    Beautiful facility but staffing concerns

I toured and later had a family member there: the grounds and building are beautiful and spotless, apartments are comfortable, dining/activities are abundant, and therapy/rehab staff can be excellent. Many caregivers were warm, helpful and went above and beyond. However, I also witnessed serious problems - chronic understaffing, slow or unresponsive call/phone responses, poor communication, and on occasion medical neglect. Overall it's a lovely, well-equipped community with many caring people, but confirm staffing, responsiveness and incident history before choosing.

    About The Orchards at Canterbury-on-the-Lake

The Orchards at Canterbury-on-the-Lake sits on 40 wooded acres that are designated as a Wildlife Habitat, giving folks a peaceful place with lots of natural beauty all around and scenic lake views from many spots. The whole community keeps a home-like, warm feeling, where people can gather with friends and neighbors or find a quiet spot to themselves if that's what they like, and you'll see a real effort here to make everyone feel welcome and comfortable. They have a faith-based mission guiding daily work, and the staff stays on-site all day, every day. There are many apartment choices, such as studios and roomy one- or two-bedroom layouts, and people can pick based on their needs or budget, since payment and fee options change depending on apartment type and care level needed. This place covers independent living, assisted living, memory care in The Meadows Memory Care residences, skilled nursing, and even short-term rehabilitation, so if someone's needs change, they don't have to move somewhere else-the transitions go smoothly.

There are wellness programs, physical therapy, and other rehabilitation services right on site, plus health services like hospice care, medication reminders, pharmacy, psychiatric care, and care staff available 24 hours a day. Folks with Alzheimer's or dementia get special programs meant to keep their interests and abilities strong, in a setting designed to prevent confusion and wandering, and there's a nurse on staff part-time and full-time support in both memory care and skilled nursing. Apartments have things people need, like WiFi, cable TV, kitchen appliances, and a 24-hour emergency call system, on top of regular housekeeping, laundry, linens, and maintenance. Meals made by chefs and meal planners offer nutritious options daily.

The grounds include gardens, walking and hiking paths, and pet-friendly spaces, which is a big plus for people who like being outdoors or have a pet, and inside, amenities like a swimming pool, hot tub, exercise room, coffee shop, computer area, and salon with barber services give people options without having to leave campus. Social life is covered, too, with arts and crafts, music, games, movie nights, bingo, Tai Chi, yoga or stretching classes, and organized trips off-site. Transportation, a shuttle, and shopping trips provide independence. Staff can give help with bathing, dressing, grooming, or medication, and there's a focus on dignity and personal choice for how people spend their day, whether joining activities or spending quiet time in the communal lounges or their own place. The Orchards at Canterbury-on-the-Lake gets its licensing checked twice a year and belongs to the BUILD group, which keeps standards steady. This place is meant for people who want to live on their own terms while knowing there's care and a friendly community always nearby.
