, and visit the neighborhood and entrance to ensure comfort with access and the surrounding area. Finally, families may want to discuss policies for access to personal belongings and staff protocols to avoid misunderstandings. Overall, the dominant theme is one of satisfaction and recommendation, tempered by a few location and operational caveats that are straightforward to investigate in a tour or conversation with management.

    About St Augustine Manor

St Augustine Manor sits in Peoria, Illinois and serves adults aged 55 and up, offering a mix of independent living, assisted living, respite, and memory care, so people can find what fits them even if their needs change. The building feels more like home than a hospital, with private studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments, most with kitchenettes and private bathrooms, and you'll find steam heat and air conditioning you can set yourself, plus cable units and large screen TVs, which means you'll stay comfortable and connected. Folks who live here get daily help if they want it, like assistance with meals, bathing, dressing, medication management, and cleaning, and staff are available any time, day or night.

Dining is easy, since meals come prepared by Barrack's Cater Inn or Barracks Hospitality Group, served in a community dining room with a friendly atmosphere, where people gather for breakfast or lunch, while a café nearby offers free coffee and pastries. The Manor includes an exercise room with a whirlpool, a beauty and barber shop, and an aviary for bird-watchers, plus a library and a grocery and gift shop, which add to daily life. The community stays busy with social activities, art classes like ceramics, and neighbors who check in with one another, and the schedule includes daily religious services in the St. Augustine Chapel, along with private events in the GG McGann Lounge, which can host large family gatherings and even offers a kitchen for special occasions.

Convenience is a focus here, with free storage space, scheduled rides to the doctor or stores, emergency help 24 hours a day, housekeeping, laundry, and wheelchair accessible showers, so you don't have to worry about basics. The grounds are kept neat and clean, and residents say the staff are friendly and kind, which matches the Manor's reputation for being well-kept and welcoming. Pets are part of life here, and there's parking for those who still drive. For people who need more help, like those living with dementia or Alzheimer's, the Manor provides memory care services, though those costs tend to run higher. Awards for best meals, dining, and friendliness speak to residents' daily experiences, making St Augustine Manor a solid option for older adults looking for safety, care, and social life in one place.
