    Friendly staff, clean, active community

I'm pleased with the incredibly friendly, long-tenured staff and the clean, well-kept grounds. My apartment is comfortable (sizes vary), and the place offers excellent amenities and activities - gym, indoor pool/hot tub, PT, salon, classes, movie nights, bingo and outings - while dining is tasty but often has extra charges. It's a beautiful, active community that gives me peace of mind, though buy-in/pricing can be steep.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews is strongly positive, with the greatest strengths centered on staff quality, rehabilitation services, and an extensive set of amenities and activities. Multiple reviewers describe the staff as friendly, professional and, in many cases, outstanding; several specifically compliment therapists and rehabilitation teams for being knowledgeable, caring and effective (with at least one mention of demonstrable improvement after therapy). Long‑tenured employees (some noted to have served 20–30 years) contribute to continuity of care and resident satisfaction, and many reviewers explicitly state they feel comfortable, content and at peace living at the community.

The physical campus and recreational offerings are frequent highlights. Reviewers consistently praise landscaped grounds, walking paths and outdoor spaces, and note a broad array of on‑site amenities: gym, indoor pool and hot tub, a physical therapy room, hair salon, activity rooms, a bank and even a dog park. Social programming is robust — bridge, chess, cards, painting, crafts, Tai chi, water exercises, bingo and movie nights were all cited — and organized trips and transportation to appointments and off‑site dining add to resident mobility and lifestyle variety. The presence of memory care and a nursing/rehab facility on the same property is an important plus for families seeking a continuum of care.

Dining impressions are mostly favorable but nuanced. Several reviews praise the food and compliment the chef, with some calling the food outstanding and noting improvements over time. The community offers multiple dining venues (including named locations like Cochran's and the Sky Lounge), formal dining events and off‑site dining opportunities. At the same time, reviewers repeatedly mention extra charges tied to meal plans or limited food allowances that can lead to additional costs, so meal pricing and what is included warrants closer review by prospective residents.

Cost and residence size emerge as consistent concerns. Multiple reviewers describe the community as expensive relative to alternatives, mentioning buy‑in requirements and pricing that may be out of budget for some. Apartment size is a recurring issue — some units are described as small (one reviewer cited a 500 sq ft apartment) and some apartments appear older or in need of updating, though other reviewers note spacious or remodeled units. Renovations are reportedly ongoing in parts of the property, which may be positive long term but could mean short‑term disruption.

There are a few mixed or cautionary notes about management and policy. While many reviews emphasize excellent staff and continuity, a small number report communication problems with staff or management. Pet policy references are inconsistent: some reviews mention a dog park and pet‑friendly outdoor space, while others state that pets are not allowed, so the exact policy should be confirmed. Overall, the most common practical caveats are cost, apartment size/age, extra meal charges and intermittent renovations.

In summary, Blue Skies of Texas East is portrayed as a well‑staffed, amenity‑rich community that offers strong rehabilitation services, a lively social calendar and an attractive campus. It is especially well suited for prospective residents who value active programming, on‑site medical/rehab resources, and a variety of conveniences (salon, bank, transportation). Prospective residents and families should, however, scrutinize financial terms (buy‑in and recurring fees), meal‑plan inclusions and pet policies, tour specific apartment units to check size and condition, and ask about the status and timing of ongoing renovations and any reported communication issues before committing.

About Blue Skies of Texas East

Blue Skies of Texas East is a non-profit senior living community in San Antonio, Texas, with a history going back over 50 years, first known as Air Force Village, and now open to seniors from all backgrounds, whether they served in the military or not. The community stays open 24 hours a day and focuses on independent living but has care if needs change, since it offers assisted living, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, memory care, home care, palliative, and hospice services, so residents can get more help if their health changes over time. The East Campus sits on about 50 acres and includes private apartments in various layouts, such as Hi-Rise studios, one- and two-bedroom apartments, Mid-Rise residences, cottages with patios, Garden homes with vaulted ceilings and gas fireplaces, Lakes homes with open living spaces and attached garages, Oaks homes with multiple bedrooms and great rooms, and luxury Hills condominium-style homes with private decks and gourmet kitchens, and most have modern features like stainless steel appliances and granite countertops. People live in a friendly, active community with a variety of features-scenic walking trails, a dog park for pets to run and meet, community gardens for growing or sharing harvests, and green spaces for outdoor activities like gardening or joining the bike club. There's a Vitality Fitness Center with a pool, hot tub, dance studio, exercise equipment, and fitness classes and the Sky Lounge Penthouse Restaurant and Bar gives folks a place to relax with panoramic views. Residents can also visit Cochran's Café for casual dining, stop at the elegant dining room, or use the beauty shop, barbershop, or library. Social programs fill the calendar, with more than 70 activity groups covering hobbies, music, gardening, fitness, movie theater nights, billiards, art studio classes, and outdoor adventures, and privacy and independence get respect throughout it all.

Blue Skies of Texas East supports seniors at different stages, offering independent living for those who want a hassle-free and social environment, memory care for those facing Alzheimer's or dementia with therapies to help reduce confusion and wandering, and Arnold House assisted living on-site for residents who might need daily help with bathing, dressing, or medication, while staff provide personalized care and safety checks with the support of 24/7 monitoring and gated access. Their skilled nursing and rehab staff are always on hand for longer-term or short-term stays, and they provide hospice and palliative care with a focus on comfort. Staff and aides also help seniors living at home with companionship and extra non-medical support through home care programs, and on both East and West campuses, there's a dedicated concierge desk available at all hours.

Residents and staff work together, running a community thrift store for extra support, tending the community garden, and joining in on volunteer projects, so the place feels much like a small town. The campus has its own woodshop, computer lab, group exercise sessions, and even electric vehicle charging stations. There's a six-month satisfaction guarantee with a full refund of the entrance fee if a new resident isn't completely happy, and a charitable foundation is in place if someone needs financial help, especially widowed residents. Blue Skies is proud to be a Best of Senior Living community, recognized for care and support as a life plan community, which means future health care is assured for residents. Over the years, the community's honored for excellence, innovation, and service, and military service is respected, though not needed. The website for more information is blueskiesoftexas.org.
