    About Autistic Treatment Center

The Autism Treatment Center (ATC) is dedicated to supporting individuals with autism and related disorders at every stage of life, fostering growth as they learn, play, work, and integrate into their communities. Since its founding in 1978, ATC has established itself as a cornerstone for autism services in San Antonio. Central to its philosophy is the use of evidence-based techniques such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Therapy, which utilizes positive reinforcement to effectively enhance communication, attention, social skills, academic performance, and independence. Following a comprehensive evaluation, a uniquely tailored plan is designed for each student, focusing on both immediate goals and long-term developmental milestones.

ATC offers a TEA-accredited nonpublic school that provides a year-round educational environment for students with autism, ages 3 to 22. The classrooms emphasize small student-to-teacher ratios, allowing for individualized attention and instruction that is adapted to each student’s specific needs and educational objectives. Utilizing advanced technology—including interactive smart boards and iPads—the center enriches the learning experience and accommodates a variety of learning styles. Beyond core academics, the educational services expand to include vocational opportunities, such as Culinary, Snack Shop, Art, and Horticulture, to cultivate practical skills and creative expression.

Speech Therapy services are a vital part of the center’s offerings, with therapists assessing and addressing each child's strengths and areas for growth in communication and eating. Individualized programs work on aspects like sound production, comprehension, socially appropriate language usage, and voluntary movements to facilitate speech, as well as guiding texture progression for eating a variety of foods. Occupational Therapy further supports independence by helping children build skills necessary for daily life, ranging from physical coordination and self-care to finer motor skills such as writing and tying shoes.

Beyond their educational and therapeutic programs, the Autism Treatment Center also owns and operates single-family and duplex group homes. Each resident is thoughtfully matched with staff and fellow residents whose abilities, interests, and needs complement their own, creating a supportive and harmonious living environment. Staff members serve as caregivers, educators, and companions, striving to foster both independence and community integration. Daily routines include learning to contribute to household chores, practicing personal grooming, and enjoying leisure or community-based activities. Outings to local grocery stores, parks, malls, restaurants, and recreational spots like swimming pools or bike trails are incorporated regularly to encourage social skill development and wellness.

Community involvement and volunteerism are integral to ATC’s mission. Volunteers are welcomed throughout the year to assist with a variety of tasks—from painting rooms and gardening to supporting special events. These contributions have a meaningful impact on the lives of both children and adults at the center, enhancing the supportive and inclusive environment that ATC continually strives to provide.
