    Clean but negligent, unfriendly, untrustworthy

I wasn't offered a tour-only a package. The place is clean, attractive, and has good activities with medical staff supervised by a nurse, but staff seemed uninterested and at times mean. We experienced medication errors, hygiene neglect (never showered, unexplained bruising), and what felt like lies and cover-ups. The price was far out of our budget, so we left after two days. Overall very clean and well-appointed, but I can't trust them and I wouldn't recommend it.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews is strongly mixed, with a clear split between reviewers who praise the facility and those who report serious problems. Multiple reviewers highlight positive aspects such as a clean, attractive building, organized activities (daily exercise classes, art projects, gardening), private apartments, communal dining, and medical oversight by a nurse. These reviewers generally felt the staff were friendly and capable, and that the facility could provide appropriate care for a loved one. Several comments emphasize cleanliness to a high standard and an otherwise positive reputation that made the placement decision easy for them.

Counterbalancing those positives are extremely serious negative reports from other reviewers. These accounts allege neglect and abuse, including claims that some residents were not showered, had visible bruising (black and blue handprints), and experienced medication errors. Some reviewers describe staff as mean, uninterested, or engaged in dishonest behavior or cover-ups. There are reports of very short stays where families removed their relatives after only a couple of days due to perceived mistreatment. The tone of these negative reviews ranges from critical of staffing and management to calling for the facility to be shut down, indicating deep dissatisfaction and safety concerns among some families.

Staff and care quality emerge as the most polarized theme. On one hand, several reviewers explicitly praise the staff as great, friendly, and attentive; on the other hand, others accuse staff of neglect, poor hygiene management, and even physical mistreatment. The presence of nurse supervision for medical staff is noted positively, but reported medication mistakes and allegations of cover-ups undermine confidence in clinical safety for some families. This inconsistency suggests variable performance—some residents receive attentive, clean, and engaging care while others reportedly experience serious lapses.

Facilities and activities are generally described positively: the building is attractive and very clean, apartments provide private living space (though without kitchenettes), and scheduled activities such as exercise classes, art projects, and gardening are available—though gardening participation may be limited for residents with mobility or arthritis issues. Dining appears to be communal in a main dining room. These operational strengths are cited by families who feel comfortable placing loved ones there and who value the social and activity offerings.

Admissions, communication, and cost are recurring operational concerns. At least one reviewer experienced a poor admissions process (no tour, only packet information), and several reviewers raise affordability as a major issue—describing pricing as high, out of range, or "out of hand." Management and transparency are questioned by reviewers who reported alleged cover-ups and dishonest responses after incidents, which compounds worries raised by the more severe allegations of neglect.

In summary, the reviews paint a facility with clear strengths—cleanliness, an attractive environment, structured activities, nurse-supervised medical staff, and positive experiences for some residents—paired with alarming and specific accusations of neglect, medication errors, physical harm, and poor staff behavior from other reviewers. The pattern is one of inconsistent care: some families report satisfaction and good outcomes, while others report rapid removal of loved ones due to safety and hygiene concerns. Prospective residents and families should weigh both the positive reports and the serious allegations. Based on these reviews, it would be prudent to seek a thorough, in-person tour, ask for documentation of staffing levels and medication protocols, review recent inspection or board-of-health findings, and request references from current families before making decisions.

About St Anne's Mead Retirement Home

St. Anne's Mead Retirement Home has served seniors in Michigan since 1966, operating as a licensed Home for the Aged and skilled nursing home with a nurturing, friendly atmosphere. The community provides a wide range of services from independent living and assisted living to memory care in a 10,000-square-foot memory care home with 21 private rooms, plus extended care, hospice, and respite stays, so residents can age in place and get more care as needs change. Residents get help with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, and medication management, and staff use mechanical lifts for those who can't walk or need extra support, with a preference for medium care, though care levels range from light to heavy.

Experienced aides, many who've worked there 10 to 30 years, and highly trained nurses provide 12-16 hour nursing and 24-hour supervision. There's always awake staff on duty for emergencies, and a dedicated medical director oversees care. Memory care stays safe with technology like alarm bracelets. The Life Enrichment Program offers activities-music, art, gardening, exercise classes, movie nights, and social events-designed to help alertness and reduce confusion, with programs for all residents including those with dementia.

Amenities cover just about everything needed for daily life: three meals a day made by an executive chef, accommodating special diets like kosher or vegetarian, housekeeping, laundry, linen service, physical, speech, and occupational therapy on site, plus a beauty and barber shop, hobby and craft rooms, guest rooms, business room, fitness area, library, game room, spa/wellness room, and both indoor and outdoor gathering areas with patios, courtyards, and gardens. Residents get cable TV and phone service, free Wi-Fi, and can join devotional services both onsite and offsite.

Special touches include on-site podiatrist visits every month, visiting dentists, therapies, and social workers like Michelle Kotwicki who help with care planning. Social connections are important here-there are daily activities, resident-run groups, outings, and big events like the popular Pet Parade & Blessing. Residents often stay a long time, and staff know everyone by name.

Security comes from 24-hour supervision, a call system in each room, secure memory care tech, and a caring staff. The Next Step Program helps families transition from hospital or rehab, and respite stays give caregivers a break when needed. The community has wheelchair-accessible showers, tubs, incontinence care, diabetic care with insulin management, and options for non-ambulatory residents.

St. Anne's Mead runs as a mission-driven, non-profit with a Board of Trustees and a team of leaders including an Executive Director, Family Liaison, Maintenance Director, Life Enrichment Director, and more, supporting transparent policies and ongoing staff training. Reports from recent years show the facility's commitment, and they've won awards for care, activities, and their joyful, welcoming spirit. Residents find a clean, home-like place where independence is encouraged, meals relieve the stress of cooking, and everyone can join activities or just relax with friends, with staff providing respectful help as needed. The community's known for its interfaith outlook, open to people from all backgrounds, and it salutes first responders and hosts unique events like Breakfast with the Bishop. Families and residents can get information or support through calls or email, and there are programs to educate about aging and wellness. With decades of experience, St. Anne's Mead gives seniors a place to live with support, connection, and honest care.
