    Chaotic management endangers residents' care

I loved the clean, homey feel, friendly aides, good meals and activities, but my experience at Hickory Creek was a nightmare. Daily problems - disorganized management, short-staffed teams, therapy unavailable for days, medication/ seizure care concerns and staff ignoring residents - left my loved one at risk. A head nurse's cold "rabbit hole" remark crushed us when we needed compassion. Despite some wonderful staff, the ongoing chaos is intolerable. Do not, under any circumstances, place a loved one here.

    Summary review

Overall impression: Reviews for Hickory Creek At New Castle are mixed but lean strongly positive on interpersonal care and facility atmosphere, with recurring praise for the staff, cleanliness, meals, activities, and a family-like environment. Many reviewers emphasize that residents are treated as family, staff know residents’ names, and that care teams (including aides and nurses) are compassionate and attentive. Multiple reviewers explicitly recommend the facility and call it one of the best nursing-home options in New Castle. Cleanliness and a pleasant smell are repeatedly noted, as are the bright, homey common areas and features such as outdoor porches and even exotic birds that visitors and residents enjoy.

Care quality and staff: The dominant theme across the majority of reviews is positive feelings about the staff — described as kind, courteous, hardworking, dedicated, and compassionate. Reviewers often mention quick responses to needs and emotional support during difficult times (for example, support during a parent’s last days). Many accounts highlight a family-like atmosphere and warm interactions between staff and residents. At the same time, several reviews raise concerns about staffing levels, with comments that the facility appears short-staffed or that employees are overworked. A smaller number of reviewers reported actual lapses in care or coordination problems, saying staff ignored residents or that care could have been better in specific cases. There are also an isolated but important complaints that certain nursing leadership interactions lacked empathy, which negatively affected a family’s experience.

Facilities and rooms: Reviewers consistently describe the facility as clean, bright, and homey, welcoming to visitors and pleasant to walk through. Positive mentions include a lack of foul odors, easy walk-in tours, and nice outdoor porches. However, there are practical facility-related drawbacks: rooms are described as small and some do not have in-room bathrooms, which may affect resident comfort and privacy. The dining area is frequently described as loud and sometimes crowded, which may be stressful for some residents.

Dining and nutrition: Most reviewers praise the meals as good and nutritious, and several explicitly note great or healthy meals. There are specific positive mentions of generally pleasant food experiences. Concerns include the appearance of pureed diets — some reviewers said pureed food looked unappealing — and a few isolated comments implying inconsistency (good food “most days”). Cost is also a related concern: some reviewers said the facility feels expensive for those on a fixed income.

Activities and social life: The facility appears to offer a robust activities program from the reviewers’ perspective. Frequent mentions include bingo, piano/music, board games, and organized trips and outings that include family participation. These offerings contribute to an uplifting atmosphere and the impression that residents have opportunities for engagement, which many families appreciated.

Clinical services and therapy: While many reviews praise the caregiving staff, there are notable concerns about therapy and clinical service consistency. One reviewer reported no physical therapy sessions for four days, raising questions about rehabilitation follow-through. Another mentioned ongoing seizure medication management as a concern, suggesting at least one family felt clinical monitoring or communication around complex medical needs could be improved. These are fewer in number than the positive care reports but important because they concern medical and rehabilitative outcomes.

Management and organization: Management impressions are mixed. Several reviewers singled out helpful directors and management staff, praising their responsiveness. Others described disorganization, coordination problems, or inconsistent leadership behavior (including an allegation that a head nurse’s handling of a family situation caused hurt feelings). The aggregated picture is of generally supportive administration but with occasional lapses or uneven experiences depending on specific staff or shifts.

Major patterns and risks to note: The overarching pattern is positive sentiment about day-to-day life, staff compassion, and cleanliness, balanced against recurring operational issues: short staffing/overwork, occasional disorganization, and specific concerns about therapy continuity and certain management interactions. There is one particularly emotionally charged review describing ongoing, daily problems and a strong warning not to place loved ones there. That review stands out as an extreme negative outlier among many positive comments; however, it is a serious red flag that warrants further investigation by prospective families — for example, by asking management for staffing ratios, incident logs, therapy schedules, and references from current families.

Bottom line: Hickory Creek At New Castle is frequently described as a clean, welcoming facility with caring staff, good meals, varied activities, and a family-like atmosphere — strengths that lead many reviewers to highly recommend it. Prospective residents and families should balance these positive themes with documented concerns: evaluate room size/bathroom availability, probe dining noise and pureed meal presentation, confirm therapy schedules and clinical medication oversight, and ask management about staffing levels and how complaints are handled to ensure the facility’s operational practices match the generally favorable personal impressions many reviewers report.
