    Good short-term, problematic long-term care

I had a mostly positive experience - friendly, caring staff and residents, very good food, clean/homey grounds, plenty of activities, pet-friendly, responsive maintenance, and solid short-term rehab/transportation. That said, I saw recurring understaffing (especially weekends), inconsistent medical/nursing attention, spotty communication, billing/accounting headaches and management focused on money; it's fine for independent living or short rehab stays but I would be cautious about long-term or memory-care needs.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment about Brookdale Westlake Village is mixed but leans positive in many areas: numerous reviewers praise the staff for being friendly, caring and personable, creating a warm, home-like atmosphere that helps many residents feel comfortable and socially engaged. Dining receives frequent positive mentions — many reviewers describe the food as very good with multiple daily choices, and several people singled out the meals and menu variety as a definite strength. The community is also commended for active programming and events (with a notably strong Activities Director in several accounts), plenty of social opportunities, transportation to appointments and shopping, and an accessible layout that includes covered terraces, automatic doors, and few stairs. On-site services (beautician, podiatrist, visiting physicians) and an available rehab/skilled nursing program are repeatedly noted as helpful conveniences, and many reviewers specifically recommend the community for independent living or short-term rehab stays.

However, an important and recurrent theme in the reviews is inconsistent care quality tied to staffing challenges. Multiple reviewers describe understaffing, frequent use of agency or temporary aides, and variability in staff training and competence. Serious safety-related complaints appear in a subset of reviews: long call-response times, reports of removed call buttons, residents left unattended during staff breaks, soiled linens and laundry problems, bedsores that required medical attention, and a general sense that fall risk and memory-care needs are not being adequately mitigated. These are not isolated minor inconveniences but rather significant incidents that led some families to feel that medical attention and supervision were 'almost zero' at times or required bringing in private caregivers. Weekend and overnight coverage inconsistencies and allegations of unlicensed or inadequately trained aides exacerbate these concerns.

Feedback about management and operations is mixed. While many reviewers describe helpful, compassionate front-line staff and responsive maintenance teams, other reviews call out broken promises, billing/accounting problems, and poor communication from management. Renovation activity and construction were mentioned as disruptive in a few accounts, and some reviewers noted dated areas that need TLC. Housekeeping and laundry were generally seen as adequate by many reviewers, but some reported infrequent apartment cleaning, dirty restrooms or ADL equipment, and laundry machines or services that were out of order, which contributed to negative impressions for those families.

Regarding clinical services and care continuum, the community's rehab and skilled nursing services receive praise from several reviewers for thorough and engaging therapy staff and good short-term rehab outcomes. Yet there are also comments that rehab sessions can be limited in number or inconsistent depending on staffing. Memory care drew specific concern: multiple reviewers indicated the facility is not well-equipped to manage dementia or memory-related behaviors, recommending against Brookdale Westlake Village for residents with significant cognitive impairment. In some cases, reviews cite the need for outside private care to supplement what the facility provides clinically. A few medical lapse examples are noted in reviews (e.g., antibiotics not provided at discharge in one report), and while such reports are not universal, they underline the variability in medical attention families experienced.

The physical environment and lifestyle offerings are frequent positives. Many residents and families describe bright, attractive common areas, covered outdoor terraces, pet-friendly policies, good maintenance of grounds, and apartments that range from adequate to upscale hotel-like. Accessibility features and social spaces (small cafes, a pub room, lots of activities) support an engaged lifestyle, particularly in independent living. Cost is a recurring caveat: some reviewers felt pricing was high compared with alternatives, though several still judged it a good value given the staff and services they experienced.

In summary, Brookdale Westlake Village garners strong praise for its compassionate staff, community atmosphere, dining, activities, and on-site rehab/medical amenities. These strengths lead many residents and families to recommend the community and report satisfaction with move-in, social engagement, and day-to-day life. At the same time, a substantial minority of reviews raise serious concerns about staffing consistency, responsiveness to calls, safety and clinical oversight (particularly for residents with dementia or higher medical needs), and occasional operational problems (laundry, housekeeping, billing). Prospective residents and families should weigh the highly positive accounts of social life, food and staff warmth against reports of variable clinical reliability and management issues; a thorough in-person tour, specific questions about overnight/weekend staffing, call-response protocols, dementia-care capabilities, recent staffing patterns, and written guarantees around services and billing will help clarify how well the community currently meets an individual resident's needs.
