    Warm staff, attractive but inconsistent

I toured and placed my dad here and overall I was impressed: staff are warm, caring, and helpful (nurses, caregivers, dining and custodial teams stood out), the building is attractive and clean, and there are lots of activities plus restaurant-style dining and apartment-style rooms with kitchenettes. My concerns: the place often seems short-staffed and overworked (especially nights), care can be inconsistent, rooms are on the small/dated side, and administrative/food issues pop up. It feels homey and active and could be a great fit if you can afford it and accept occasional staffing/management shortcomings.

    Summary review

Overall impression Reviews for Sunrise of Troy are predominantly positive, with strongest and most consistent praise aimed at the staff, the sense of community, and the breadth of activities and amenities. Many reviewers describe the staff as caring, personable, and professional, and they highlight a home-like, family atmosphere where staff know residents by name. The building and common areas are frequently called beautiful and well-decorated, with restaurantlike dining, an attractive façade, courtyard views and a variety of shared spaces such as a salon, crafting rooms, music/piano areas and a game room. Residents are described as active and entertained, and families often emphasize that their loved ones are pleased to be there and well looked after. A number of reviewers explicitly recommended the community and described their overall experience as excellent or highly satisfactory.

Care quality and staffing Care quality is a central theme with a generally favorable tilt. Many reviews note compassionate nursing and caregiving teams, available RNs, good medication management, and dedicated effort from staff even when residents have higher support needs. Several accounts praise long-tenured staff and a strong sense of team unity, and some families specifically commend hospice partners for supportive end-of-life care. At the same time, a meaningful minority of reviews raise concerns about staffing levels and consistency. Multiple reviewers describe caregivers as overworked or short-staffed, and some report insufficient night staff or long waits for assistance. A few families reported incidents in memory care, including multiple falls and questioned supervision. These mixed reports suggest that while staff frequently go above and beyond, staffing shortages or turnover can affect reliability and response times in some shifts or situations.

Facilities, rooms, and environment The facility is often described as beautifully decorated and clean, with many amenities that create a residential, upscale feel. Apartment-style rooms with kitchenettes or studio layouts are repeatedly noted as appealing features, and dining and common areas receive high marks. However, multiple reviewers point out that individual resident rooms are on the small side and can feel bare despite the attractive common spaces. Some physical elements are mentioned as dated or in need of refresh, such as carpeting, and a small number of visitors reported an initial urine odor at entry. Construction or renovation at times made it hard for visitors to form a stable impression. The site is on a busy intersection, which some noted as a downside due to noise or traffic. Air conditioning has been called slow to cool in some instances.

Dining, housekeeping, and daily operations Dining receives mixed-to-positive feedback overall: many reviewers praise varied, home-cooked meal choices, an appealing dining room environment, and outstanding dining staff. Several families described meals as excellent and restaurant-quality. Conversely, some accounts report inconsistent meal temperature (food served cold), occasional shortages, or general dissatisfaction with dietary care. Housekeeping and custodial staff are praised by many, but isolated lapses are reported—examples include irregular vacuuming, unemptied trash cans, and clothing or items left piled. Some families requested additional services such as a regular manicurist. Administrative operations are a mixed area: while many families describe prompt, informative communication and helpful admissions staff, there are also repeated mentions of billing and administrative mistakes, incorrect or misdirected bills, and at least one mention of an unfriendly finance staff interaction.

Activities, community life, and suitability One of the strongest consistent positives is the active program calendar. Reviewers list frequent activities (bingo, movie nights, group outings, church visits, student visits), social events, and opportunities for engagement both inside and outside the community. This lively environment is often said to be an excellent fit for social, active seniors who want frequent engagement. That said, several reviews caution that some activities may not be well adapted to lower-functioning residents or those with advanced memory-care needs; families of residents with higher support levels reported a mismatch between programing and resident capabilities in some cases.

Safety, memory care, and family access Safety and memory-care quality show variability in the reviews. Some families highly praise memory-care staff for compassionate, capable handling of residents with greater needs and for licensed nurses who are responsive. Other families raised significant concerns, including reports of multiple falls and questions around supervision and adequacy of memory-care staffing. Visitors also noted visible security staff and a sense that many employees provide oversight, but strict COVID-19 protocols have at times limited family access and made visits more difficult. Prospective families should directly ask about current visitation policies, staffing ratios in memory care, and incident reporting when touring.

Management, communication, and costs Communication is often commended—many reviewers felt welcomed during tours, received good follow-up, and had positive interactions with admissions and care managers. Nevertheless, administrative inconsistencies (billing errors, occasional dismissive interactions with management) appear frequently enough to be considered a pattern. Pricing and affordability are recurrent concerns; while many felt the services justified the cost, some families described Sunrise of Troy as pricey and out of budget. There are also mixed reports on staff turnover; while some emphasize long-serving employees, others note turnover that affected consistency of care.

Bottom line and recommendations for prospective families Sunrise of Troy appears to be a strong option for seniors who value an active, social community with many amenities, restaurant-style dining, a welcoming and home-like atmosphere, and generally compassionate staff. The most reliable strengths across reviews are staff warmth, community engagement, cleanliness of common areas, and an appealing physical environment. Key caveats are room size and occasional dated elements, as well as recurring reports about staffing shortages, inconsistent care during certain shifts (notably nights), and some administrative problems. Memory care experiences are mixed and warrant careful inquiry.

If you are considering this community, recommended steps before deciding include: touring multiple times (including during meal service and activity hours), asking detailed questions about current staffing ratios and night coverage, requesting recent incident and staffing records for memory care if relevant, confirming billing and residency paperwork procedures, and clarifying visitation policies especially if COVID measures remain in place. Those who prioritize social programming, meals, and a home-like environment will likely find Sunrise of Troy a good fit; families for whom consistent 24/7 hands-on staffing and larger private apartments are critical should probe those topics closely during their evaluation.

    About Sunrise Of Troy

Sunrise of Troy has served seniors since 2001 and is well known in the area, offering care for people who need anything from independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing to memory care and short-term stays, so folks can get help whether they're mostly independent or need more hands-on support, even hospice care if that time comes, and for people with conditions like dementia and stroke they have programs and specialized staff in place, along with a dedicated Memory Care neighborhood that includes features like a vintage jukebox and calm, sun-filled spaces for folks who might feel a little lost. The facility has received over 280 National Quality Awards-more than any other assisted living provider in the country-and they've built up a caring team, many of whom have been there for years, working hard to keep residents safe with strong health measures and technology like the Sunrise CareConnect system that tracks care and medications, plus they help residents meet with doctors through telehealth visits so they don't always have to leave the building for appointments. Residents can bring their pets and enjoy spacious suites with kitchenettes and attractive furniture, and there are activity areas with puzzles, a bistro, a lounge with a fireplace, a theater, and even modeled kitchens and bathrooms so people can see what living spaces are actually like, not just in a brochure. The dining rooms-one of them private and used for special occasions-are set up to feel both homey and a little elegant, with art on the walls, and the kitchen staff is happy to work in favorite recipes. There's a big focus on personalizing care and activities to individual needs, whether someone likes classic movies in the theater room, music in the lounge, gardening, or just spending quiet time in one of the sunrooms or sitting areas that look out on the grounds; staff try to match hobbies, interests, and abilities as well as they can, and they provide all types of therapies like physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Sunrise of Troy aims to help residents stay as healthy and independent as possible for as long as they can, with 24-hour staff, nurses, doctors on call, and services like beauty and barber shops, religious gatherings, and transportation for errands or outings. Families and residents remark on the caring atmosphere, and the place pays special attention to things like medication management, daily tasks, and helping seniors stay connected and engaged, whether they want lots of activity or some peaceful time in the quieter corners.
