    Kind staff and accessible facility

I love Madison House. The staff are kind, caring and responsive - Brittany, Dawn and Christy stood out - and they truly go above and beyond. The facility is spotless, well-managed and very accessible (roomy layouts, accessible showers, plenty of space for walkers/wheelchairs and outdoor areas). Meals are good and activities (Bible study, music, crafts, bingo) keep residents joyful even with COVID limits; they also offer doctor-ride options. I highly recommend it.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly positive, with nearly all summaries emphasizing the quality of staff, the welcoming atmosphere, and the cleanliness and upkeep of Madison House. Staff are the most frequently mentioned strength: reviewers repeatedly describe employees as kind, helpful, personable, and responsive. Several staff members are singled out by name (Christy, Dawn, Brittany/Brittney), with specific praise for their roles in tours, activity programming, resident engagement, and making guests and residents feel welcome. Reviewers note that staff often go above and beyond, support volunteers, and maintain strong, positive relationships with residents.

Care quality and resident experience emerge as central themes. The community is described as joyful and close-knit, with residents characterized as friendly and appreciative. Activities are diverse and meaningful — reviewers mention crafts, music, sing-alongs, Bible study, bingo, games, puzzles, and partnerships with local organizations like the Norfolk Senior Center. An activities leader (Dawn) is highlighted for consistently arranging engaging events. Even during periods when activities were limited because of COVID, reviewers acknowledged that staff took precautions and still sought to provide programming. Transportation support is a noted practical benefit, with up to five doctor-appointment rides available to residents.

Facilities and accessibility receive clear praise. The building is described as clean, spotless, well-managed, and nicely decorated. Reviewers appreciate the smaller, cozy scale of the community along with accessible design features: wheelchair- and walker-accessible common rooms, ample space in studios, and accessible showers. Multiple floorplans are available (studio, extended studio, one-bedroom, and separate bedroom options), giving prospective residents choices. Outdoor amenities — walkways around inner squares and a garden area — are valued for providing outdoor access while still being in a contained environment.

Dining and meals are generally viewed positively. Several reviews explicitly call out good food and overall dining satisfaction, although the dining room's smaller size is mentioned and could be perceived as a drawback for those who prefer larger communal dining spaces. The responsiveness of dining staff and the overall accommodating nature of the staff contribute to dining being a positive part of the living experience.

Management, tours, and operational practices are also noted positively. Prospective residents and visitors report enjoyable tours, friendly and informative tour staff, and useful follow-up like video messages after tours. Reviewers call the community well-managed and recommend it to others. The facility is portrayed as volunteer-friendly and integrated with the broader community, which adds to its appeal for people who want an engaged living environment.

The primary concerns raised in the reviews are limited and specific. Activity offerings were curtailed at times due to COVID-19 precautions, which some reviewers noted affected programming frequency. The dining room size is smaller than some might prefer, potentially limiting space during peak meal times or larger gatherings. A few mentions of steps encountered by visitors suggest there may be small navigation or entry points that require attention for some visitors, although overall accessibility inside the community is repeatedly praised.

In summary, Madison House is consistently presented as a well-kept, warmly staffed, and community-oriented senior living option. Strengths include exceptional staff, varied and meaningful activities (when not curtailed by pandemic restrictions), multiple housing options with accessible features, outdoor amenities, supportive transportation services, and strong cleanliness and safety practices. The few negatives are situational and modest — mainly pandemic-related activity limitations, a smaller dining room, and isolated step/navigation concerns — and do not overshadow the overwhelmingly positive impressions reported by residents, visitors, and volunteers. The dominant pattern is high satisfaction and frequent personal recommendations from those who have toured, volunteered, or lived there.

Residents can bring their pets, enjoy a secure, gated campus with walking paths and gardens, relax in Jacuzzi tubs or spa rooms, and visit the on-site beauty salon, library, and computer room, plus there's cable TV in common areas, fireplaces, and plenty of spaces for group activities. Folks living at Madison House can count on three meals a day prepared by a professional chef, and there's restaurant-style dining, room service, and an onsite private dining room for special occasions, with menus that accommodate diabetic, low salt, vegetarian, or low fat diets and snacks available anytime. The community offers a lot of activities to keep everyone busy and connected, from arts and crafts, music, reading in the library, tabletop games, gardening, and outings for shopping, fishing stories, and church services, with both online and in-person faith options led by a visiting chaplain or rabbi, so everyone's spiritual needs are covered. The campus is fully handicap accessible, with emergency call systems and safety features in every area, and families can visit anytime, join a meal, or ride along for a field trip, and scheduled transportation is available for doctor visits, shopping, or local events. Housekeeping, laundry, and linen services take chores off residents' to-do list, and the maintenance team keeps everything working and tidy, and families pay with checks, insurance, Medicaid, or Medicare, which helps with planning. The community keeps an eye on residents' health and well-being with medication reminders and management, incontinence and diabetic care, and staff ready to support at all hours, and the care team encourages everyone to join in activities, swap recipes, or just gather around the piano in the living room so life feels familiar and friendly. Madison House tries to be a place where older adults can keep some independence if they want, find help when they need it, and have access to activities, companionship, security, and health services in one setting, regardless if they're here for a short stay or a new home.
