    Clean compassionate staff, occasional issues

I placed a family member here and I'm impressed - the building is spotless, home-like, and residents genuinely seem happy. The Executive Director, Office Manager and most staff are compassionate, attentive, and often go above and beyond; the activities and rehab/long-term care options are excellent. A few times I've seen signs of understaffing, poor communication or rude behavior and occasional cold meals, so it's not perfect. Overall I highly recommend this facility for long-term care, rehab, or respite.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews for Hickory Creek at Rochester is strongly positive, with repeated praise for the facility’s cleanliness, warm atmosphere, and the caring nature of many staff members. Multiple reviewers emphasize that the building is very clean and well-maintained, with no offensive odors and an environment that feels home-like. The Executive Director and the Business/Office Manager receive specific commendations for being caring, professional, and effective, and several reviewers call the facility one of the best in the area. Long-tenured staff and smiling residents are mentioned repeatedly, which supports an impression of stability and resident satisfaction.

Staff quality and culture are central strengths. Many reviews describe staff as friendly, welcoming, and willing to advocate for residents and families. Caregivers are frequently characterized as compassionate and attentive; some reviewers explicitly say staff go above and beyond and create a family-like environment where residents feel valued. The facility is also noted as a good place to work, which may contribute to the positive interactions families and residents report. The combination of engaged leadership, dedicated front-line staff, and a supportive atmosphere is cited as a principal reason many reviewers highly recommend Hickory Creek for long-term care, rehabilitation, or respite stays.

Activities and community engagement are another consistent positive theme. Reviewers mention an active social calendar, specific activities such as balloon tennis, and fundraising efforts that directly benefit residents. These elements appear to contribute to a strong sense of community and neighborliness among residents and families, reinforcing the facility’s home-like character and promoting resident engagement and well-being.

Despite the many positives, there are notable and recurring concerns that temper the otherwise favorable picture. Understaffing and the sense that some staff are overworked are cited by multiple reviewers; this appears linked to inconsistent experiences with caregiving and communication. A subset of reviews reports rude or abusive behavior from certain employees, suggestions being met with eye rolls, and at least one instance of a caller being hung up on. These negative reports are relatively few compared with the positive comments, but they are significant because they relate to resident dignity and family trust.

Dining feedback is mixed and another area of concern. Several reviewers praise well-balanced meals and good food, yet an equal number describe meals as terrible, cold, or unappetizing. The divergence suggests inconsistency in meal service or variability in expectations and experiences across shifts or days. Given that nutrition and meal enjoyment are important to resident quality of life, this is an area families may want to probe when considering the facility.

In summary, Hickory Creek at Rochester is portrayed predominantly as a clean, welcoming, and well-led facility with many compassionate, long-tenured staff and a strong activity program that fosters community. These strengths generate high levels of recommendation for long-term care, rehab, and respite stays. However, the facility also shows patterns of staffing strain and inconsistent service in a few key areas—particularly communication, occasional negative staff attitudes, and meal quality—that have led to some negative experiences. Prospective residents and families should weigh the strong overall reputation and cleanliness against the reported variability in staff behavior and dining, and might consider asking direct questions about current staffing levels, communication protocols, and meal service practices during a tour or intake conversation.

    About Hickory Creek at Rochester

Hickory Creek at Rochester sits in Rochester, Indiana, and has been serving local families since 1969; the place runs 24 hours a day, so staff are always around to help, and everyone there-from the doctors and nurses down to the social workers-really tries hard to make the community feel safe and comfortable, especially for people who need help with everyday tasks or deals with serious illness, and you'll notice the building is wheelchair accessible, tidy, and well kept, with working air conditioning and plenty of parking. There's a secure, home-like feel throughout, and restrooms are always close by and clean, which helps people get around a little easier. The care covers a wide range, including skilled nursing, memory care in dedicated Memory Care Apartments, and assisted living apartments that fit what each person might need, plus short-term rehab in the Road to Recovery program, where the care team makes a plan to help people recover from hospital stays. Life there isn't only about health care; you'll see residents gathering for balloon tennis or other social activities, which helps build friendships and makes the days a little brighter. The staff knows what they're doing, and many live out a calling to serve and stay with folks like part of the family, especially for people in hospice or those who need palliative care, with a focus on comfort and relieving pain at the end of life. Everyday health is important too, so you'll see programs for movement and exercise-including holistic wellness and aerobic conditioning-to keep people active. Therapy happens on site for both residents and folks coming in for outpatient care, and there are special programs for wound care, fall prevention, and helping people manage wheelchairs or learn to walk again. Respite care gives family caregivers a break for a short time, and long-term care helps those who aren't able to manage on their own anymore. Hickory Creek at Rochester takes many payment forms and accepts Medicaid if you qualify, and they work to make sure each resident feels valued. Everything operates in a way that keeps the place clean and welcoming, and the goal is for everyone to feel included and safe, with support from a whole team that's come to know the people they serve.
