    Caring staff and amenities; mixed

I've had a very positive experience here - small, clean, family-feeling home with highly competent, caring and friendly staff, thorough administration/nursing, good doctor communication, active weekly programming/outings, a therapy dog, game room and sensible safety features. Residents are treated with dignity, food and housekeeping were generally good, and I would strongly recommend it and would choose to live here when older. That said, a close friend had a very poor experience (unfriendly/incompetent nursing and reception, poor communication about illness/injury, unresolved hearing-aid issue and limited food alternatives), so I'd advise touring and asking specific questions.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is predominantly positive, with multiple reviewers describing Hillside Assisted Living as a small, well-maintained, family-feeling facility where residents receive caring and competent attention. Several reports highlight strong aspects of daily life at Hillside: active programming and regular outings, weekly activities, a therapy dog, a game room, safety features like ramps, and a designated safe smoking area. Many reviewers explicitly praised staff as caring, attentive, and highly competent, and called out thoroughness from the administrator and nursing leadership along with good communication with physicians. A number of reviewers used strong endorsements, stating the facility is well run, residents are treated great, and expressing that they would recommend Hillside or even choose it for themselves in the future.

Care quality and staff behavior emerge as central themes with mostly favorable accounts but some notable exceptions. Positive comments emphasize quality care, respect for resident dignity, and staff who are understanding toward residents and families. Reviewers appreciated that staff foster a family atmosphere and provide individualized attention. At the same time, at least one review described extremely incompetent staff and unfriendly behavior from nursing staff and receptionists. There is also an allegation that a nurse who appears respectful in person might be mistreating residents behind the scenes. These conflicting accounts point to inconsistency in staff performance or differences tied to shifts, individual employees, or isolated incidents rather than a uniform pattern described by all reviewers.

Facility and environment feedback is largely favorable. Multiple reviewers described the building as small, clean, and well-maintained, with useful safety features and pleasant communal areas. The presence of a therapy dog, game room, and active outings were cited as strong positives that support resident socialization and programming. However, one reviewer qualified the cleanliness comment by saying the facility was "clean on the surface," suggesting potential variability in depth of cleaning or attention to less visible areas. This indicates cleanliness is generally acceptable but may warrant closer oversight to ensure standards are consistently met.

Dining received mixed feedback and represents a clear area of inconsistency across reviews. Several reviewers praised the food as delicious and fitting the family-home atmosphere, while at least one reviewer explicitly criticized the food quality and noted a lack of alternative meal choices. This split suggests that meal quality may vary over time, between dining staff, or according to individual taste and dietary needs. For prospective families, clarifying menu variety and accommodations for special diets would be prudent.

Communication and administrative follow-through are also mixed topics. On the positive side, one reviewer praised the administrator and nurse for being thorough and noted good physician communication. Conversely, another reviewer reported not being informed promptly about a resident's illness and an injury, and mentioned a hearing aid that was not replaced. These examples highlight lapses in incident notification and follow-up on personal care items, pointing to an opportunity to standardize communication protocols and administrative tracking to ensure families are kept promptly informed and requests are completed reliably.

In summary, Hillside Assisted Living receives strong praise for its small, home-like environment, active programming, and many compassionate, competent staff members. The facility's strengths include social activities, safety features, and a family atmosphere that many families find reassuring. That said, there are isolated but significant concerns around staff consistency, communication about medical issues or incidents, meal variety and quality for some residents, and at least one claim of superficial cleanliness and possible hidden mistreatment. These mixed signals suggest that while the overall experience is positive for many residents and families, prospective residents should still tour the facility, meet key staff members, ask about incident reporting and communication policies, inquire about menu options and dietary accommodations, and seek references or recent family feedback to confirm consistent standards of care.

    About Hillside Assisted Living

Hillside Assisted Living, sometimes called Hillside Care Center or Hillside Retirement Home, sits in Xenia, OH and serves Greene County with a medium-sized place that offers a bit of everything for seniors needing support, whether that's for daily living, memory care, or Alzheimer's care, so you'll find that they give individual care plans and use some unique names for their programs, which are specialized for each resident depending on what kind of help someone needs, and they have 35 assisted living units in a building set up so folks have choices like semi-private rooms, studio apartments, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, or even suites with kitchenettes, and singles or couples can each have a space that feels suited to them, with the option to add personal touches to a room, like favorite photos or things from home, which makes it feel warmer and kept-up. Every room gets cable TV, Wi-Fi, and a telephone, and there's an easy-to-use urgent call button in each one in case someone needs help day or night.

The building has three separate common rooms, a rec room for games, arts, and quieter hangouts, plus outdoor and indoor spaces for walking or gardening, so it's good for socializing or just spending time outside, and there's a beauty and barber shop right inside for haircuts or a bit of pampering. Residents can bring along their pets if they want, and there's all-day snacks, three chef-prepared meals daily, and menus that account for things like diabetes, food allergies, and different dietary needs, so everyone gets decent, healthy food, and nobody needs to cook or worry about groceries. The staff, known for being helpful and friendly, are always around to help out with things like bathing, dressing, getting to the dining room, or managing medications-whatever is needed, including transfers for folks who use wheelchairs, incontinence support, diabetic care, and health monitoring, so everything's covered from simple to complex.

Hillside has a clean, safe building with wheelchair accessible showers and wide pathways, so it's easy to get around, and there's available transportation to the doctor, shopping, or even off-site devotional services, which makes staying active and connected to the world a bit easier. There's a weight management area, a fitness section for those who want to move a little, and weekly scheduled activities alongside resident-run clubs and movie nights, so there's a good mix of things to do, and for anyone who likes to keep busy, there are education programs and games too. Housekeeping, laundry, linen service, pharmacy help, and trash removal are in the mix, so day-to-day chores are off residents' lists. The community's staff provides 24-hour supervision and is there to help in emergencies, and for anyone needing respite or hospice care, those services are available as well.
