    Homey staff, outbreak and lapses

I'm grateful my mom found a clean, homey place with genuinely caring, engaging staff, great activities, welcoming common areas and good meals - she adjusted and felt at home. That said, we experienced a serious COVID-safety lapse that led to an outbreak in A wing and the death of a family member, and I saw ongoing staffing turnover, occasional inattentive care, strong odors in a wing, inconsistent doctor visits, and high upfront/ongoing costs. Staff usually responded helpfully and the community can offer real peace of mind, but ask pointed questions about staffing, infection protocols, billing, and memory-care training before committing.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: Reviews of Brookdale Shawnee are predominantly positive, particularly from families seeking specialized memory-care services. Many reviewers emphasize that the facility is designed specifically for Alzheimer’s/dementia care, noting strong security features to prevent wandering, a three-neighborhood layout that creates smaller community feels, and fenced outdoor garden areas that provide safe access to the outdoors. The facility is repeatedly described as welcoming and home-like, with bright, spacious apartment-style rooms where residents are encouraged to bring their own furniture and decor. A large portion of reviewers express gratitude for attentive caregiving staff, personalized care plans, and a robust activities program — all of which contribute to families feeling relieved and confident in their loved ones’ care.

Care quality and staff: The most consistent praise centers on the direct caregiving team: reviewers use terms like caring, kind, gentle, patient, and compassionate. Many highlight 24/7 nursing coverage, regular MD/NP rounds, hospice/comfort-care capabilities, and monthly on-site dental hygienist visits as indicators of strong clinical support. Several reviews describe staff who go “above and beyond,” treat residents like family, and provide excellent end-of-life care. The activities director and sales leader (several reviewers name Allison) are singled out as invested and professional. However, a notable counterpoint is recurring concern about staff turnover and inconsistent care depending on which nurse or aide is on duty. Some families report delayed responses, missed care tasks when particular staff are on shift, and general staffing shortages that can affect reliability. There are also isolated but serious allegations of dishonest nursing practices and billing concerns that warrant attention.

Facilities and cleanliness: Multiple reviewers praise the physical environment: the layout, common areas with life-skill stations, garden spaces, and overall cleanliness are frequently lauded. The community feels secure, hotel-like, and well-maintained to many visitors and families. That said, several specific complaints reoccur: urine or strong odors in certain hallways or wings, and occasional reports of dirty bathrooms or floors and room cleanliness needing improvement. These issues appear localized rather than universal but are important given Brookdale Shawnee’s focus on memory-care residents who are vulnerable to hygiene-related problems.

Activities, programming, and services: Programming is a major strength. Reviewers mention a full schedule of daily activities, arts and crafts, music and entertainment, visiting musicians and singers, church services, outings (apple orchards, country drives, fishing, restaurants, school visits), and one-on-one engagements. Specialized memory-care activities and therapies, community event nights, and a strong music program are repeatedly praised for improving residents’ moods and engagement. On-site practical services such as a hairdresser and monthly dental visits are viewed positively. A few reviewers mention that activities sometimes skew toward female interests and would like more variety for men, but overall the programming is cited as lively and consistent.

Dining: Opinions on dining are mixed. Many reviews call the meals delicious, with snacks available and a pleasant central dining experience. Others report dissatisfaction, ranging from “meals okay” to “horrible food,” with some staff unable to explain menu choices. Overall, dining appears acceptable to good for many residents, but food quality is an area with disparate experiences and would benefit from consistency.

Management, communication, and administration: Communication receives mixed reviews. Several families praise excellent, up-to-date communication from the director and activities coordinator and report that staff are willing to listen and problem-solve. By contrast, other reviews criticize management for being unresponsive, rude, or incompetent, with complaints about lack of follow-up, no callbacks, and frustration with administrative handling of issues. Billing practices raise concern in a few reports, including charging for services not provided and perceived manipulative sales tactics. Transparency around pricing and acceptance of Medicaid is inconsistent across reviews — some say Medicaid is accepted, others say it is not — and several mention high monthly rates (reported around $5,500–$6,000) plus sizable administrative upfront fees.

Safety and health incidents: The facility’s safety features for dementia care are a consistent positive. Yet a small number of reviews recount serious negative events: an infection outbreak tied to a COVID-safety lapse in one wing and at least one death mentioned in the context of that outbreak. These reports are outliers relative to the many positive safety comments, but they are significant and suggest a need for continued vigilance on infection control and staff adherence to safety protocols.

Patterns and suitability: Brookdale Shawnee appears especially well-suited for elders with moderate-to-advanced memory-care needs: the environment, staff expertise, programming, and security features are repeatedly praised in that context. A few reviewers note the community might be less suitable if only one of two family members requires memory care (i.e., couples with differing levels of need). Cost is a clear limiting factor for some families, particularly given the reported upfront fees and mixed messages about Medicaid acceptance.

Conclusion and recommendations: The dominant pattern in these reviews is one of strong, compassionate memory-care with an active program of therapies, outings, and personalized attention — delivered in a secure, pleasant environment. The main issues to be aware of are inconsistent experiences tied to staffing turnover, localized cleanliness or odor problems, mixed dining reviews, occasional administrative or billing concerns, and the high cost of care. Families considering Brookdale Shawnee should prioritize a careful tour, ask about current staffing stability and turnover rates, request written clarification on billing and Medicaid policies, and inquire about infection control practices. For those whose top priorities are specialized dementia care, structured activities, compassionate staff, and a secure, home-like setting, Brookdale Shawnee receives many strong recommendations; for families highly price-sensitive or seeking uniformly consistent administrative responsiveness, these reviews indicate potential areas for caution.

    About Brookdale Shawnee

Brookdale Shawnee sits in a peaceful area, offering single-story ranch style living with no steps or elevators, and the buildings are secure with three neighborhoods holding 18 apartments each, so things don't get too crowded and folks can get around easier, and they keep the doors and grounds locked while letting residents enjoy the outside with safe walking paths, gardens full of flowers, and a patio to sit in the sunshine or shade, which helps everyone who likes fresh air and quiet. Residents can choose from several studio apartment floor plans named Boston, Concord, Dover, Hartford, and Lexington, and each one comes with a private bath, walk-in shower, closet, combined living and sleeping area, window views, and even a kitchenette for those who like to make their own snacks or coffee, or you can take your meals in the dining room where the chef rotates menus and can fix low fat, low salt, vegan, diabetic, gluten-free, or regular foods. Staff keep things running around the clock, so help's always close for bathing, dressing, laundry, meal preparation, grooming, or just to get an to a meal or activity, and there's a nurse on-site 24 hours with LPNs and trained aides, plus visiting doctors and therapists coming by for physical, occupational, or speech therapy and help with things like medication or blood work if someone needs it.

If someone has Alzheimer's or other memory problems, Brookdale Shawnee's got a memory care team and dedicated areas that use extra safety features like exit sensors and alarms on bracelets to keep residents from wandering off, and the staff know how to handle challenging behavior and keep people calm with a gentle structure to the days so life feels more familiar and predictable. The care program follows each resident's own plan, with things like reminders for restrooms, medication, nutrition, or exercise, and they have special programs-like music groups, gardening, spiritual activities, and trips-that help keep minds and bodies busy. The place looks homelike inside, with armchairs, quilts, and touches like a little house structure with an American flag, and small details to remind residents of the comforts of home, and if you want to socialize, there are common rooms with art, a pub area, piano, activity rooms, and even an old-fashioned ice cream parlor for sundaes, as well as communal dining where guests are welcome for a meal.

For daily life, staff help with chores such as housekeeping, linen service, maintenance, and they offer companions or aides for walks, exercise, or outings, plus there's transportation for doctor visits, errands, or church, either free or paid, and a gym, putting green, and salon and spa where you can get a haircut or try some pampering, and for animal lovers, you can keep a dog or cat, and staff can help with pet care if needed. The grounds are kept secure for easy, safe wandering, and residents can spend time in the gardens, putter in the greenhouse, or join friends in indoor or outdoor spaces, and there are plenty of places to sit and chat, do crafts, play games, read with the book club, or sing together in a group.

Brookdale Shawnee accepts residents aged 55 and older and serves people at different care levels, so someone can start in independent living, move to assisted living if they need more help, or stay right in memory care for extra supervision, and there's also adult day care, home health, or skilled nursing as needs change, making it easier for folks to stay put as they get older instead of moving again. The staff handle therapies for memory care, everyday health, diabetic checks, dressing changes, behavior support, hygiene, and even incontinence care, though insulin shots can't be done by the team without help, and they keep up with background and driving checks to keep everyone safe. Staff members speak English and Spanish, and the community works with the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce, accepts credit cards, and has plenty of guest parking for visitors. Guests can come to activities, attend devotional services, join for communal meals, and make use of all the indoor and outdoor areas alongside the residents. Brookdale Shawnee does its best to make every day structured, active, and safe for people who live there, no matter how much or how little help they happen to need.
