    Attentive staff, engaging activities, joyful

I can't say enough about the attentive, compassionate staff - they became a second family and treat residents and families with real dignity and respect. Activities are outstanding and engaging (music, outside entertainers, themed events like BBQs and Mongolian nights), and meals are mostly home-cooked, farm-to-table and fun - though I've heard occasional complaints about menu choices and pricing. My mother loves the care; life here feels comfortable, secure and joyful.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is predominantly positive, with strong and recurring praise for the quality of care and the interpersonal approach of the staff. Multiple reviewers emphasize attentive, kind, and compassionate caregiving; several describe staff as becoming a second family and say that residents and families feel comfortable, secure, and appreciated. Comments about dignity, respect, and making life more comfortable suggest that clinical care and emotional support are seen as strengths of The Porches.

Dining receives mixed but specific attention. Many reviewers highlight home-cooked meals made from scratch, farm-to-table and locally sourced fare, and a range of special dining events such as Fun Food Fridays, Mongolian BBQ, shrimp and crab boils, and summer BBQs. These descriptions indicate that the community invests in varied and celebratory dining experiences that are meaningful to residents and families. However, at least one reviewer strongly disagrees, calling the food horrible, not elderly-friendly, and listing hotdogs, chicken nuggets, and coleslaw as examples of poor offerings; this reviewer also characterizes the food as overpriced. The pattern suggests high variability in dining experiences — while many praise fresh, creative menus, others have experienced meals they view as low quality or inappropriate for older adults.

Activities and programming are another prominent theme. Most reviews praise outstanding, fun, and engaging activities, including music programs and outside entertainment, and note the community is up-to-date with programming trends. These comments point to an active social calendar and efforts to provide varied stimulation. Still, there is at least one report that activities are not engaging; this indicates that while programming is generally well-received, it may not consistently meet the preferences of every resident or family, or that some offerings could benefit from better tailoring or execution.

The facility atmosphere and family experience are described positively overall. Reviewers repeatedly call the environment home-like and say it makes residents and families feel at home. Words such as dignity, comfort, secure, enjoyable, appreciation, and gratitude recur, reinforcing the impression of a supportive and welcoming community. Several reviewers explicitly state that their family member loves the care and that The Porches provides the best care outside of family, which is a strong endorsement of both daily living support and relational aspects of caregiving.

Notable patterns and concerns center on inconsistency, particularly around dining and, to a lesser extent, activities. The contradictions between multiple accounts of high-quality, locally sourced meals and a distinct complaint about poor, non-elderly-friendly, and overpriced food suggest variability across time, shifts, or units. Similarly, while programming is largely praised, a minority report of unengaging activities suggests opportunities to diversify offerings further or solicit resident-specific feedback. There are no repeated complaints about clinical safety, neglect, or staffing shortages; the staff are overwhelmingly described as attentive and compassionate.

In summary, The Porches receives strong commendations for caregiving, staff responsiveness, a home-like atmosphere, and many of its meals and activities programs. The primary areas for management attention are ensuring consistent meal quality and appropriate, age-friendly menus, addressing perceptions of pricing/value, and continuing to refine activity offerings so they consistently engage all residents. Overall sentiment leans positive, with several glowing endorsements tempered by a small but notable group of concerns about dining and occasional activity engagement.

    About The Porches

The Porches is a family owned and operated community that stays open every day, always with staff on hand to help around the clock. This large group home sits out in a quiet, wooded part of Michigan and can serve up to 20 aged or physically handicapped residents at a time, with a license number AL690394101 from the state. Folks live in roomy suites, choosing from a studio, a one-bedroom, or a one-bedroom with a patio, each with big windows for looking out over the trees and wildlife. Every suite has its own front porch where the daily mail comes right to the door, and some rooms have patio doors that open straight onto the courtyard. People here can join in for group walks, gardening, movie nights, music from their younger days, and plenty of activities put on by the residents or the wider community, all meant to help people get to know each other. Meals are fresh each day, cooked by the in-house culinary team, with healthy options and ingredients grown nearby. Mealtimes and activities are chances for folks to see friends and neighbors. There's also a barber and salon on the property, an arts room, and paved paths for walking. When residents need help, staff offer kind and attentive care, always ready for small or big needs, with a 24-hour call system in place and support for daily activities. The Porches is wheelchair accessible and works to create a place that feels like part of a growing family, taking a personal approach for each person's care. People can find health services including support for dialysis at nearby centers. The Porches covers independent and assisted living services, including memory care and nursing home care, and it's a continuing care retirement community for those who are hoping to stay somewhere long term. Residents can see spiritual and local community centers not far from the campus, and there's also a life enrichment program to help meet social, physical, and spiritual needs. Folks can find The Porches online, including on social media and through their website theporches.life, where people can see more about what daily life is like.
