    Caring staff, inconsistent communication, food

I live at what I'd call the top residential care facility in Protection, Kansas - the staff are caring, efficient, and loving, and our social worker is wonderful; residents are happy. The team clearly tries hard, though communication can be weak and the food quality is inconsistent.

    About Protection Valley Manor

Protection Valley Manor sits at 600 South Broadway in Protection, Kansas, where folks can find a calm, homelike setting and get different levels of care including independent living, assisted living, and nursing home care, and with 42 certified beds and about 38 residents, everyone tends to know each other, and things stay pretty comfortable and familiar, and after a big building update in 2007 the place now has room for around 45 people, with special licenses for both mental health and geriatric care, so there's beds set aside for both those groups, and families often feel relief knowing the building's fully sprinklered for safety and the staff keep an eye on residents 24 hours a day, especially those who might wander or need memory care. Amenities can include a book room for quiet reading, a wellness area, a spa, sauna, garden spots, a recreation room, and the convenience of a mobile barber or parlor, and they make sure to have social events like bingo, birthday parties, music, and art activities, with exercise routines, movie nights, and chances to go outside, spend time with animals, or just chat with others. Regular programs include planned fitness schedules, transportation for important appointments like doctor visits or shopping, and trips for spiritual needs like church or Bible study, and they serve three home-cooked meals a day, which they'll adjust if someone has a special medical need, and those meals are a big time for everyone to catch up and socialize in the newly expanded dining room. Staff can give insulin shots, handle two-person bed transfers, and help people with things like dressing, bathing, grooming, and getting in and out of showers, and the nurses include RNs, LPNs, and CNAs-like Kassadee Harris, the Certified Nursing Assistant, Paula Bradley, the Dietary Supervisor, and Amy Baker, the Office Manager-so folks with health concerns like pain, depression, anxiety, or infections get attention, and they work with people who need help with toileting, mobility, or have pressure sore concerns. The facility takes Medicaid and runs as a non-profit, and families can join the resident and family councils to help with decisions; they even welcome donations which are tax deductible, and the place tries to keep communication open and answer questions for anyone interested in learning more or getting involved. Their programs feature special outings for breakfast or exercise, housekeeping help, laundry service, respite care, restorative services, general counseling, intergenerational programs, and different kinds of support groups, and there's a focus on keeping a safe, secure place where people feel respected for who they are, with a mission to nurture the human spirit and celebrate every person's uniqueness. Protection Valley Manor has a long-standing tie to healthcare in the area, isn't part of a bigger chain, ranks as a non-profit, and keeps things personal and neighborly, with plenty of activities for the mind and body, and some unique touches that aim to keep each day as comfortable and full as possible for everyone living there.
