    Caring staff, activities; cleanliness concerns

I found the staff exceptionally caring and friendly - Amanda Marquis and her team kept residents safe during COVID and created a warm, home-like historic community with many activities, salon access, weekly outings, in-house housekeeping/laundry and real independence for residents. My tradeoffs: rooms are quite small and food/cleanliness can be inconsistent (some reports of maintenance/bedbug issues), so weigh those concerns before deciding.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is mixed but leans positive regarding staff, community atmosphere, and activities, while showing consistent concerns around room size, food quality, and cleanliness/maintenance in some reports.

Care quality and staff: The most consistent positive theme is the staff. Multiple reviews describe the caregivers, nurses and management as caring, attentive, and treating residents like family. Amanda Marquis — repeatedly named in reviews — is highlighted as a strong, visible leader whose team has been instrumental in day-to-day success and emergency response. Reviewers credit staff for compassionate, dignified ADL assistance, strong emergency responsiveness (including during COVID-19), and creating peace of mind for family caregivers. That said, there are a small number of serious negative allegations (including claims of poor care, dishonesty, and a dementia patient being distressed when compensation was refused). Also, one or two comments note variability in worker quality, suggesting staffing consistency may fluctuate.

Facilities and building: The Leland Legacy is repeatedly praised for its beautiful, historic building and appealing communal spaces — many reviewers call it a community gem and a valuable asset to the local area. The facility is described as home-like and welcoming, with nice lobby furniture and areas for community events. However, a recurring negative is room size: several reviewers say rooms are small or extremely small, and at least one notes rooms used to be larger in the past. Cleanliness and maintenance show a split pattern: some reviewers report a spotless, well-kept facility, while others report dirty conditions, lack of maintenance, and even bedbugs. These conflicting reports suggest there may be variability over time, between units, or related to staffing/management changes; the bedbug and “unfit for assisted living” claims are especially serious and should be investigated by prospective residents and families.

Dining: Dining impressions are mixed. Multiple reviewers describe meals as “okay” or “so-so,” and several recommend that the facility is not a five-star resort in culinary terms. Conversely, other reviewers praise certain meals — especially lunch — noting good portions, specific positive items (bread and cinnamon-roll style desserts), and an overall pleasant dining experience for some residents. This variability suggests that food quality may fluctuate by meal, day, or diner preference.

Activities and services: Reviews consistently note an active calendar and good programming: diverse activities, weekly shopping trips, weekly outings, and social opportunities. On-site services like a salon/spa, planned therapy space, in-house housekeeping and laundry, and financial support options (rep payee and personal banking) are all cited as strengths that support independent living and convenience for residents and families.

Management, community standing, and COVID response: Management under Amanda’s leadership receives strong praise for positive engagement, effective oversight, and community impact. Several reviews characterize the facility as a vital part of Wayne County and Richmond, IN. The facility’s COVID-19 response is frequently commended with mentions of zero cases and staff working “top notch” to keep residents safe. At the same time, some reviewers criticize ownership or higher-level management as being less caring or disengaged, indicating there may be tension between on-the-ground staff/management and the owner.

Patterns, risks, and recommendations for prospective families: The dominant positive themes are compassionate staff, a warm community atmosphere, attractive historic facilities, and active programming — all factors that make the Leland Legacy appealing to many residents and families. Dominant negatives are small living spaces, inconsistent dining, and alarming but less-common reports about cleanliness/pest issues and allegations of poor or dishonest care. Importantly, there is notable inconsistency across reviews (some say spotless, others say dirty), which could indicate variability over time, across units, or with different shifts of staff.

Given the mixed but detailed feedback, prospective residents or family members should prioritize an in-person visit to inspect room size and condition, ask management about pest control and recent maintenance records, sample the dining program, request references from current residents/families, and discuss any serious past complaints and how they were resolved. Overall, many reviewers recommend Leland Legacy for its staff, community feel, and services, but the facility may not meet expectations for those seeking larger apartments, consistently high-end dining, or assurance that past cleanliness/pest concerns have been fully resolved.
