    Spotless community with caring staff

I placed my loved one here and have been consistently impressed by how spotless and well-kept the small, one-level community is and how caring and attentive the nursing and CNA staff are. Residents stay active with lots of thoughtful activities, dining is generally good, and maintenance/housekeeping respond quickly. The combined assisted living/memory care layout made transitions easy, but communication and front-desk/management consistency can be spotty at times. Overall I feel my loved one is safe, comfortable, and well cared for - I would recommend it.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly positive, with repeated emphasis on cleanliness, compassionate caregiving, and a homelike, memory-care–focused environment. The most common strengths cited are the facility's meticulous housekeeping ("very clean," "no odors"), the caring nature of CNAs, nurses, and support staff, and leadership that is visible and responsive. Multiple reviewers highlighted the Executive Director and nursing leadership as engaged, approachable, and willing to personally assist. Families frequently reported clear, timely communication, frequent updates (including photos and phone/email contact), and staff who take time to explain care and involve family in planning.

Care quality is a dominant positive theme. Many families described individualized attention, good patient/staff ratios, vigilant nursing care, and successful clinical outcomes (for example, recovery-oriented care and hospice integration improving quality of life). Reviewers repeatedly praised staff for going "above and beyond," learning residents' preferences, preparing extra favorite foods, and providing personalized touches like birthday recognition. The community's memory-care expertise and dementia-friendly decorations and programming were highlighted as important assets; reviewers noted engaging activities (movie nights, games, social programming) and residents who are active and participating.

Facility and campus attributes are frequently praised: reviewers described a newer, well-maintained building with a safe, locked one-level layout, furnished units, a pleasant central courtyard, and easy navigation. Maintenance responsiveness and housekeeping were repeatedly commended. Several reviewers noted the facility felt like a "home away from home" with a warm atmosphere, good communal spaces (dining and activity rooms), and generally good food quality. Inclusive pricing and reasonable fees were mentioned positively by multiple families, as was the availability of hospice services and coordinated care with outside clinicians.

That said, there are clear areas of concern and variability noted by a notable minority of reviewers. The common criticisms center on inconsistent staff engagement and management issues: some families reported CNAs talking or using phones, limited staff presence during certain shifts, and staff turnover that affected continuity of care. A few reviews described poor communication or administrative problems during transitions (for example, transfers without clear paperwork or a damages list and an unexplained withheld deposit). Financial clarity and billing were called out as confusing in a few instances (staged pricing related to health status, deposits, and what fees are inclusive). There are also scattered complaints about limited activity variety or smaller dining spaces compared with larger communities, and a few reports of restricted outdoor access or courtyard upkeep.

Food and activities received mixed feedback: while many reviewers praised the dining (some called it above-average, with special meal days and accommodating staff), others said the food was "terrible" or the dining choices too limited. Activities likewise were described as well-coordinated and enjoyable by many families, but some reviewers wished for more variety and higher frequency of offerings. Administrative and front-desk responsiveness appears inconsistent—most reviewers praised rapid and empathetic responses, but a minority reported front desk problems, early shift endings, and unhelpful or unwelcoming initial interactions.

In summary, the dominant pattern is very positive: AVIVA Merrillville is repeatedly described as a clean, safe, memory-care–focused community with compassionate staff and engaged leadership that yields good clinical and quality-of-life outcomes for residents. However, prospective families should be aware of variability in staff consistency and some administrative/communication issues reported by a minority of reviewers. If considering AVIVA Merrillville, it would be prudent to (1) ask specific questions about staffing patterns and recent turnover, (2) verify billing/fee structures and deposit policies in writing, (3) tour during multiple times of day to gauge staff presence and activity offerings, and (4) discuss how transfers and documentation are handled to ensure clear expectations. Overall recommendation trends are positive, but attention to the few recurring concerns can help families make an informed decision and set appropriate expectations.
