    Caring staff, unsafe and bare

I like the caring staff, high-quality care and mental-health support, plus conveniences like free Wi-Fi/cable, transport to specialty apartments, free payee services, volunteer-run activities, group outings and a fantastic game room. But the independent-living units are bare-private rooms with no kitchenette, no in-room phone or TV, no exercise equipment or classes, and dieting-style meals heavy on processed meats. Many advertised activities never happen, bathing is limited to two community showers and a tiny shared 2.5×4 bath with jets, and doors lack push/turn locks-a serious safety concern; I wouldn't send my loved ones here.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews is mixed but leans toward concern despite multiple clearly positive elements. Several reviewers praise the staff and the level of care — descriptions like "caring staff" and "high care quality" were recurring and suggest that direct caregiving and clinical support are strengths of Angelhaus Huron. The community appears to offer a range of supportive services such as free payee assistance, transportation to specialty apartments, and mental health care support, which are important for residents with complex needs. Volunteer involvement and specialized programming such as Peyton art expression are also noted positively, indicating community engagement beyond basic services.

Amenities receive similarly mixed commentary. On the positive side, the facility offers many on-site amenities: free Wi-Fi and cable, group outings, multicultural activities, and a well-equipped game room that includes basketball, foosball, air hockey, and a PlayStation 5. These features suggest an environment geared toward social interaction and recreational variety. Independent living arrangements and private rooms are mentioned as advantages, and transportation to other housing options is available, which may appeal to residents seeking flexibility.

However, several practical and safety concerns arise in the reviews. Multiple reviewers point out that rooms lack kitchenettes, in-room phones, and TVs. There is also an absence of exercise equipment and formal exercise classes, which could be a drawback for residents who value on-site fitness options. Dining is another clear area of dissatisfaction: meals are described as "dieting-style" and relying on processed meats, which raises questions about nutrition and meal appeal. A commonly reported operational problem is that many planned activities do not actually take place, undermining the benefit of the advertised programming.

Privacy and physical facility issues appear to be significant pain points. Although private rooms are advertised and mentioned positively, reviewers also report limited bathing facilities — only two community showers and a small shared bath (2.5 x 4 feet) with jets — creating a potential mismatch between "private room" expectations and shared bathroom realities. Security concerns are also highlighted: at least one review specifically notes the absence of a push/turn lock on a door, which could be important for resident safety and privacy. These items, combined with comments urging others not to send loved ones there and even a "zero stars" statement, point to deep dissatisfaction for some families and could reflect either isolated incidents or systemic issues.

In summary, Angelhaus Huron appears to deliver strong personal care and has a number of attractive amenities and supportive services. At the same time, reviews raise substantive concerns about day-to-day living conditions: limited in-room amenities, subpar dining, inconsistent activity execution, shared bathing facilities, and at least one reported security issue. There is a notable contrast between positive reports about staff and programming and negative reports about facilities, meals, and operational follow-through. Prospective residents and families should weigh the caregiving strengths against the practical and safety concerns, tour the facility in person to verify room and bathroom arrangements and locks, inspect dining options, and ask for an activity calendar with evidence of follow-through before making a placement decision.

    About Angelhaus Huron

Angelhaus Huron sits at 50 7th Street SE in Huron, South Dakota, where it serves forty-four residents across private rooms and furnished apartments with cable and free Wi-Fi, giving people a spot to watch TV or keep in touch while calling this place home, and there's a good amount of daylight coming through the windows too. The building's fully licensed for assisted living by the state, and it's also categorized as an outpatient mental health and substance abuse center, which is a different sort of thing compared to most senior homes, since it brings psychiatric technicians along with a whole group of caring staff and a Registered Nurse who leads the team around the clock. Folks here get access to memory care, behavioral health services, and specialized programs for those needing extra support, and if someone struggles with daily activities like bathing or dressing, the staff steps in to help, making things feel less overwhelming.

Residents have access to medication management with staff ensuring correct doses at the right times, and there's tight coordination with healthcare providers, plus transportation set up for medical appointments, whether that's a trip to a clinic or hospital, which makes keeping doctor's appointments a little easier. The dining room serves nutritious meals that are made on-site, snacks come out regularly, and there's always an effort to work with dietary needs, including specific diets for seniors with diabetes or special food rules, and for the cleaning side, housekeeping and laundry services keep things tidy without fuss. Folks take part in the mental wellness program and are encouraged to join daily activities or community events-there's movie night, resident-run gatherings, and art projects in a space called Peyton, which is its own little corner for creativity. The game room offers basketball hoops, foosball, air hockey, and even a Playstation 5 for some variety, which younger visitors seem to enjoy.

The outdoors at Angelhaus Huron's got maintained walking paths, a tranquil garden, and plenty of places to sit, watch the birds, or just take in the air, and when the hair starts to feel a bit shaggy there's a barber and salon to help people feel presentable. Supervision's provided all day and night, with a 24-hour call system in place for emergencies, and the facility's designed for people who want a mix of independence and support, including those with memory challenges, and even those of the younger crowd with behavioral needs, though pets aren't allowed. The community isn't able to accept Medicare unless certified, but Medicaid is accepted, with in-house help to explain insurance and handle financial paperwork, including a complimentary Payee Service, which means bills and budgets are managed for you.

Angelhaus Huron partners with Community Counseling Services and stays involved with other area hospitals and clinics, as well as having a Registered Dietitian Consultant available. People can choose long-term stays, and families can take a tour in person or virtually, with a staff guide ready to show things around and answer questions. There's a useful online FAQ library for topics like payment, visiting hours, and what staff provide, and the community offers adaptable plans to suit each resident. Beautiful gardens, community showers with jet baths for comfort, and private rooms all help create a familiar, family-like environment. Everything here is shaped around supporting seniors and those needing mental health or memory care, offering a calm and safe place to spend every day.
