    Friendly, clean memory care; pricey

My mom loves it here. The staff are incredibly friendly, caring, and communicative - nurses and admissions (Carol, Tina) went above and beyond and really made the transition to their memory-care unit smooth. The place is clean, home-like and well-maintained with bright common areas, a sunroom/porch, kitchenette in units, private baths with showers, lots of activities and very good food. Downsides: it's pricey, some rooms are small, and we saw occasional scheduling/staffing and management hiccups (and a few safety/visitor-policy concerns). Overall I'm very satisfied and would recommend it if the cost fits your budget.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The reviews for Brookdale Troy are strongly positive, with a consistent emphasis on personalized, compassionate care in a small, home-like setting. Multiple reviewers repeatedly praise the staff as friendly, attentive, and caring — from admissions through nursing and activities — and many families report feeling well-informed and supported. The community is frequently described as clean, bright, and welcoming rather than institutional, and reviewers commonly note that residents appear happy, active, and well-cared-for.

Care quality and staff: Care quality emerges as one of the facility's strongest attributes. Reviewers call out "extraordinary nurses," staff who go "above and beyond," and teams who supported families during end-of-life care. Specific admissions staff members were named and praised for being attentive and helpful, which suggests consistent strengths in intake and family communication. The activities director and programming are also noted as energetic and engaging. A few reviews do raise concerns about staff-related issues: isolated reports mention staff hearing difficulties, use of temporary/agency staff, complaints about employee pay or management behavior, and one particularly negative account about a scheduler who belittled staff. These appear to be minority experiences but are noteworthy because they relate to staffing stability and management practices.

Facilities and layout: The physical plant is generally well-regarded. Reviewers describe Brookdale Troy as a small, 35-bed single-story circular facility with clean hallways, rails for safety, staged model rooms, a welcoming lobby, and well-kept grounds. Common spaces such as a sunroom, courtyard, porch, and kitchen areas in some apartments receive frequent praise. Multiple families emphasize that the environment is not "hospital-like" and instead feels homey. Memory care is conveniently located under the same roof (Clare Bridge specialty), and transition options for higher care needs are highlighted as a benefit.

Rooms and accessibility: Room size and layout receive mixed feedback. While several reviewers say one-bedroom units and larger rooms are adequate and comfortable, multiple comments note that studios are small and can feel cramped. Rooms often include kitchenettes (microwave, refrigerator, sink) and private bathrooms with showers rather than tubs in many units. The single-story layout and hall rails aid mobility and walking. However, there are specific accessibility and safety concerns flagged by reviewers: reports of "wanderer" doors being locked from the outside, a push-button accessibility issue for a visitor's parent, and at least one allegation of a visitation policy breach. These are less frequent but important for family members to confirm during a tour.

Activities and social life: Brookdale Troy scores extremely well for activities and community engagement. Reviewers repeatedly highlight a full daily activities calendar, a wide range of programs (bingo, drumming, gardening, bread making, baby-doll nursery, Wii, puzzles, exercise classes), bus trips, parties, and holiday events. Families note that the activities keep residents mentally and socially engaged and that staff frequently participate in residents' hobbies. The active programming is cited as a key reason residents are happier and more engaged after moving in.

Dining: Dining impressions are generally favorable but not unanimous. Many reviews praise the food — some even say the meals are better than what family members eat at home — while a smaller number describe meals as bland or merely acceptable. The dining room environment itself is described as clean and inviting. Several reviews mention menu planning meetings, which suggests resident input into meals.

Management, communication, and cost: Communication and transparency with families are praised in many accounts, with reviewers noting informative admissions staff and good communication across staffing levels. Conversely, there are scattered but substantive concerns about management and policies: one or more reviewers reported chaotic scheduling practices and a problematic scheduler; others mentioned poor handling of employee relations or policy violations. Cost is another recurring theme — multiple reviewers identify Brookdale Troy as expensive, note an upfront cash requirement, or express budget concerns. Availability at needed times was also mentioned as an occasional limitation.

Notable patterns and final assessment: Patterns across the reviews indicate a facility that excels in resident engagement, cleanliness, and compassionate caregiving, providing a strong sense of community and day-to-day quality of life. The connection to an on-site memory care program is a practical advantage for families anticipating changing needs. The most significant issues to weigh are smaller studio sizes, outlier reports of management/scheduling problems, occasional accessibility or safety concerns, and cost/financial requirements. Prospective families should be encouraged by the high frequency of positive experiences but should also verify specific concerns during a visit: confirm the condition and size of the particular unit offered, ask about staffing continuity and scheduler practices, review safety protocols (including door locks and visitor policies), and clarify costs and payment terms. Overall, Brookdale Troy appears to be a well-regarded, small community with many strengths in staff quality, activities, and a homelike atmosphere, while a few operational and financial concerns warrant direct follow-up during tours and decision-making.

Memory care is also a key part of what they do, with supportive therapies and gentle environments for residents living with Alzheimer's or other kinds of dementia.
