    Lovely facility, caring staff, understaffed

I placed a loved one here and have mixed feelings. The house is gorgeous and home-like with fresh meals, activities, a family-style memory care model and some exceptional caregivers (Ashlee, Ashley) who truly care, but it's clearly short-staffed - many staff seemed indifferent, residents were sometimes left unattended or in soiled bedding, and I observed no night checks or a nurse on shift. With constant advocacy it's an otherwise pleasant, well-kept home; without that vigilance I'd be concerned.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews is mixed but clustered around two clear themes. Many reviewers praise Story Cottage Living for its environment, personalized memory care approach, and several standout caregivers; other reviewers raise serious operational and care-quality concerns, including staffing shortfalls and hygiene and safety lapses. The positive impressions emphasize the facility's strengths as a warm, homelike setting with a specialized dementia model, while the negatives point to inconsistent execution and reliability that can materially affect resident wellbeing.

Facilities and atmosphere are consistently cited as a major strength. Multiple reviewers describe the building as beautiful, elegant, and home-like with pleasant scenery and a cozy, family-oriented design. The family-style living and familiar home layout are repeatedly mentioned as beneficial for residents with memory needs, and reviewers highlight that this setting supports strong relationships between staff, residents, and families. Cleanliness and an orderly environment are also noted by several reviewers who call the home neat and well maintained.

Memory care and programming are viewed positively by many. The specialized memory care approach, described as unique or innovative by reviewers, appears to be a core selling point. Reviewers cite low resident-to-caregiver ratios, personalized attention, enrichment activities, and fresh meals as concrete elements that contribute to a supportive daily life for residents. Some families report smooth transitions to higher levels of care and credit staff for exceptional, highly attentive caregiving. Several specific staff members (notably Ashlee and Ashley) are named and praised for their compassion and competence.

However, there are significant and recurring operational concerns that temper the overall praise. Multiple reviewers report short-staffing, which they link to failures in basic care and supervision. Specific allegations include residents being soaked in urine, lack of regular night checks, and situations where no nurse was on shift to handle emergencies. These reports suggest variability in care quality across shifts and possibly across different resident cohorts. Several reviewers explicitly state that families must actively advocate for their loved ones to receive appropriate attention, and at least one account described end-of-life care as rough.

Trust and management perceptions are mixed and at times polarized. While many reviews call staff sincere, caring, and trustworthy, other reviews accuse staff or the company of being disingenuous, deceitful, or untrustworthy. This dichotomy points to inconsistency in staff behavior or communication, which may reflect turnover, uneven training, or differences between leadership messaging and on-the-floor practice. The divergence between very positive first-hand caregiver reports and alarming neglect accounts makes it especially important for prospective families to probe operational details.

In summary, Story Cottage Living shows clear strengths: a warm, attractive home environment, a focused memory-care model, strong relationships fostered by many caregivers, quality meals and activities, and positive experiences reported by several families. At the same time, there are repeated, serious concerns about staffing levels, inconsistent care (including hygiene and night supervision), limited nurse coverage on some shifts, and the need for family advocacy to ensure adequate care. These patterns indicate that while many residents thrive there, others may experience lapses that can have meaningful consequences.

For prospective families, the reviews suggest a careful, specific tour and line of questioning: confirm current staffing ratios and turnover, ask about nurse coverage and emergency protocols for all shifts, request examples of how night checks and incontinence care are handled, inquire about training and supervision for dementia care, and seek references from current families. Monitoring and clear communication with the home may be necessary to ensure a consistently positive experience given the reported variability.

    About Story Cottage Living

Story Cottage Living sits in a peaceful, suburban neighborhood in Carmel, Indiana, and you'll find it carries a quiet, home-like feeling that keeps things calm and comfortable for people living with dementia or Alzheimer's disease. The homes remain small, holding only about eight to ten residents each, which makes it easier for staff to give more personal attention-there's always one caregiver for every four residents. That sort of close ratio helps make sure nobody ever feels forgotten, and the Senior Home Companions staff take pride in showing respect, using gentle methods and focusing on keeping everything safe, especially when helping with things like bathing, oral care, or getting dressed.

You'll notice the quiet setting means less bustle than a bigger facility, and the rooms, sunroom, and library let people gather for meals, activities, or just to enjoy a sunny afternoon. The interiors have hardwood floors, wide windows, and decor meant to remind folks of home, while personal safety gets attention too, with passcodes on doors and monitoring systems that track night-time movements in a discreet way.

There's no loud marketing here, but the monthly cost does fall on the higher side, which reflects the upscale touches and personalized care. The homes sit close to shops, parks, doctors, restaurants, and places of worship, so families know nothing feels isolated. People living here join activities to stay social and engaged, and staff-always trained to support dementia and memory loss-find ways to include everyone.

There's a focus on making every day feel calm and secure, from special bathing techniques to simple tools for decision-making in the room, and families who want to know more can use their online resources like a video library, decision toolkit, and even take a virtual tour. Story Cottage Living connects with other locations too, like Williams Creek, Carey Grove, West Clay, and Meridian Hills, so the same approach runs through several neighborhoods in Indianapolis and Carmel, keeping the homes small, safe, and dedicated to memory care above all else.
