    Beautiful grounds, unsafe, dirty, understaffed

I toured this Christian-based facility with my mom. The grounds are beautiful and private, the therapy team helped her walk again, and many aides were friendly and dedicated. However the building felt old, understaffed and poorly managed - very dark, filthy in places (strong urine/feces odor, cobwebs, exposed wiring), I saw a wandering incident and encountered cold, rude aides and no follow-up from management. Despite some excellent staff and lively daytime activities, I felt the environment was unsafe and would not recommend it.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across these reviews is sharply mixed, with some reviewers describing St Jude Nursing Center as a warm, elegant, and effective care environment while others report serious, even dangerous, problems with cleanliness, safety, staffing, and management. The positive accounts emphasize attractive grounds, a peaceful wooded setting and private cul-de-sac location, rooms with views, and an atmosphere that can feel classy and welcoming. Several reviewers praised a friendly, professional, and dedicated staff; notably, a therapy team helped a resident regain the ability to walk, and a social worker assisted with subsidized housing. Daytime programming was described as lively with ongoing activities, and the Christian-based orientation (prayer/meditation) was mentioned as a valued feature for some families.

At the same time, multiple reviews describe alarming deficiencies. The negative reports cite extreme dirtiness in parts of the facility — strong urine and feces odors, cobwebs on ceilings, dirty or discolored curtains, torn netting, exposed wiring, and generally filthy ward conditions. Poor lighting and signs of deferred maintenance were also called out. Several reviewers described residents appearing confused or inadequately clothed, and at least one report describes a wandering incident combined with what felt like a lack of concern from staff and management. These accounts raise substantial safety and supervision concerns.

Staffing and care quality are another area of strong divergence. Positive reviews highlight friendly, attentive, and professional caregivers and therapists who demonstrated dedication and produced measurable improvements in residents’ mobility and mood. Conversely, negative reviews allege rude, unprofessional aides, cold handling of residents, and inadequate follow-up from both front-line staff and management. Understaffing and supply shortages were explicitly mentioned in some criticisms, which could explain variability in cleanliness, supervision, and the timeliness of responses.

Facility condition and management show a pattern of inconsistency. Some visitors experienced an elegant, clean, and hospitable environment; others encountered old, outdated areas with visible neglect and hazardous conditions (exposed wiring, torn netting). The coexistence of glowing and damning reports suggests that conditions may vary by unit, wing, shift, or over time, rather than across the entire campus uniformly. Management responsiveness also appears inconsistent: the social worker and some staff were praised for helpful, concrete assistance, but other reviewers report no follow-up and a perceived lack of accountability after safety incidents.

Activities and spiritual life are generally viewed positively where mentioned: reviewers noted ongoing programming, a lively daytime atmosphere, and Christian-based prayer/meditation opportunities. Dining was not discussed in these summaries, so no reliable conclusions can be drawn about meals or food service.

In summary, the reviews paint a facility that can provide strong, compassionate care and meaningful rehabilitation for some residents, supported by welcoming grounds and committed staff. However, the same facility is also reported to have severe cleanliness, safety, and management problems in other instances. The most notable and actionable patterns are (1) highly variable experiences across different reviewers and times, (2) recurring reports of serious cleanliness and maintenance issues in some areas, and (3) mixed reports about staff professionalism and follow-through. Prospective residents and families should be aware of these contradictions and consider multiple visits at different times, direct questions about staffing levels, supervision protocols (wandering prevention), infection-control and cleaning practices, and recent inspection or citation history before making a placement decision.

The center accepts Medicaid/Medi-Cal and Medicare, which helps with the cost for many. Right now, the building is planned for updates, and construction is underway by Livonia Healthcare Real Estate LLC to add a second floor and a new rehabilitation facility, and there will be a process to transfer and discharge some residents as this work goes on. St Jude Nursing Center remains committed to making residents feel comfortable and respected every day, focusing on a homelike atmosphere, and giving practical help with both care and community needs.
