    Beautiful veteran home, management issues

I live here and appreciate the beautiful, well-kept, veteran-focused home - large rooms, lots of activities, an in-house bank, affordable craft supplies, and caring caregivers who honor our veterans. However, administration has been a problem for me: long waits to visit, short in-room visits, occasional disrespect and a business-first attitude that can neglect emotional care. Overall I recommend it for veterans because of the facility and staff, but be aware of management issues.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the review summaries is strongly positive about the North Dakota Veterans Home’s physical environment, veteran-centered mission, and the quality of front-line caregiving, while also revealing recurring administrative and visitation concerns. Many reviewers emphasize that the facility is beautiful, well maintained, and clearly focused on honoring veterans. Words and phrases repeated across the summaries include "beautiful facility," "honoring heroes," "home full of heroes," and "veteran-focused," indicating a clear strength in identity and atmosphere. The location, grounds, and newer building construction are frequently praised, as are displays and features that celebrate veterans’ history.

Care quality and staff performance are also prominent positives. Multiple reviewers explicitly call out "amazing, dedicated caregivers," "wonderful staff," and "friendly staff," and several summaries describe the home as treating residents with respect. These comments suggest that day-to-day interactions, direct caregiving, and the personal attention from many employees are strong points. At the same time, there are consistent notes of concern about emotional care — some reviewers mention a perceived lack of emotional or personalized support — and a few point to instances of staff disrespect. This creates a pattern where front-line staff are generally praised, but there are enough negative anecdotes to suggest variability in interpersonal care depending on personnel or situations.

Facilities, activities, and amenities receive robust praise. Reviewers note large rooms, ongoing activities, an in-house bank, affordable stationery and craft items, and "lots of amenities," implying both convenience and opportunities for resident engagement. The presence of history displays and a newer building are specifically mentioned, which supports the impression of a facility that invests in an attractive, veteran-centric environment and in programming that supports residents’ interests and identity. Fair pricing and affordable onsite supplies are also cited, suggesting reasonable cost/value for residents and families.

A distinct and recurring area of concern involves management and administration. Several summaries accuse administration of prioritizing business considerations over resident well-being, and at least one review specifically alleges harassment by an administrator. Phrases such as "poor administration" and "management prioritizes business over residents" indicate that administrative culture and decisions are notable pain points for some residents or family members. This administrative criticism stands in contrast to the generally positive remarks about caregiving staff, suggesting an inconsistency between leadership/management and front-line personnel.

Visitation policies and access also emerge as a negative pattern. Reviewers report long waits to visit, having to use in-room visits, and brief visit durations. These reports may reflect scheduling, policy, or staffing constraints that limit family time with residents. For prospective residents and families, this is an important practical consideration: while the facility’s care and grounds are highly regarded, access for visits can be constrained or administratively cumbersome according to multiple reviewers.

In summary, the North Dakota Veterans Home appears to be a well-maintained, veteran-focused facility with strong amenities, meaningful activities, and many compassionate caregivers. The facility’s atmosphere, grounds, newer building features, and veteran-oriented displays are repeatedly praised, and many reviewers strongly recommend the home. However, there are consistent caveats regarding management and administration — including accusations of prioritizing business interests, reports of harassment by an administrator, and some instances of staff disrespect or insufficient emotional care — as well as practical issues around visitation length and wait times. Prospective residents and families should weigh the clear strengths in facilities, amenities, and many staff members’ commitment against the reported administrative and visitation concerns and consider asking the facility for specifics about visitation policies, staff training, and how administrative complaints are handled before making a placement decision.
