    Friendly staff, clean facility, recommended

I love the friendly, attentive staff, clean odor-free facility, delicious food, abundant activities, and strong family-like community - residents genuinely seem happy. Management and new ownership have clearly improved dining, activities, and grounds, and the apartments are comfortable despite an older building. Downsides: occasional short-staffing, communication hiccups, memory-care inconsistency, and higher cost for some. Overall I'm pleased and would recommend it - my loved one is happy here.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: Reviews for Independence Village of Avon (Prestwick) are predominantly positive but show clear variability across units, shifts, and time periods. The strongest and most consistent themes are praise for staff compassion and relationship-building, robust activity programming, attractive outdoor spaces, and generally clean, spacious apartments. Many reviewers describe a warm, family-like atmosphere, strong engagement by activity staff, and kitchen teams that provide a wide variety of meals and special events. At the same time, a notable subset of reviews raises serious operational and care concerns, especially around memory care, staffing levels, management changes, and inconsistent service delivery.

Care quality and clinical services: Many reviewers specifically commend the nursing and wellness teams, and some families point to attentive nursing leadership and effective medication distribution. Physical and occupational therapy services on-site are highlighted positively. However, there is substantial variability in reported care quality: reviewers referenced CNA and nurse turnover, slow or inconsistent responses to call lights, and occasional coordination problems (medication records described as antiquated; miscommunications on care needs). A number of accounts raise more severe allegations — including reports of staff misconduct and time fraud — which some families connected to short staffing and morale issues. Memory care experiences are mixed: several reviews praise memory care staff and directors for compassion and good hands-on care, while others describe the memory care wing as smelling poorly, sparse or depressing in décor, under-supervised, and at risk for falls or resident isolation.

Staff, leadership, and culture: Staff friendliness and individualized attention are among the most frequently cited positives. Specific employees and leaders (Ruth, Sierra, Romeo and others) receive repeated praise for being accessible, helpful, and resident-focused. That said, reviews indicate a changing leadership picture over time: some families cited improvements after new executive leadership and activity program enhancements, while others described declines linked to management changes, including allegations of bullying by certain managers and shifts in culture that left residents and staff distressed. Several reviews note that experiences differ by shift — day staff often seen as hardworking and engaged, while some evening/weekend observations describe a more laid-back approach and slower follow-through.

Facilities and amenities: The community earns consistent commendation for its grounds — courtyard, walking path, and garden boxes — and for attractive, recently remodeled interior areas. Apartments are frequently described as spacious, allowing residents to bring their own furniture, and many units include full kitchens and large bedrooms. Multiple common rooms, private family dining, a large activity/craft room, and a well-equipped exercise/rehab gym are cited. Conversely, some parts of the building still feel dated (stained carpets, Formica counters) and several reviewers called out intermittent smells or cleanliness lapses on the memory care side. Maintenance responsiveness is generally praised for quick fixes, but some families reported inconsistent follow-up on outstanding issues.

Dining and activities: Dining is a major strength in the reviews. Many families compliment the kitchen staff, the variety of menu choices, made-to-order meals, and special event dining (holiday meals, outings). A few reviewers, however, described lapses in food quality or inconsistent meal experiences. Activity programming is another clear strong suit: reviewers highlight a wide range of daily and themed activities, outings, transportation to appointments, religious services, and a proactive, creative activities director. Some comments suggest activities skew toward residents with lower functional levels or that staffing limits the number of residents who can be taken on outings.

Operational, billing, and logistics concerns: Multiple reviewers mention problems with coordination and communication (scheduling, follow-up phone calls, incomplete information during admissions). Laundry errors, lost or damaged clothing, and occasional housekeeping inconsistencies appear in several accounts. A few reviewers noted extra charges for assistance or billing disputes; others reported prompt and helpful billing resolution. Cost is mentioned as reasonable by some and as high by others (one reviewer noted about $3,000/month), reflecting variability in perceived value depending on individual care needs and expectations.

Notable patterns and overall recommendation: The dominant pattern is a community that, for many residents, offers compassionate staff, active programming, clean living spaces, good meals, and a welcoming community feel. Many families explicitly recommend the community and cite substantial improvements after management changes. However, the reviews also reveal significant inconsistency: memory care quality and environment are described both very positively and negatively; staffing levels, turnover, and morale are recurrent concerns that directly affect response times and supervision; and administrative or leadership transitions have sometimes led to declines in family trust. Prospective families should weigh the strong social and amenity offerings and the many testimonials to excellent individualized staff attention against the reported variability in clinical consistency and management stability. A thorough in-person tour, detailed discussions about staff-to-resident ratios, care protocols (especially for memory care), and clarity on billing/extra charges are recommended to align expectations with the current state of the community.
