    Caring community, good value overall

My mother moved into Candlestone and I'm very pleased. Her apartment is bright, airy and homey, the community is clean and safe, meals are generally good, and staff are kind, attentive and go above and beyond with moves, updates and activities (music, crafts, social events). We've had peace of mind and good value for the price, though there are occasional staffing turnovers, some inconsistency in administration/medication follow-through, limited transportation, and infrequent bathroom/laundry service. Overall she's well cared for and I highly recommend it.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: Reviewers overwhelmingly report a positive experience at Candlestone Assisted Living & Memory Care, with many describing the community as clean, bright, and home-like. The most consistent praise centers on the staff: numerous comments describe caregivers and nursing staff as kind, compassionate, and attentive; several families say staff treat residents like family and go “above and beyond.” Multiple reviewers explicitly thanked specific leaders and clinical staff for hands-on involvement, quick responses, and for personally easing transitions. At the same time, a minority of reviews raise serious concerns (notably theft and inconsistency in medication administration), so the overall picture is strongly positive but with meaningful caveats that prospective families should weigh.

Care quality and staffing: A major strength reported by many reviewers is the quality of day-to-day care. There are repeated notes about 24-hour nursing coverage, ongoing therapy services, timely assistance (including use of Hoyer lifts for safe transfers), regular showering, and staff who help residents engage with activities. Families frequently mention that caregivers are responsive, calm during difficult situations, and supportive through transitions (including helping with off-site logistics like paperwork). However, reviewers also cite high staff turnover, periodic staffing shortages, and busyness that can delay tasks or require reminders. Several reviews reference inconsistent medication timing and follow-through, and a small but serious cluster of reports alleges theft by staff with unsympathetic responses from management. These negative items reduce trust for some families and are among the most important issues to clarify during a tour.

Facility, rooms, and safety features: Candlestone receives strong marks for its physical plant. Common themes are cleanliness, bright/airy architecture, high ceilings, bay windows/sliding doors, and well-kept décor. Apartments come in multiple layouts and sizes, including wheelchair-accessible one-bedroom units with large bathrooms and walkout patios. Outdoor features such as a welcoming courtyard and walking paths are frequently praised. On-site amenities cited across reviews include a beauty shop/salon, theater, in-room refrigerators and cable, and community gathering spaces. Safety measures and reminders/check-ins are described positively by many families, contributing to peace of mind, though a few reviewers found the building entry procedure (buzz-in/front door access) awkward because staff are not always immediately available to admit visitors.

Dining and nutrition: Dining receives mixed but mostly favorable feedback. Reviews praise the culinary staff, with multiple comments that meals are tasty and often made from-scratch; alternatives and soft-food options (cottage cheese, pudding, applesauce, yogurt) are available. Several families say residents love the food and that the dining room is bright and inviting. At the same time, there are recurring criticisms: some meals arrive lukewarm, have missing components (e.g., missing cheese), or are not textured appropriately for seniors who need easier-to-chew options. A handful of reviewers explicitly called the food “adequate” rather than exceptional. Prospective residents with specific dietary or texture needs should ask for menu samples and clarification on how the kitchen accommodates those needs.

Activities and social life: Life enrichment and activities are another commonly praised area. Reviewers mention a range of programming—music, crafts, cultural lessons, game nights, weekly happy hours, family-inclusive events, and outings (when available). Several reviews highlight a thoughtful recreation director and increased planning under newer activity leadership. Memory-care programming is available, but a few reviewers felt activities were somewhat limited in the memory-care neighborhood; others were pleased with the engagement and family programming. Social atmosphere varies by resident: many reviewers describe a warm, family-like community where residents make friends and participate; one review noted that some residents tended to stay in their apartments, indicating social outcomes may depend on individual resident preferences and mobility.

Management, communication, and administration: Communication and leadership are frequently cited positively—reviewers often note responsive executive-level staff and named leaders who personally help families. Families appreciate regular updates, photo/video check-ins, and staff involvement in transitions. Conversely, some reviews reference inconsistent administration or care-director turnover, especially in periods following COVID-19, and that promises made during touring/marketing were not always matched in practice. A handful of reviews describe difficulty getting issues resolved promptly or encountering unsympathetic responses when problems (including alleged theft) were raised. These patterns point to generally good leadership but with variability that prospective families should probe (ask about staff retention, escalation paths, and incident-response policies).

Logistics and other concerns: A practical, recurring downside is the lack of an on-site transportation van for doctor appointments and outings; multiple reviewers mention that transportation is unavailable or constrained. The front-door buzz-in process, while a safety feature, frustrated some visitors when staff were not immediately available to let them in. Housekeeping and laundry comments are mostly positive, but a few reviewers noted infrequent bathroom cleaning or unclear laundry procedures. COVID-era visiting restrictions were also mentioned as a source of distress by some families, reflecting past policies rather than current operation. Finally, while many reviewers call the cost reasonable or a good value, pricing is tiered by level of assistance and some families expect costs to change over time.

Bottom line: Candlestone is frequently described as a warm, clean, and well-equipped assisted living and memory care community with many strengths—especially in staff compassion, facility quality, activities, and family-focused communication. Important areas to investigate in person are medication management practices, turnover and staffing stability, how the community handles incident reporting (particularly around personal property), transportation options, and specific dining accommodations for texture/dietary needs. For families prioritizing compassionate staff, a bright environment, and active programming, Candlestone receives strong recommendations from many reviewers; for those with heightened concerns about medication timing, property security, or transportation, follow-up questions and references are advisable before deciding.
