    Warm, attentive staff; verify staffing

I placed my mom here and she truly calls it home. The staff are loving, attentive and professional - resident-centered care, engaging activities, good food, clean rooms and a beautiful, safe campus; they go above and beyond and the place has strong ratings and zero state deficiencies. That said, COVID strained them and I've seen reports of slow communication, staffing shortages and troubling claims of discrimination, so visit in person and ask directly about staffing and past complaints.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The reviews for Evergreen Community are predominantly positive, emphasizing compassionate, resident-centered care, a clean and welcoming physical environment, varied and engaging activities, and strong family reassurance. Many reviewers highlight that staff go above and beyond, describing nurses, aides, dining staff, life coaches and administrators as caring, attentive, and proactive. Objective markers of quality are also noted: a CMS five-star rating and zero deficiencies on a state survey were mentioned, reinforcing a broadly favorable external reputation.

Care quality and staffing: Multiple reviewers praise the quality of hands-on care, including personalized care plans, responsive nursing and dietary teams, and strong hospice and end-of-life support. Non-pharmacological approaches to behavior management (relaxing music, walks, adjusted sleep schedules) and wheelchair-assisted exercise are consistently mentioned as evidence of thoughtful, person-centered programming. However, this positive picture is complicated by several serious negative reports: a few families described neglect (including a stage 4 bedsore and missed doctor appointments), poor training, and management failures. There is disagreement among reviewers about staff stability — some cite low turnover and consistent staffing, while others report high turnover, short-staffing, and unsafe conditions. This variability suggests that experiences may depend on unit, timing, or individual staff on duty.

Staff culture and interactions: Across many summaries, staff are described as kind, compassionate, and family-like; residents reportedly feel treated with dignity, respect, and choice. Staff-led activities and personalized celebrations reinforce a sense that residents’ preferences are prioritized. Conversely, several reviews raise very serious concerns about racism and discriminatory treatment of Black staff and, allegedly, an environment that could discourage African American residents. Additional complaints include misleading hiring practices, poor communication from management, and occasional rudeness or disorganization. These issues point to potential cultural and managerial inconsistencies that can materially affect resident and staff experience.

Facilities and amenities: The physical environment receives strong praise: clean rooms and halls, colorful decor, no offensive odors, and an attractive secured outdoor courtyard with herb gardens and a gazebo. Reviewers also mention a warm, welcoming ambiance — some even describe a "college dorm vibe" for social energy — and a variety of creative activities (ice cream truck events, themed dances, bingo, Festival of Baskets). Meal quality is frequently commended, with nutritionist support and family members noting residents enjoy the food. The facility’s safe, secure outdoor space and supervised outings are highlighted as important quality-of-life features.

Activities, social life and volunteer involvement: Evergreen is repeatedly credited with a robust activity program that supports socialization and mental engagement. Life coaches, daily games, themed events, and creative programs are common positives; volunteers also play an active role and are frequently celebrated for adding joy and companionship. These offerings are a consistent strength and a clear reason families feel their loved ones are thriving socially.

Management, communication and service consistency: Many reviews praise smooth transitions, quick issue resolution, and proactive staff presence. Yet several recurring complaints center on slow service, long wait times, unreturned calls, and inconsistent follow-through by administration. Some reviewers describe misleading job postings and lack of transparency in hiring or scheduling, suggesting operational communication problems that could impact both staff morale and resident care continuity.

Safety, equity and risk patterns: While many families explicitly state they feel safe and reassured, a subset of reviews cite troubling safety and equity concerns — including allegations of neglect and racial discrimination. These reports are serious and warrant attention: they indicate that despite strong overall ratings and many positive family experiences, there may be isolated but significant lapses in care or workplace culture. Prospective residents and families should consider asking direct questions about staffing ratios, staff training, diversity and inclusion policies, recent incident reporting, and how the facility addresses complaints.

Bottom line and recommendations: Evergreen Community shows many hallmarks of a high-quality, resident-focused long-term care setting — cleanliness, compassionate staff, meaningful activities, good dining, hospice support, and favorable external ratings. At the same time, reviews reveal a non-trivial minority of serious concerns around staffing consistency, management communication, alleged neglect, and racism. These mixed signals suggest that while many residents and families have excellent experiences, outcomes may depend on timing, unit, or specific staff. Prospective families should visit in person, request recent state inspection reports and staffing metrics, ask for references from current residents or families, and probe how the facility handles complaints, staff training, and diversity issues before making a placement decision.
