    Excellent caregivers, poor facility quality

I'm very grateful for the staff - loving, professional, Christian-inspired caregivers who knew residents by name, communicated well, and provided excellent, attentive care that put my mind at ease. The facility itself is very small, cramped, dark and dated with shared, modest rooms, limited dining/activity space, bare-minimum rehab (no therapist), and families must supply personal hygiene items; it also felt overpriced. Bottom line: outstanding people and care, but the accommodations and rehab services need real improvement.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: Reviews show a strongly positive consensus around the quality of direct care and the character of the staff at Edison Christian Health Center. Most reviewers emphasize compassionate, loving and attentive nursing and aide staff who treat residents like family, know them by name, and provide personalized support. Multiple accounts highlight excellent communication practices (regular phone calls and emails), meticulous recordkeeping, and a long-tenured workforce. The facility’s Christian-inspired mission and faith-based approach to care is repeatedly noted and appreciated by families, particularly around end-of-life care where reviewers described gentle support and gratitude for staff presence in residents' final hours.

Care quality and staffing: The prevailing theme is that the caregiving team is the facility’s strongest asset. Many reviews call out professionalism, empathy, and a patient-focused approach, with staff going above and beyond to put families at ease. That said, there are isolated but serious reports of unprofessional behavior — profanity, name-calling, and social media harassment — which stand in stark contrast to the otherwise overwhelmingly positive views of staff. These negative incidents are not the norm in the reviews but are significant and should be probed during a tour or reference check. Staffing levels and skill mix also show variability in the reviews: while many describe excellent attentive care, others indicate staffing problems that affect service and accommodations.

Facilities and setting: The facility is described as small, quiet, and tucked into a neighborhood with pleasant grounds and a bird sanctuary — a setting many families find peaceful. Reviewers like the availability of an all-purpose event room and that pets can visit. However, the physical plant has notable limitations: rooms are repeatedly described as small, sometimes shared, and giving an institutional or cramped feel. Several reviewers say the building is dark and in need of updating; showers located in hallways and limited dining areas per hall are specifically cited as drawbacks. Some describe accommodations as outdated or even “dump-like,” while others emphasize cleanliness, so the general picture is of a well-cleaned but aging, compact facility.

Rehabilitation, memory care, and activities: Reviews about therapeutic services are mixed. Multiple reviewers state that this is not a strong rehabilitation facility — citing no on-site rehabilitation therapist or only minimal rehab offerings — while at least one review asserted good rehab services. Memory care availability is another constraint: reviewers report the memory care unit is often full and that residents with high care needs may not be accepted. Activities exist (bingo, crafts, music) and are appreciated, but several reviewers feel there is not much going on or that programming could be more robust and engaging.

Dining, supplies, and cost concerns: Opinions on food vary — several reviewers praise the food quality, though often noting the menu is repetitive; others describe the food as horrible. A clear recurring concern is that personal hygiene and toiletry items are not provided by the facility and must be supplied by families, and there are reports of items sometimes being reused. Cost is also frequently mentioned as a downside: multiple reviewers call the facility expensive, and at least one mentions insurance payment delays. Prospective residents should budget for out-of-pocket items and clarify contract and billing policies.

Patterns, trade-offs and recommendation for prospective families: Edison Christian Health Center appears to offer excellent, compassionate, faith-based hands-on care in a small, family-like environment that provides strong communication and emotional support. The trade-offs are physical space and services: small/shared rooms, an older building, limited rehab and memory-care capacity, and some inconsistent dining experiences. There are also occasional serious reports of unprofessional staff behavior that merit investigation. For families prioritizing personal, compassionate care, spiritual orientation, and a quiet neighborhood setting, this facility is frequently recommended by reviewers. For those who require robust rehabilitation services, private/single rooms, more modern accommodations, or guaranteed memory-care placement, this facility may not meet needs without further clarification.

Practical suggestions for evaluation: During a visit, ask specifically about private room availability and waitlists, the presence and schedule of rehabilitation therapists, staffing ratios, and how the facility sources personal care items. Request details on infection-control practices around item reuse, review sample menus over several weeks, and ask to speak with current families about any negative incidents and how they were handled. Verify costs, billing timelines and how insurance payments are managed. Finally, seek references from families whose loved ones have similar care needs to the person you are considering placing, to confirm fit with expectations and needs.

    About Edison Christian Health Center

Edison Christian Health Center is a non-profit senior community with a clear Christian mission, focused on care for the body, mind, and soul, and they've got all the basics covered, so residents can get the services needed as they age, whether it's independent living, assisted living, or skilled nursing care for long stays, dementia, or just getting stronger between hospital and home, since that's the kind of thing they do every day. The facility has 136 beds, is Medicare and Medicaid certified, and runs round-the-clock with skilled nursing staff so there's always someone ready to help, which can be a comfort for people who need a higher level of care. Edison Christian Health Center has short-term rehab for folks needing to recover, with therapy services like physical, occupational, and speech therapy, offered every day, plus a Restorative and Maintenance Program that's meant to keep people moving and steady after the rehab ends. For residents with memory loss, there's a 23-bed secure unit called Ritzema Hall, with a safe outdoor courtyard, raised flowerbeds, a wheelchair-accessible swing, and a path for walking or wheeling, so people can get out and breathe a little fresh air. They have on-site dental and eye care, lab services, X-rays, a barbershop, and a beauty salon. Meals are planned by chefs and meal planners, and they have nutritional counseling, with the idea that food should taste good and be good for you, and laundry and housekeeping are included. The rooms are on the smaller side and may feel a bit like a hospital, but each has air conditioning and a television for comfort, and the staff has a reputation for being compassionate, helpful, joyful, and kind. Edison Christian Health Center offers spiritual and recreational activities, aiming to support residents' social and spiritual needs alongside physical care, especially for those with Alzheimer's or other dementias, using approaches meant to be meaningful even when memories fade. Assisted living and independent living options are available within the Christian community, and staff provide help as needed, always with a focus on Christian compassion. The center's patient experience ratings cover everything from nurse and doctor communications to room cleanliness and quiet, and it's been ranked at the top percent for extended care and recognized by the Women's Choice Award for high quality and patient satisfaction, which is based on objective criteria. People can book appointments by phone. There are infection and accident ratings available for different kinds of health events common in hospitals and nursing facilities, though those are not always perfect anywhere, but they do keep up with standards and regulations to protect the residents.
