    Caring staff and homey environment

My loved one was in hospice at Beehive Homes of Portales and overall I'm impressed: the staff are caring, kind and understanding, the manager was helpful (even waived a monthly charge), and the home is clean with a lovely outdoor patio, dining area, activities and porch that feel like home. Rooms are small - just a single bed and recliner with an in-room shower and commode - and the food wasn't great so I sometimes had to feed her myself; a few staff members were not my favorite but most were friendly. It's the best in town in my view; I'd recommend touring it and would be hopeful to live there someday.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the collected reviews of BeeHive Homes of Portales is generally positive, with multiple reviewers highlighting the staff, atmosphere, and individualized attention as the strongest aspects of the home. The facility is repeatedly described as friendly, caring, and considerate; reviewers use terms such as "best in town," "feels like home," and praise staff for being kind and pleasant. Several comments note a clean environment and a small, home-like setting that many find appealing. Outdoor spaces such as a porch or patio are mentioned as pleasant features that residents enjoy.

Staff and management receive consistent praise, but with some caveats. Many reviewers call out specific strengths in staff behavior — friendliness, caring attitudes, and helpfulness — and one or more reviewers singled out the manager as understanding and willing to accommodate financial concerns (for example, waiving a monthly charge in at least one instance). Hospice care is explicitly noted and appears to be supported at the home, which is important to families managing end-of-life care. However, a small number of comments point to inconsistency in staff experience: "some staff members disliked" indicates that while many staff are praised, not all interactions are uniformly positive across reviewers.

Facilities and accommodations convey a mixed picture. The home's small size and home-like environment are pros for many reviewers who prefer a less institutional setting, but the rooms themselves are described as small and sparsely furnished (single bed and a recliner). Bathrooms described as in-room showers with commodes may be seen as convenient or as limited, depending on resident needs and expectations. The presence of a dining area and three meals a day is noted, and activities are offered, which contributes to a sense of daily structure and community. Outdoor porch/patio time is mentioned as a valued recreational option.

Dining and mealtime assistance are an area of concern in some reviews. While three meals a day are provided, several reviewers criticized the quality of the food, and at least one family member reported having to feed a resident themselves. This raises a potential issue around either food quality or staffing/assistance during meals for residents who need help. Families considering the home should ask about meal planning, sample menus, and staffing levels at mealtimes to clarify whether this is an isolated incident or a recurring issue.

In summary, BeeHive Homes of Portales is viewed favorably by multiple reviewers for its caring staff, homelike atmosphere, cleanliness, and supportive management, including availability of hospice care. Key strengths are the personalized, small-community feel and staff members who are often described as compassionate and helpful. The most notable concerns center on small room size and sparse furnishings, the nature of in-room bathing/toilet facilities, food quality, and occasional reports of insufficient mealtime assistance or inconsistent staff experiences. Prospective residents and families should weigh the value of a small, warm environment and attentive staff against the practical considerations of room size, bathroom configuration, and dining assistance. A recommended step is a visit or tour focused on viewing room sizes, meeting multiple staff members, sampling meals, and asking about staffing ratios and hospice support to confirm the fit for the prospective resident.

    About BeeHive Homes of Portales

BeeHive Homes of Portales is a small senior living community in Portales with a family-style setting and space for about 12 to 16 residents in each home, so things feel less crowded and more like a quiet house than a big building, and you'll see inviting touches like a wide front porch with rocking chairs and seasonal decorations. Residents can pick private or shared rooms, and each room comes with its own bathroom-some have ADA showers-and you can choose to have it furnished or bring your own things. The bedrooms are sunny with windows, bedside tables, dressers, and comfortable beds, and the homes have big open dining and living areas, plenty of recliners, TVs, and good views through large windows. There's a kitchen with oak cabinets, stainless appliances, and lots of counter space, and meals are cooked daily using fresh, healthy ingredients, with special diets like gluten-free, no sugar, or low-sodium offered if you need them.

BeeHive Homes of Portales offers Assisted Living, Memory Care, General Housing, and short-term Respite Care. Residents get help with things like bathing, medication, incontinence, laundry, cleaning, and personal care. Staff is around at all hours and will monitor medication, handle emergencies, and help people with memory needs. Residents wear pendants to call for help, and care routines are checked at move-in and adjusted as needs change. There's no nurse on-site, but consulting nurses and home health services are available when extra care is needed. This place does feel homey, especially in the memory care area, which is secure with outdoor courtyards and patios that have coded entry, so people with Alzheimer's or dementia can feel safe.

People can bring their own pets, including dogs and cats, and family can visit. Residents get cable TV, Wi-Fi, and private phone jacks in their rooms to talk with loved ones. There are organized social outings, group and individual activities like fishing, quilting, and religious services, and there's always gentle encouragement to join in daily exercise and mental activities to stay active. Transportation is available if you need a ride for errands or doctor appointments, and people who drive can use the resident parking on-site. The building is one story, so it's easier to get around, and showers and tubs are wheelchair accessible. Security systems, emergency pendants, and good staff-to-resident ratios make for a safe atmosphere.

BeeHive Homes of Portales is known for its welcoming, home-like environment, compassionate caregivers, and steady focus on helping seniors stay as independent as they're able. The community provides a comfortable place to live, personalized care, and many amenities designed to make life simple and pleasant for seniors and their families.
