    Pleasant rehab stay safety concerns

I had a pleasant rehab stay - beautiful, updated grounds and facilities, clean rooms, good food and dining, useful amenities (salon, library, on-site podiatrist/doctor, activities), and very friendly, professional staff who clearly take their jobs seriously; I felt well cared for and would highly recommend it. My main reservation is concern about dementia/Parkinson's care and reports of significant COVID outbreaks/staff infections during my time.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews is largely positive about Calhoun County Medical Care Facility’s staff, cleanliness, and rehabilitation services, but there are important and recurring concerns related to COVID-19 outbreaks and specific care for residents with dementia/Parkinson’s.

Care quality and clinical services: Multiple reviewers praise the facility as an excellent option for rehabilitation—describing their rehab stays as pleasant, well organized, and professionally managed. Staff are frequently credited with high competence and compassion; reviewers specifically mention knowledgeable caregivers, caring bedside manner, and both frontline and administrative staff taking their roles seriously. Several reviewers call the facility among the best local rehab/nursing options and strongly recommend it for short-term rehab stays.

Staff and culture: The dominant theme across reviews is positive interaction with staff. Descriptors such as nice, friendly, helpful, and pleasant are common. Reviewers highlight staff who are attentive and dedicated, and at least one former worker provides a favorable inside perspective. Gratitude toward frontline caregivers and therapy personnel appears repeatedly, reinforcing a perception of an engaged workforce that delivers hands-on care and therapeutic services.

Facilities, dining, and amenities: The building is repeatedly described as clean, updated, and attractive with pleasant surroundings. Amenities often listed include an on-site hair salon, library, podiatrist/doctor access, and recreational offerings. The dining room is noted as nice and the food generally favorable. Reviewers also mention that the facility meets health and safety standards and is organized, which supports its positive reputation for environment and operations. Room size and feel are mentioned—some reviewers describe rooms as resembling hospital rooms, which may be perceived as impersonal by some families.

Activities and therapy: Recreational and therapeutic programs (bingo, games, organized activities, and formal therapy) receive positive mentions and contribute to patient satisfaction, especially during rehab stays. However, several reviewers state that COVID-19 restrictions have affected the availability or delivery of therapy services, limiting some residents’ access to usual rehab programming at times.

Management, safety, and COVID-related concerns: A notable and serious pattern in the reviews concerns COVID-19. Multiple reviewers report high COVID case counts, high staff infection rates, and multiple resident deaths during outbreaks. There are allegations from reviewers about misreporting COVID data to make statistics appear lower, and descriptions of moving COVID-positive residents to hospitals during major outbreaks. These reports introduce significant concerns about transparency, outbreak management, and the facility’s handling of infection control during peak periods. While some reviews still assert the facility adhered to health and safety standards, the COVID-related accounts are a clear negative theme that potential residents and families should investigate further.

Variability in experiences and specific care gaps: Although many reviewers describe very positive rehab experiences and caring staff, there are contrasting reviews expressing deep disappointment, especially regarding specialized long-term care needs. One review specifically calls out poor dementia care for a resident with Parkinson’s, suggesting that quality may vary by unit or by the complexity of residents’ needs. Another reviewer praises an alternate campus (the Oaks) as wonderful, indicating that experiences may differ between units or wings. This variability suggests that while the facility performs strongly in many areas (especially short-term rehab), families seeking long-term memory-care or Parkinson’s-specific services should ask detailed questions and consider visiting the specific unit.

Overall impression and considerations: Synthesis of the reviews indicates Calhoun County Medical Care Facility is widely regarded as clean, well run, and particularly strong for rehabilitation—supported by skilled, compassionate staff and a range of resident amenities. However, serious concerns around COVID outbreaks, reported staff infections, resident deaths, and allegations about reporting reduce confidence for some reviewers and underscore the need for due diligence. Additionally, there are targeted complaints about dementia/Parkinson’s care and some impressions of rooms as hospital-like.

Recommendations for families considering this facility: weigh the facility’s strong track record for rehab, clean environment, and active staff against the documented COVID-era issues and the reported variability in dementia-related care. Ask management about current infection-control protocols, historical outbreak handling, and transparency practices; request specifics on dementia/Parkinson’s care staffing, training, and unit-level practices; and, if possible, tour the particular unit where the resident would be placed to assess room environment and observe staff-resident interactions firsthand.
