    Beautiful facility, dangerous medical lapses

I found the facility beautiful, clean and homey - warm Victorian decor, pleasant gated courtyards, good food, hair service and a wide range of living options. Caregivers, aides and front-office staff (Peggy and admin) were generally kind, attentive and responsive, and residents seemed happy, but staff quality was mixed and activities were inconsistently offered. I was very concerned by serious lapses in medical judgment and delayed/denied medical help (which led to ambulance delays and a patient placed on a ventilator), and the place is expensive - I'd recommend the compassionate caregivers but caution families with high medical needs or tight budgets.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is mixed but leans positive for everyday assisted living services and the facility environment, with some significant and specific safety/management concerns raised by multiple reviewers. Positive themes are repeated frequently: residents and families praise the food, cleanliness, welcoming décor (warm colors, flowers, Victorian/old-fashioned touches), and secure outdoor spaces including gated courtyards. Many reviewers highlight kind, compassionate aides and attentive caregivers, as well as responsive administrative and front-desk staff — specific staff members such as Peggy (front office) and Shelly (tour guide) are called out by name for positive interactions. The facility is noted to offer multiple levels of services (assisted, independent, in-home, day programming), in-house hair services, private rooms, and a variety of social activities and games according to several accounts.

Care quality is described positively by numerous reviewers who mention attentive caregivers, quick assistance, thorough and kind administration, and staff who are polite and professional. Families report appreciation for the thoughtfulness of care plans, promptness, and courteous interactions. Staffing levels are described as adequate in several reviews, with compassionate aides and management that responds to questions. These strengths contribute to a warm, homey atmosphere that many residents and visitors find comforting.

However, there are notable negative patterns that materially affect overall assessment. Multiple reviews point to mixed staff quality — while many caregivers are praised, some staff are described as inconsistent in professionalism and competence. Several reviewers explicitly stated that the ownership and/or directors behaved unprofessionally, including allegations that owners made medical decisions they were not trained to make. Most concerning are reports that staff denied medical assistance in at least one instance, followed by a delayed ambulance response and a severe deterioration of the resident's condition (reports mention the patient being placed on a ventilator and suffering pneumonia and heart failure). These reports represent serious red flags about emergency protocols, medical decision-making, and escalation policies at the facility.

There is also conflicting information about activities and programming: some reviewers describe active social programming, menus, games, and gatherings, while at least one reviewer reported that activities were not being offered. Physical facilities receive generally positive comments about appearance and outdoor spaces, but practical concerns such as smaller room sizes and long corridors are mentioned. Cost is another recurring concern — several reviewers describe the facility as expensive or a pricing worry for families. Importantly, multiple reviewers warned that the facility may not be suitable for residents who require a high level of medical or hands-on assistance, underscoring a possible mismatch between advertised services and the facility’s capability for high-acuity care.

In summary, DaySpring Assisted Living appears to provide a clean, attractive, and homey environment with many compassionate caregivers and supportive administrative staff, strong dining and on-site services (including hair services), and secure outdoor spaces. These strengths make it appealing for many prospective residents, particularly those seeking a friendly assisted living environment with social programming. At the same time, there are serious and specific concerns about management practices, inconsistent staff quality, emergency response, and the facility’s ability to manage residents with significant medical needs. Families considering this community should weigh the positive atmosphere and caregiving reports against the red flags about medical decision-making and emergency handling, ask for clear documentation of the facility’s emergency protocols and staff credentials, verify how the facility handles higher-acuity residents, confirm activity schedules, inspect room sizes, and discuss pricing and contract terms in detail.

    About DaySpring Assisted Living

DaySpring Assisted Living sits at 572 Lake Forest Lane in Roosevelt Park, MI, and has been offering care since 1999, building a reputation for its honest, steady approach with a 4.4-star rating from a handful of online reviews, and you'll see that the community serves older adults through several levels of care including assisted living, memory care, independent living apartments, in-home care, and adult day services, all with support from a fully trained, accessible staff guided by the principles of God's love and an outlook focusing on nurturing and individualized help, and they've got options for people with Alzheimer's or dementia too, providing a whole section in a secured building with bracelets that alert staff if someone wanders and memory care rooms that are available in studio or semi-private settings, so people with tough behavior issues can be cared for in a safe spot, and you'll notice right away how they balance support and independence, because as a resident ages or needs more help, they can remain within the community and shift to higher care, which means less upheaval and a steadier life.

The place offers assistance with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, transferring, medicine management, diabetes monitoring (including insulin injections), and even extra support for bowel or bladder incontinence with reminders and care, and there's a nurse on staff between 12 and 16 hours a day to help with medical needs, plus 24-hour supervision, wheelchair-accessible showers, and transfer help for residents who need lifts or hand-on-hand moves, ensuring seniors get what they need without being hurried or forgotten. The living spaces come in different options, including furnished private rooms with cable TV, kitchenette, air conditioning, phone, and high-speed internet, and the rooms have private bathrooms for comfort, so people can feel at home whether they choose memory care or more independent settings.

Meal services are a strong point, since the dining is restaurant-style and features chef-prepared meals with all-day dining, special choices for allergies or diabetes, and flexible options so people don't always have to eat at a set time, which makes things feel more relaxed, and outside of meals, you'll find services like housekeeping, laundry, family support, move-in help, and a beauty salon on site for those wanting to keep up on appearances without leaving the campus, while transportation for errands or appointments is available for an extra cost, and there's free resident parking as well. The pet-friendly environment and open common areas with both indoor and outdoor spots, including walking paths and gardens, give everyone a place to relax or get a bit of sun, and the activity and events calendar is packed with resident-led groups, movies, music programs, arts rooms, fitness spots, a library, spa/wellness room, game room, and scheduled outings so people are never short on something to do if they want to join in or just sit with neighbors, with devotional services also available.

Devoted to safety and well-being, DaySpring has emergency alert systems, secured building features, and regular checks by staff, especially in memory care where wandering can be a real concern, and there's support for people who need hospice or respite services as well as those who just need help for a short time. Staff work to help each resident keep as much independence as possible, crafting plans so the right help is offered without overstepping, giving older adults opportunities to choose what they can do themselves. With specialized support for Alzheimer's, dementia, diabetes, and even residents with some harder behavioral problems, the community aims to cover a wide range of needs, and they also make sure to include families in the care process, offering advice for long-term care decisions and coordinating moves, which can be a relief when things get complicated. The place maintains a comfortable, lived-in feel, and while it's not luxury, they emphasize reliable care, safety, and a sense of belonging, focusing on keeping everyone engaged, comfortable, and treated with respect as their needs change through the years.
