    Wonderful staff, issues with management

I live here and the staff is wonderful - caring, attentive, and helpful - the building is clean, homey, well-kept with bright, spacious apartments, nice grounds and lots of activities. That said, management can be unresponsive, staffing is thin on weekends, and I've seen unresolved issues like a dirty move-in, hot-water outages, medication/communication lapses and renovation chaos. Dining is inconsistent (some say great, others say the worst meals), and the community is expensive with fees and price increases after move-in. Overall I'm happy with the day-to-day care and atmosphere but wary of management, staffing and hidden costs.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: Reviews of Brookdale Englewood are mixed but tilt positive in volume and frequency: many families praise cleanliness, a warm home-like atmosphere, and staff who are attentive, friendly, and compassionate. The community earns repeated recognition for its well-kept grounds, bright and spacious rooms, restaurant-style dining spaces, and a robust schedule of activities and outings. Multiple reviewers explicitly said they would recommend Brookdale Englewood, citing personalized care, good staffing ratios in some areas, and a reassuring, community-oriented feel.

Care quality and staff: Staff receive the most frequent positive mentions — described as caring, respectful, responsive, and knowing residents by name. Many reviewers reported highly personalized attention and smooth assimilation for new residents. However, there is notable variability: some families report excellent nursing and aides, while others describe inconsistent follow-through, instances of neglect, rude behaviors, or gaps in communication. Staffing shortages and high turnover are recurrent concerns and appear to correlate with reports of weekend understaffing, slower management response on weekends, and inconsistent care across shifts. Memory care staff and programming are praised in some reviews (music therapy, locked and secure units, small memory-care halls), but other reviewers reported limited stimulation, residents not being taken outside on nice days, and that the memory care environment sometimes tolerates rather than encourages engagement.

Facilities and living spaces: The physical plant and accommodations are strong assets. Reviews consistently note cleanliness, pleasant interior finishes, well-kept grounds, patios, courtyards, and several apartment-size options including suites with kitchenettes. Social rooms, dining areas, and amenities such as a beauty/barber shop and on-site activities space are commonly cited. Renovations and new-building improvements were positively noted by many, although a subset of reviews mention construction-related disruption and chaos during renovation periods.

Dining and food service: Dining receives mixed but generally positive feedback about the ambience — lovely dining rooms, formal dining options, and pleasant presentation. Several reviewers praised the restaurant-style dining experience and social aspects of meals. However, there are consistent negative notes about food quality variability: some called meals “the worst,” others mentioned problems for residents on modified diets (puréed meals with limited options and little or no dessert), and at least one report cited trays lacking water except at mealtimes. Families with special dietary needs or pureed diets should clarify offerings in detail before moving in.

Activities and engagement: Activity programming is frequently highlighted as a strength — an active schedule of exercise classes, bingo, crafts, outings, and even intergenerational interactions. The social coordinator and activities staff are singled out positively several times. That said, activity availability was affected during quarantine periods for some residents, and a few reviewers felt the memory care unit did not provide sufficient outdoor time or stimulation.

Management, pricing, and transparency: Pricing and administrative practices are a common negative theme. Multiple reviewers reported high community fees, monthly price increases after move-in, and perceived “bait-and-switch” tactics. Some families complained about duplicated or unnecessary billed items and an expensive pet-care add-on. Management responsiveness is uneven in reviewers’ experiences — some directors and managers were praised as kind and helpful, while others were described as unresponsive, especially regarding maintenance problems (e.g., hot water outages) or move-in cleanliness. There are also reports of a top-heavy administrative structure with limited visible upper-level presence, along with community concerns about outreach and allegations of systemic racism in isolated accounts.

Safety, access, and special needs: Security measures (locked Alzheimer’s unit, buzz-in access) and a generally safe environment are reported positively. Memory care is small and intimate in several descriptions, which can be beneficial for many residents; at the same time, a few reviewers caution that Brookdale Englewood may not be suitable for very active dementia patients whose needs exceed the program’s engagement level. Coverage of medication administration and clinical care is generally positive in many accounts (timely meds, attentive care), but there are isolated reports of medication administration issues and nursing lapses that prospective families should investigate.

Patterns and recommendations: The dominant pattern is that Brookdale Englewood offers a clean, attractive, and activity-rich community with many compassionate staff and good amenities — it is especially well-regarded for dining ambience, social programming, and a home-like feel. The primary caveats are variability: care consistency, communication, weekend staffing, pricing transparency, and certain memory-care practices vary between reviewers. Families considering Brookdale Englewood should: (1) verify current staffing levels and weekend/after-hours coverage, (2) get explicit written details about all fees and potential price increases, (3) review culinary options for special diets (puréed/mechanical soft), (4) ask for specifics on memory care daily outings and stimulation, and (5) tour during a weekday and weekend to gauge staffing and activity levels.

Bottom line: For many residents and families Brookdale Englewood provides a warm, clean, and engaging environment with many caring staff and solid amenities. However, inconsistent reports about nursing follow-through, communication, pricing practices, and memory-care engagement suggest careful, specific due diligence before committing. The community has strong positives but also some recurring operational concerns that prospective residents should address directly with management during visits and contract negotiations.

    About Brookdale Englewood

Brookdale Englewood sits on a single-story campus out in the countryside where you can look out on open views and see some nice gardens, and the building was made so it feels more like a home than a big institution, with wide doors and walk-in showers that help people using wheelchairs, and everything is set up so folks can stay independent as long as possible while getting help as needs change over time. There are options for private or companion suites, and they welcome pets by offering pet-friendly rooms, so anyone who wants to bring along a small dog or cat doesn't have to worry, and the suites can be roomy, too. Meals get cooked fresh every day with nutrition and special diets in mind, and if you want, you can stop by the ice cream parlor for a treat or go over to the whirlpool for a relaxing soak because they like giving people little enjoyments that add up, and the dining program serves up choices, including vegetarian options, in a dining room where the staff get to know what folks like and need for their meals. If you need help with bathing, grooming, medication, or getting to appointments, there are friendly and professional staff on the job all day and night, every day of the week, with emergency pull cords right in the rooms and a 24-hour alert system for safety. Memory care is available for people with Alzheimer's or dementia, offering extra safety features and doors to keep folks secure, plus lots of activities meant to fit where someone's at-like music, games, or simple chats-to keep the mind going as best as possible, and there are individualized plans in place so care fits each resident's needs. For those looking for some fun or company, the community arranges social, educational, and recreational activities and has both quiet spots and group games, as well as on-site beauty and barber services, Wi-Fi, and spots for family visits, since having friends and visitors matters. There's the option to get help with laundry, housekeeping, and even dry-cleaning, and if you need to get to the store or a medical appointment, transportation is available, sometimes complimentary. People can join in spiritual or devotional gatherings, both on campus and off, and respite care is also there for families who might need a short-term stay or some extra help. Brookdale Englewood provides independent living, assisted living, memory care, continuing care, skilled nursing, and even hospice options if needed, and services adjust as care requirements change, so residents can "age in place" without moving around. The goal is to help everyone live life comfortably, with attention tailored to each person, whether through medication management, dressing, or just that small sense of home, and with a staff that does its best to treat everyone kindly and with respect in an easygoing, supportive environment.
