    Friendly staff but poor hygiene

I've made great friends, enjoy monthly outings, nicely decorated rooms and very good food, and many staff-especially one wonderful nurse-are loyal, passionate and go above and beyond. However I observed serious lapses in basic care: urine/bathroom odors, greasy/unwashed hair, dirty cups/silverware, missed breakfast/coffee, and I even saw an RN leave a resident sleeping upright all night because the chair wouldn't recline. Staff are clearly overburdened and participation/game partners can be hard to find. It's a caring place in many ways, but I can't recommend it given the hygiene and safety issues.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in these reviews is mixed, with strong praise for the staff, social life, and accommodations on one hand and serious concerns about basic personal care and cleanliness on the other. Multiple reviewers highlight committed, experienced caregivers and an engaging activities program, but at least one review reports significant lapses in hygiene and basic assistance that raise red flags about consistency of care.

Care quality: reviewers express conflicting impressions. Several comments describe "stellar" care, an experienced RN, and staff who are passionate about the elderly and treat residents like family. Those accounts emphasize high clinical skill, individualized attention, and an elevated level of emotional support. In contrast, another review documents troubling neglect of basic care tasks—residents left upright all night, inadequate face and hand wiping, greasy/unwashed hair, and an apparent lack of routine morning assistance. These opposing views suggest variability in the quality or consistency of direct care; some residents receive excellent attention while others experience significant shortcomings.

Staff and operations: staff loyalty and dedication are recurring positives—many reviewers feel staff go above and beyond and form close bonds with residents. At the same time, several negative notes point to staff being overburdened, which may explain inconsistent attention to basic needs and cleanliness. The combination of strong individual caregivers and apparent staffing or workflow strain suggests the facility may be providing good care when resources allow, but is vulnerable to lapses when workloads are high.

Facilities and cleanliness: the physical environment receives mixed remarks. Rooms are described as nicely decorated, and the social environment supports strong friendships. However, there are specific complaints about cleanliness and odors: urine smell and bathroom smell are mentioned, along with dirty cups and silverware. One notable comfort/safety issue is that a chair could not recline because of a shelf behind it, and a resident was reportedly left sitting upright all night. These points indicate that while the facility can offer pleasant living spaces, there are operational and maintenance issues affecting resident comfort and hygiene.

Dining and kitchen service: dining receives both positive and negative comments. The food is called "very good," indicating satisfactory meal quality for some residents. Conversely, there are reports of missing morning service items (no breakfast tray, no coffee provided) and dirty tableware. This juxtaposition suggests that meal preparation quality may be acceptable, but service delivery and tableware sanitation need improvement or are inconsistent.

Activities and social life: the facility appears strong in programming—monthly outings, diverse entertainment, and an environment where residents "are not often bored" are cited. Staff and programming foster fun despite difficult circumstances. That said, some residents face participation challenges, especially difficulty finding partners for games or activities, which can limit engagement for those who are less mobile or socially connected. Overall, activities are a definite strength but may not be equally accessible to every resident.

Patterns and recommendations: the dominant pattern is a split between strong interpersonal care and activity programming versus lapses in basic hygiene, cleanliness, and service consistency. The presence of devoted, skilled staff coexists with indications that staffing levels or workflows may not be sufficient to guarantee consistent basic care. Prospective residents and families should weigh both sides: the facility can provide excellent, compassionate care and an engaging social environment, but there are credible reports of neglect in essentials like morning care, sanitary conditions, and service routines.

Actionable questions to raise if considering this facility include: current staffing ratios and turnover, protocols for morning care and hygiene, measures for laundry and dish sanitation, how the facility responds to odor/cleanliness complaints, how chairs and furniture are chosen to meet residents' physical needs, and how activity staff accommodate residents who have trouble finding partners or participating. Observing a mealtime and touring rooms (including bathrooms and common areas) during a visit would help validate the positive reports about food and decor and check for the cleanliness and care concerns noted in the reviews.

    About Sorensenn

Sorensenn, sometimes called Golden Livingcenter - Sorensen, sits in Omaha, Nebraska and offers a variety of care options for seniors, like independent living, assisted living, nursing home care, memory care for Alzheimer's, and even day care and hospice services, so folks needing different levels of help can find something that fits their needs, and with age limits usually starting at 55 or 62 years old, those coming here are mainly older adults looking for a safe place to live. The community keeps 64 certified beds and usually has about 58 residents, giving an occupancy of 91%, which means most spots are full and folks tend to stay a while. Staff are on hand at all hours, including registered nurses (0.79 hours per resident), licensed practical nurses (0.85 hours), and certified nursing assistants (1.71 hours), totaling 1.64 care hours for every person, and this shows a focus on medical support, plus there's always someone around if anyone needs help fast, which can be a real comfort if something unexpected happens.

Everyone gets a full health approach, with skilled nursing, medicines and care for special needs like diabetes, incontinence, tracheostomies, or colostomies, plus staff help with things like moving from the bed to a wheelchair or making sure insulin levels don't get out of whack, while also making sure pain, skin issues like bedsores, and infections are carefully watched, so residents get checked for things that can affect their well-being. The facility gives out flu shots and shots for pneumonia, and the meals are planned by chefs and nutritionists, which can make a difference for those who need a certain diet or just want a good meal, and they try to make sure everyone gets enough to eat and no one's losing weight for no reason.

Rooms come in studios or one-bedroom layouts, and you can pick private or semi-private setups, often with a kitchenette, private bathroom, cable TV, a phone, air conditioning, and internet, so it's fairly comfortable, and staff will help with moving in, keep rooms clean, do laundry, and even offer dry cleaning, so those are a few less things to worry about. For social life, there's an arts room, a movie theater, games, and a library, and you'll find indoor and outdoor spots for people to meet up, as well as paths outside for walking or gardens for digging in the dirt if that's your thing, which helps folks stay active and meet others, especially if they're new to the area. Residents and their families are encouraged to join councils so people can have a real say in what goes on, and a social worker with psychology training helps with care and planning, which can mean better support for each individual.

Safety matters here, since Sorensenn is fully sprinklered and has alerts throughout the building, so if there's a problem, staff can respond in a hurry, and the place is approved for both Medicare and Medicaid, which is important for many families thinking about cost. There are devotional activities, trips out, fitness and wellness areas, programs to keep people moving and thinking, as well as transportation to help folks get around town or to appointments, and the whole staff tries to be kind and friendly, making it easier for seniors to adjust and feel welcomed. Some memory care services exist for those with Alzheimer's or memory loss, and skilled nursing is always there for more serious health needs, meaning people can get more help if their needs change over time. You'll find that meals are a social time in a dining hall, with restaurant-style options and special diets if needed, and care plans are made personal for each resident. The facility has private and semi-private room choices, and offers ways to support self-respect and dignity, which older adults and their families tend to appreciate, and its review scores show good satisfaction from residents and their loved ones. The for-profit ownership comes from a group with several nursing homes, and some extra services, like housekeeping or meals, could be included or cost a bit more, depending on your choice. The balance of medical, social, and support services means Sorensenn tries to help seniors stay as independent as possible, while still making sure needs are met in a steady, friendly way throughout each day.
