    Warm staff, pleasant facility, caveats

I toured and placed a loved one here and overall I'm pleased - the staff are warm and caring, the facility is clean and homey, the dining room (fireplace, wall of windows) and wooded grounds with deer are lovely, and activities keep residents engaged. Rooms are comfortable with studio/1-bed options, care is generally attentive, and the food is often good. Be aware of recurring issues: occasional understaffing, spotty communication, slow maintenance, pricing/fee concerns, and limited memory-care options/second-floor access. I would recommend this community with those caveats.

    About Grand Emerald Place

Grand Emerald Place sits in South Bend, Indiana, and provides many services for older adults looking for an affordable place to live where help's close by, so folks who need support with bathing, dressing, or managing medicine get assistance from a care team on duty all day and night, with registered nurses taking care of clinical oversight and planning. The community offers different living options, including independent living, assisted living, and memory care for people with Alzheimer's or dementia, while also having skilled nursing, short-term respite care, at-home care, and hospice support as needs change. Residents can choose from several apartment floor plans, with safety features like emergency call systems, smoke detectors, well-lit entryways, walk-in fiberglass showers, and individual mailboxes, and amenities such as kitchenettes with microwaves and refrigerators, heating and cooling, window treatments, and even built-in bookshelves, which make things easier and safer. The staff goes through ongoing training to handle residents' varying needs, and the community aims to create a home-like space where people stay as healthy and happy as possible, with housekeeping, laundry, and medication management handled by dedicated workers.

Grand Emerald Place keeps folks busy with a structured program of social, educational, spiritual, and recreational activities, including arts and crafts, bingo, movie nights, group exercise like tai chi, social gatherings, walking clubs, gardening, and outdoor teas, thanks to an activity director putting together something for most interests. There're both indoor and outdoor spaces like lounges with fireplaces, patios, a rooftop atrium, fitness center, meeting rooms, library, game room, TV lounge, café/bistro, barber shop, beauty salon, and even a chaplain who visits the community's house of worship, so residents can find their own space to relax or be with others, plus there's free high-speed Wi-Fi and a computer room for anyone wanting to stay connected or go online. Dining options run from restaurant-style eating to private and anytime dining, room service, and guest meals, with the chef providing menu choices for people needing diets lower in sugar or salt, making meals more welcoming for those with dietary concerns.

The facility holds a 3.6 rating from 25 reviews, and it's designed to help people age in place, meaning residents can stay in their own apartments while care needs change, and short-term stays are also available for those needing a break, like families or caregivers. All common areas and key features are wheelchair accessible, and the building includes indoor mailboxes, carpeting, and generous closet and storage space, with weekly housekeeping and laundry, complimentary parking, and scheduled transportation for outings or errands. The staff runs safety drills and keeps sprinklers working to lower risks, and there's always someone on duty to help with emergencies. Grand Emerald Place belongs to the Enlivant community and provides extra support to residents, offering services and resources for senior care planning, and a life that's as comfortable, safe, and engaged as possible for people looking for active retirement, specialized memory care, or just a place where someone's there if a little help is needed.

    About Enlivant

Enlivant, founded in 1981 and formerly headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, was a pioneering senior living provider that operated over 200 communities across the United States before transitioning management to new operators in September 2023. Previously known as Assisted Living Concepts, the company rebranded as Enlivant as part of a strategic repositioning that included relocating its headquarters from Wisconsin to Chicago. Under the decade-long leadership of CEO Dan Guill, Enlivant served thousands of seniors with a team of more than 7,000 dedicated caregivers. The company offered a comprehensive range of senior care services including assisted living, independent living, memory care, and short-term stays. Enlivant's pioneering approach centered on creating supportive, stimulating environments where residents could thrive in mind, body, and soul. Their unique Resident Care Partner program paired each resident with a dedicated caregiver to ensure personalized attention and continuity of care. This person-centered philosophy emphasized building meaningful relationships and fostering vibrant communities where seniors could maintain their independence while receiving necessary support. Enlivant achieved significant industry recognition, becoming the first senior living provider to earn the WELL Health-Safety Rating for its entire portfolio of 215 communities in January 2022. This evidence-based, third-party verified certification validated their comprehensive health and safety protocols, including enhanced cleaning procedures, robust emergency preparedness programs, and successful vaccination initiatives that achieved nearly 95% vaccination rates among employees and residents. The company was also certified as a Great Place to Work for four consecutive years by the Great Place to Work Institute, reflecting their strong culture of respect, camaraderie, and meaningful work. Despite these achievements, including 92 communities being recognized by U.S. News & World Report as 2023-2024 Best Senior Living communities, Enlivant faced insurmountable financial challenges following the COVID-19 pandemic. Citing operational difficulties, occupancy challenges, rising interest rates, and debt service costs, the company ceased operations at the end of 2023. While Enlivant's legacy includes pioneering approaches to senior care and industry-leading safety standards, its communities now operate under new management, continuing to serve seniors across the nation.
