    Caring staff, responsive but imperfect

I placed my mom here and overall I'm very pleased - the staff are caring, knowledgeable, kind and consistently helpful, giving daily updates; she's happy, well cared for, and enjoys activities in a smaller, home-like community. There are some issues - occasional strong urine odor, sparse weekend staffing, staff turnover/training and communication could be more proactive, and food can be hit-or-miss - but staff are responsive (they shampooed carpets after an accident), shower help and in-room dining have improved, and persistence gets things resolved. I'm grateful for the attentive team and would recommend this facility.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is positive, with repeated and strong praise for the staff and the general care environment. Most reviewers emphasize that staff are helpful, caring, supportive, and attentive; move-in experiences are described as positive and families frequently say their loved ones are happy and that they would recommend the community. The facility is viewed as a smaller, home-like setting with nice rooms and individualized attention. Practical day-to-day strengths include daily room cleaning, improved shower assistance, allowance for in-room dining, and responsiveness to incidents (for example, carpet shampooing after an accident). Activities such as bingo are enjoyed by residents, and the presence of a new chef is noted as a forward-looking plus.

Care quality and staff performance are the most consistently praised areas. Multiple summaries highlight staff thoroughness, friendliness, knowledge, and inclusivity; families express gratitude and high overall satisfaction with how residents are treated. The smaller community size is repeatedly cited as enabling more personalized attention and a family-like atmosphere. Communication is sometimes described as good — with daily updates reported by some families — and the management and staff receive direct commendations for being supportive and making residents feel at home.

However, several patterns of concern appear across reviews that temper the otherwise positive picture. The facility is undergoing management changes and some reviewers report related glitches, staff turnover, and training shortfalls. These transitions have led to inconsistent service in places and a perceived need for better, more proactive communication from leadership. Reviewers explicitly ask for more consistent and proactive updates rather than having to reach out repeatedly. Weekend coverage is flagged as a notable operational concern: staffing is described as sparse on weekends and reviewers note there is no real medical personnel available during those times, which could be a safety and continuity-of-care issue for some residents.

Facilities and cleanliness receive generally favorable comments, but occasional odor problems (notably urine odor) are mentioned by multiple reviewers. While housekeeping responsiveness is a plus — e.g., dealing with accidents promptly — odor control appears to be an area needing better, consistent attention. Dining is a mixed area: several reviewers say the food is "hit or miss," with a new chef recently introduced; this suggests potential improvement but current inconsistency in meal quality. Activity programming is another area where families see room for improvement; while residents enjoy specific offerings like bingo, the overall frequency and variety of activities are described as insufficient by some.

In summary, August Haus presents as a caring, small, home-like community with many strengths centered on staff compassion, individualized attention, and a generally clean and welcoming environment. Key weaknesses to address are operational and systemic: better staff training and stabilization following management changes, more proactive and consistent communication with families, improved weekend clinical staffing, more consistent food quality, expanded activities, and stronger odor-control practices. Families report generally positive outcomes and would recommend the community, but also advise staying engaged and persistent to ensure issues are followed through — an indication that the facility is responsive but could be more consistently proactive.

    About August Haus

August Haus sits in Gaylord, Michigan, tucked back in the woods with a small, comfortable setting and only 20 beds licensed for assisted living by the State of Michigan, and it's managed by GLD Management Company. The facility has full-time staff on site 24/7 for safety and support, including a nurse that's there part-time, and personal care assistants help with things like bathing, dressing, grooming, medication reminders, and moving around. The building itself is wheelchair accessible, and has private apartments, including STANDARD PRIVATE STUDIO, LARGE PRIVATE STUDIO, and ONE BEDROOM SUITE options, each with its own bath, some with patios, and all have kitchenettes, cable TV, furnished or unfurnished, and free high-speed internet.

Meal service happens three times a day, with home-cooked meals and special diets for things like diabetes and allergies, and if folks want, there's a hot chocolate bar and even a music and wine program. Housekeeping, laundry, linen service, and on-site salon for haircuts and barbering are included, so residents don't have to worry about chores, and there's a dry-cleaning service if it's needed. Residents can bring pets, and couples are welcome. There's a garden, walking paths, patio, and common spaces inside, like an arts and crafts area and entertainment room for games and music, and folks get together for movie nights, religious services, or just to enjoy group activities the staff schedules, including guest musicians, therapy visits from a dog named Lucky, and a busy community calendar.

August Haus supports seniors with mild dementia or Alzheimer's, with specialized housing designed to help prevent confusion and wandering, and staff provide care and structure to keep everyone safe. If someone's care needs change, they can get memory care or a move to a higher level of care, without extra fees for more support. There's a 24-hour call system and emergency alerts to be sure help comes quick, and staff can help with arrangements for transportation or doctor visits.

Therapies like physical and occupational therapy are available if scheduled, and there's a fitness and wellness program the residents can join. The staff works to help everyone make friends, stay active, and feel at home, whether playing games, joining hobby groups, or just chatting with neighbors or visitors over a meal. People from Region 9 waiver programs can move in, and August Haus has all-inclusive pricing, so all the main services and amenities are bundled together without surprise fees. Check payments are accepted, and there's sometimes a move-in special with the admin fee waived and the first month's rent discounted. For those that just need a temporary stay, respite care is available. The location makes it easy to get to parks, medical centers, restaurants, shopping, and churches in the Gaylord community. Residents and families can take a tour to see the rooms, meet the staff, and learn about daily life inside August Haus, which opened in 2018 and has kept a focus on safe, caring living with dignity and respect for every senior who calls it home.
