    Beautiful facility, systemic care concerns

I have very mixed feelings. The building is beautiful, modern and spotless with spacious rooms, great meals, lively activities and several truly caring staff (Hilde and CNA Kaylee stood out) who treated residents like family. That said, I observed under-trained/baffled employees, poor care for non-communicative or severely impaired residents, unempathetic management decisions, and even state infractions-issues serious enough that I wouldn't trust this place for a loved one with advanced needs. Lovely facility and some compassionate staff, but systemic problems mean I can't fully recommend it without major changes or outside oversight.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is mixed but leans positive in many dimensions while containing several serious, recurring concerns. Many reviewers praise Pineview Cottage for its physical environment, social programming, and for the warmth of much of the caregiving staff. Multiple families describe the building as beautiful, modern, and immaculately kept, with a first-rate layout, spacious rooms, and a location that suits community integration. The dining consistently receives positive notes—restaurant-quality meals and thoughtful snacks such as fresh fruit and chocolates are frequently mentioned. Activity programming is another strong theme: staff organize crafts, movies, puzzles, music therapy, and visiting musicians, and reviewers report residents engaging and enjoying these offerings.

Staff and day-to-day caregiving receive abundant positive mention: staff are described as friendly, helpful, attentive, and quick to respond. Several accounts highlight administrators who are available and solve problems proactively. Some reviewers emphasize a family-like culture among staff and an engaging, individualized approach to residents; particular frontline employees are named positively (for example, Hilde Bonesteel and CNA Kaylee). There are also comments that the facility has a trained memory care unit and that some staff are trained in memory care, which for many families was reassuring.

However, a distinct and serious countervailing pattern emerges in a subset of reviews. Multiple reviewers describe under-trained or baffled staff and say the facility does not manage well for residents who are non-communicative or severely impaired. Several comments allege that truly competent, attentive care only materialized when hospice services became involved. There are references to state infractions and explicit calls for state investigation; these remarks suggest regulatory or compliance concerns that prospective families should investigate further. Reports also include troubling management behavior—examples include an allegation that a sick employee was fired, and more general statements that management is unempathetic or overly concerned with profit rather than resident wellbeing.

Management and ownership viewpoints are mixed in the reviews. Some families praise the owners (including mention of an RN owner who understands senior care) and describe them as kind and knowledgeable. Others explicitly distrust the owner/operator, accusing the operation of being for-profit to a degree that compromises care and even alleging attempts to isolate residents from loved ones. There are also isolated but noteworthy incidents reported by reviewers—police being called during an interaction and a vehicle/transportation issue (truck wouldn't start)—which contribute to perceptions of inconsistency and occasional lapses in safe, smooth operations.

Taken together, the reviews suggest Pineview Cottage offers many strengths: an attractive, modern environment; robust activities and social engagement; appealing meals; and several staff and leaders who deliver compassionate, individualized care. At the same time, there are recurring, specific red flags that cannot be ignored—particularly around care for residents with advanced impairment, mixed reports on staff training and competence in those situations, alleged regulatory infractions, and concerns about management priorities and employee policies.

For prospective residents and families: consider the facility’s many positive attributes but perform targeted due diligence. Ask for recent state inspection reports and any corrective action documentation. Request details on staffing ratios, staff training specific to non-communicative and severely impaired residents, hospice integration protocols, and turnover history. Ask to meet and speak with direct-care staff across shifts and request to observe care during a typical shift (including residents with higher needs). Speak with current families, and verify any praise for specific employees or administrators. Doing so will help you weigh the generally strong environmental, social, and culinary offerings against the documented concerns about care consistency and management practices, so you can determine whether Pineview Cottage meets the specific needs of your loved one.

    About Pineview Cottage

Pineview Cottage sits in Harbor Springs, Michigan, and serves as a senior care community offering both assisted living and memory care in a cottage resort setting that feels pretty homey to most folks who move in, and you can really see that sense of comfort when you first step in the front door and get a warm welcome from the residents and staff, who do have a way of making newcomers feel at ease right away. Open since 2018 and spread across 35,000 square feet, the community contains 40 private suites, where each apartment has its own bedroom, sitting area, and a spacious, ADA-accessible bathroom. Pineview Cottage divides its apartments between 20 designated for assisted living and 20 for enhanced memory care, all focused on helping seniors live as independently as possible, but with care staff available around the clock to help with daily needs, medical care, and even cleaning, making the burdens a little lighter for everyone.

Residents at Pineview Cottage can join in on a lot of different activities, like crafts, puzzles, movies, music therapy, and social gatherings in shared spaces that include a living room, private dining room, beauty shop, on-site bar, pub, and a library, along with some unique spaces like a "This and That" room and even a canoe nearby, which brings a bit of that Northern Michigan cottage feeling. There's a real effort here to keep folks feeling comfortable, active, and social, with programs that include social, recreational, and educational activities, as well as a personalized Wellness Program that adapts to changing needs. For those who want to decorate, residents can bring their own favorite furnishings to make each suite feel more like home, and the dining options here have earned a good amount of praise for rivaling those in local restaurants.

Pineview Cottage doesn't allow pets, but does offer plenty of comfort and thoughtful details for folks needing assisted living or those with Alzheimer's disease, dementia, or other memory loss, with memory care apartments designed to address their unique needs through personalized care plans and specialized support, including help with behavioral and emotional needs. Hospice and transitional care coordination are available, and there's access to devotional services offsite. The staff, described as compassionate and dedicated, treat residents much like family, following a "Dignity in Life" mission that's visible in how they support each person's individuality and design a therapeutic environment centered on each resident. Residents, guests, and newcomers can find local visitor information on dining, shopping, attractions, Petoskey Stones, local events, and even links to area webcams. Pineview Cottage follows State License AH240389978 and stays active in the wider community through local events, business programming, and support services, quietly working to create a setting where seniors can find comfort, connection, and support as they age.
