    Caring staff, limited medical oversight

I'm grateful for the amazingly caring, hands-on staff - my mom is content, eating well, and the cottage feels home-like with great food and reasonable pricing. However, management/ownership can be absent or uncooperative (limited medical oversight, high turnover), COVID restrictions have curtailed activities, and residents get little exercise. Staff deserve praise, but I'd be cautious if you need strong medical leadership or consistent management.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment from these summaries is mixed but leans positive among family members and residents, with a significant and specific negative account from a former employee that raises important concerns. Multiple reviewers praise the facility’s caring staff, home-like setting, affordability, and good food, and they note that residents are treated with respect and remain content. At the same time, a former-employee summary contains several serious allegations about management conduct, staff turnover, and lack of medical oversight that contrast sharply with the more favorable reports.

Care quality and daily life: Many reviews emphasize strong hands-on care — staff are described as caring, loving, helpful, and respectful. Several people say residents are treated like adults, receive good care, and are eating well. There is also mention of an RN being on site and ongoing staff education, which supports a perception of clinically attentive care. However, one reviewer (a former employee) claims residents get "zero exercise" and describes the operation as schedule-driven rather than homelike, which, if accurate, would be a substantive concern about the day-to-day programming and residents' physical activity.

Staff and management: Staff performance is the most frequently praised element: reviewers use words like "amazing," "loyal," and "hands-on" to describe caregivers and managers. Several comments specifically commend staff for going above and beyond, and one review highlights staff loyalty and continuing education. Conversely, a strongly negative former-employee review names a manager (Toni) who allegedly lacks a medical background, refuses family input, argues with others, and smokes in the garage. That same negative account asserts the owner is rarely present and limited to handling money. These directly conflicting depictions (some reporting a hands-on manager and owners who visit vs. the negative account of absentee ownership and problematic management behavior) are a clear pattern: the facility receives both high praise and substantial criticism regarding leadership and staff stability.

Facilities and amenities: Positive descriptions of the physical environment include a "home-like" cottage, a convenient location near family, and an appealing outdoor space with a gazebo and regular sighting of deer — features that contribute to a residential feel. One reviewer, however, explicitly states it is "not a home," implying that certain practices or routines may make the place feel institutional to some observers. COVID-era restrictions are cited as limiting activities in at least one review, which is understandable given the pandemic but worth noting as an explanation for reduced programming in that period.

Dining and activities: Food is repeatedly mentioned positively — "amazing food" and reports that residents are eating well. Activities are described as engaging in several reviews, and families felt residents were safe and occupied through the pandemic. Again, the negative review counters with claims of no resident exercise and a schedule-driven environment; this discrepancy suggests variation either over time, between different households/units within the facility, or in individual perceptions.

Patterns, contradictions, and recommendations: The dominant pattern is favorable impressions from families and residents centered on caring staff, respect for residents, good meals, reasonable pricing, and an appealing, home-like property. The main outlier is a former employee who provides detailed, unfavorable claims about management practices, medical oversight, smoking by staff, owner absence, and high turnover. Because these are serious allegations that directly contradict other reviewers’ experiences, they create uncertainty about consistency and leadership.

If you are evaluating Island Pines Residential Assisted Living, weigh the generally positive family/resident reports against the former-employee allegations. Specific due-diligence steps to take based on these reviews: ask about staffing continuity and turnover rates; verify the manager’s and staff’s credentials and roles (including clinical oversight and the RN’s hours); inquire about exercise and activity schedules; ask how COVID restrictions were handled and whether activities have resumed; request clarification on owner involvement and financial/operational responsibilities; and observe staff–resident interactions in person. The available reviews suggest the facility can offer compassionate, respectful care in a pleasant setting for many residents, but the conflicting reports about management and exercise/activities warrant direct verification prior to placement.
