    Homey staff, serious safety lapses

I have mixed feelings. The place is clean, homey, with kind owners and compassionate staff (Samantha was excellent), good home-cooked meals and attentive personal care at times - but chronic understaffing, poor communication, neglected breakfasts, rough conduct and serious safety lapses (a fall and a resident found near the road with delayed emergency response) mean I cannot fully recommend it.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews is mixed but centers on two clear themes: a core of compassionate, respectful, home-like care and environment, and recurring operational problems—primarily understaffing and inconsistent staff behavior—that have led to serious lapses for some residents.

Care quality: Multiple reviewers emphasize compassionate care, respectful treatment of residents, attention to personal hygiene, and an emphasis on comfort. Reviewers describe clean facilities with no odors and home-like decor, and they note that the community provides dementia care and hospice services with a focus on comfort. Several reviewers explicitly state that families felt supported and that staff attended carefully to grooming tasks (clean nightgowns, teeth brushed, hair combed, nails done). These positive comments paint a picture of individualized, warm care when staffing and communication are functioning well.

Staffing and staff behavior: A prominent and consistent negative theme is understaffing. Reviewers report that the facility is short-staffed, which appears to produce variability in care depending on who is working. While specific employees (for example, a staff member named Samantha) and the owners receive praise for kindness and competence, other staff are described as harsh or uncaring. The combination of staffing shortages and inconsistent staff conduct leads to missed or delayed care tasks and contributes to family concerns about reliability and safety.

Safety and incident response: Several reviews describe serious safety incidents that are important red flags. One reviewer reports a resident leaving the facility and being found near a road; another mentions a fall where staff did not call 911. These incidents, together with reports of inadequate responses to requests (for example, not providing warmer water) and neglected basic needs like breakfast, suggest gaps in supervision, emergency procedures, and responsiveness. These are significant concerns that contrast sharply with the positive reports of compassionate end-of-life and dementia care.

Communication and management: Opinions about management are mixed. Multiple reviewers praise the owners as nice and caring, and some describe specific staff as excellent; families in some cases felt supported. At the same time, poor communication with families is repeatedly cited. The pattern suggests that while management and certain staff members may be sincere and effective, systemic issues—especially staffing levels and staff training/oversight—are undermining consistent communication and reliable care.

Facilities and dining: The physical environment receives positive comments: clean, odor-free, and decorated to feel home-like. Dining is generally described positively as home-cooked meals, but there are reports that basic meals or breakfast were neglected in at least one instance. This inconsistency again aligns with the broader pattern: the facility can and does provide a comfortable, homelike environment and good meals, but reliability is affected by staffing and operational issues.

Patterns and recommendations for prospective families: The reviews suggest a facility that is capable of very good, compassionate care—especially in dementia and hospice contexts—when adequately staffed and managed. However, recurring issues with understaffing, inconsistent staff behavior, poor communication, and at least a couple of documented safety incidents indicate risks that prospective residents and families should investigate further. If considering this community, ask specific, concrete questions about current staffing ratios, staff training and turnover, incident logs (falls, elopements, emergency responses), communication protocols with families, and how management addresses care lapses. Visit multiple times at different hours to observe staffing levels, ask to speak with current families or read more detailed recent references, and clarify emergency procedures (including when 911 is called).

In summary, Tomlinson Assisted Living receives strong praise for compassion, personal attention, cleanliness, and a homelike atmosphere, but the positive aspects are tempered by significant operational concerns—most notably understaffing and inconsistent response to safety and care needs. These mixed reports mean prospective residents should weigh the facility's strengths against the documented lapses and seek up-to-date, specific assurances about safety and staffing before making a decision.
