    Beautiful facility but unsafe care

I placed my mother in a gorgeous, brand-new community with amazing food, engaging activities, and many kind, hard-working staff who felt like family. Unfortunately chronic staff turnover and poor leadership left memory care unsafe - missed meds, residents left in soiled clothes, belongings gone, terrible communication, and even hospitalization for one resident. Beautiful and expensive - it could be top-notch if management stabilizes, but I can't recommend it in its current state.

    Summary review

The reviews for Hampton Manor Hamburg Assisted Living & Memory Care are strongly polarized, revealing a facility with many attractive features and serious, recurring concerns. On the positive side, numerous reviewers describe a brand-new, beautiful, and well-maintained campus with upscale amenities — theater, spa, library, courtyard, private patios, and pet-friendly policies. Dining gets frequent praise: three daily meals, multiple snack stations, homemade meals, and a highly regarded chef (Chef Ann is mentioned by name). Several families and residents emphasize a warm, family-like atmosphere, robust activities and programming (bingo, social events, a proactive activities director), and attentive caregivers who create strong social bonds and improve residents’ mental well-being. Multiple accounts commend management and staff for being responsive, professional, and focused on making residents comfortable, with particular appreciation for end-of-life care and the partnership with Arbor Hospice.

However, a substantial portion of the reviews raise serious and specific concerns about care quality and safety. Recurrent themes include chronic staffing problems (high turnover, short-staffing), inconsistent performance across shifts, and allegations of unqualified memory-care staff. Several reviewers describe neglectful conditions — residents left in soiled briefs or dirty pajamas, rooms not cleaned unless repeatedly requested, and missing personal belongings. There are also concerning reports of missed medications, poor transfer coordination (particularly on weekends), and delayed or missing family notifications following falls, lacerations, or hospitalizations. One alarming allegation describes a patient with COVID who was not fed, leading to weight loss and hospitalization. These are not isolated complaints: some families report having to move loved ones to other memory-care facilities for better care.

Management and leadership emerge as another divisive theme. While some reviews praise administration for being accommodating and intent on “spoiling” residents, others accuse leadership and ownership of being corrupt, focused on profit rather than care, and responsible for contributing to staffing and quality problems. Several reviewers report frequent involvement by state regulators and explicitly suggest a decline in care quality following administrative changes. There are also mentions that some positive reviews may be fake, indicating mistrust from detractors. Taken together, these comments suggest variability in oversight and management effectiveness over time or across teams.

The contrast between the facility’s physical and programmatic strengths and the allegations about day-to-day caregiving creates a clear pattern: Hampton Manor Hamburg appears to offer excellent amenities, dining, and social programming, but the consistency and reliability of direct care — particularly for residents needing memory care or higher-dependency assistance — is uneven. Positive experiences often describe attentive, kind staff and rapid responses to issues. Negative experiences emphasize safety lapses, inadequate training or staffing, and poor communication with families. Specific operational problems reported multiple times (missed meds, soiled clothing, missed notifications after incidents, possession loss) are red flags that warrant careful inquiry.

For prospective residents and families considering Hampton Manor Hamburg, the reviews suggest a cautious and evidence-based approach. Verify current staffing ratios and turnover rates, ask about memory-care staff training and supervision, request recent state inspection reports and any corrective action plans, and discuss protocols for incident reporting and family notification. During a tour, seek concrete answers about weekend coverage, medication administration processes, housekeeping schedules, and how the community manages residents prone to agitation (including choices of programming and media in common areas). If memory care is needed, request examples of staff credentials, supervision, individualized care plans, and the facility’s ability to manage behavioral symptoms safely. Finally, consider speaking with multiple families with residents in the specific unit you are evaluating to get a sense of recent consistency.

In summary, Hampton Manor Hamburg presents as a high-amenity, well-appointed community with many staff and residents reporting excellent meals, strong activities, and compassionate caregiving. Simultaneously, a notable subset of reviews raises serious allegations about inconsistent care, safety lapses, and management problems — especially in memory care and during administrative transitions. Those positive features may be appealing, but the repeated safety and staffing concerns mean families should perform thorough due diligence, confirm current conditions, and monitor ongoing performance closely before making placement decisions.
