    Small new community, caring staff

I had a mostly positive experience at this small, brand-new 14-bed community - a right-sized private apartment in a clean building with nice surroundings and spacious parking. Staff were kind, compassionate and attentive (especially during the end-of-life care), meals were personalized and prompt, and many are trained for memory loss; residents are treated like family. My caveats: it's small with few activities and no strict schedule, some staff seemed inexperienced or not on top of things, so I worried about whether my mom would truly fit in or feel fully "homey."

About The Waterford At Wilderness Hills Memory Care

The Waterford At Wilderness Hills Memory Care sits over on Keystone Drive in Lincoln, Nebraska, and serves seniors who need a safe place with professional help, especially those living with memory loss, dementia, or Alzheimer's. The community, which is locally owned and operated, includes the dedicated Wilderness Hills Memory Care section-this is a purpose-built and secured building with its own studio apartments, emergency call system, and secured patios and walking paths so folks can get some fresh air without worrying about wandering off. The whole place focuses on keeping residents healthy and safe, with doors and technology like bracelets with alarms to stop people from getting lost, and the staff stays awake and on duty around the clock, always checking in to make sure everyone's cared for and comfortable.

You'll notice they keep a high staff-to-resident ratio here, so people get more attention each day for things like bathing, dressing, grooming, and even tricky medical needs-nurses supervise, trained team members help with medication, blood sugar checks, even insulin shots, and there's a doctor on call plus a nurse practitioner who serves as medical director, while visiting specialists such as dentists, podiatrists, or therapists can drop in when needed. When someone needs extra help standing or transferring, staff uses mechanical lifts or offers two-person assistance, and they're able to support seniors who get confused, show behavioral symptoms, or are at risk of wandering or acting out physically, all with as much dignity and structure as possible. Support is available all day for everyday life and personal care, along with reminders for things like hygiene, eating, and going outside for walks or just relaxing in the courtyard.

Amenities are simple and focus on daily comfort, starting with three family-style home-cooked meals every day and snacks, plus a friendly dining atmosphere that encourages socializing at the table, which can make a big difference when loneliness starts to creep in. People are also offered regular exercise, housekeeping, and access to an on-site beauty and barber shop, and there's complimentary WiFi and cable TV included for those who like to watch a little television or Skype a family member. The staff plans engaging activities working with an activity director, so the days have some rhythm and folks have chances to talk, move around, and try both indoor and outdoor activities-sometimes even simple things like walking up and down the hall makes life better. Residents with different levels of need can stay in the same community and get more help when it's needed, allowing for easier transitions between assisted living and memory care, rather than having to start over somewhere new.

The Waterford At Wilderness Hills Memory Care makes a point to keep a community feel, with plenty of encouragement, family support groups, and a staff that tries to see every resident as part of the family, offering support through all stages of life and working to make the place feel like a true home. The community is pet-friendly, has a studio apartment floorplan, provides scheduled tours for new families, and partners with home health and hospice providers when needed. Families can expect supervision and care from people dedicated to quality and residents' feelings of independence and personal value. There's no pretending here; it's a home that supports people with advanced memory issues, uses straightforward safety precautions, and delivers basic comforts in a place where health and security matter most.
