    Clean home-like, caring staff, inconsistent

I had a mixed experience. The building is very clean and often feels home-like, and many nurses and aides were attentive, caring, communicative, and made my loved one feel valued. However I also saw troubling issues - inconsistent/at times disrespectful staff behavior, medication changes without consent, missed appointments, poor food and occasional strong odors - so I can't fully recommend it.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the provided review summaries is mixed but leans positive: a plurality of reviewers emphasize an attentive, compassionate staff, strong rehabilitation outcomes, and a clean, home-like facility where residents are treated with dignity and respect. Many comments repeatedly highlight kind nurses and floor staff who make residents feel valued and like family, as well as staff who are responsive, communicative, and willing to listen. The clinical team, activities staff, and specific employees (notably someone named Heather) receive multiple explicit praises, which suggests consistent strengths in staff engagement, rehab programming, and daily activity offerings.

Care quality and staff behavior are the dominant themes with contrasting reports. On the positive side, numerous summaries describe excellent hands-on care, effective rehabilitation, and a clinical team that is attentive and communicative. These accounts describe residents feeling cared for, staff answering questions, and family members experiencing a sense of partnership. On the negative side, several reviews raise serious concerns about disrespectful or even abusive staff behavior, reports that care quality can deteriorate after an initially positive impression, and allegations that the facility or certain staff behave in a money-driven manner. These adverse reports describe situations where staff were reportedly abusive or dismissive, which directly conflicts with the many positive testimonies and points to inconsistency in staff performance or supervision.

Clinical practices and administrative issues also show a split. Positive comments note that the clinical team listens and is on top of medications and care needs. However, a number of negative summaries allege medication changes without consent, missed medical appointments, and even false claims about care provided. Additionally, references to state fines or regulatory citations appear in the negative summaries. Taken together, these reports merit attention because they imply potential lapses in documentation, consent procedures, scheduling/coordination of medical services, and regulatory compliance. Even if only a minority of reviewers report these problems, the nature of the allegations (consent and regulatory issues) are significant and should be investigated by prospective families.

Facility condition and amenities are mostly praised, with many reviewers describing the center as very clean and home-like. Conversely, a few reviewers reported a strong odor, which could indicate episodic sanitation or ventilation problems rather than a pervasive condition, given the larger number of cleanliness compliments. Dining and food quality present another mixed theme: some reviewers say the facility is excellent overall, while a handful explicitly criticize poor food. Activities are frequently cited as a positive, with staff interaction during activities contributing to a family-like atmosphere.

Patterns and takeaways: the strongest and most consistent positives are compassionate direct-care staff, successful rehabilitation experiences, cleanliness, and good communication from many team members. The most serious and recurring negatives are inconsistent staff behavior (ranging from disrespectful to alleged abuse), clinical/administrative concerns around medications and missed appointments, and reports of regulatory issues. These contrasting themes suggest variability in resident experience that may be influenced by shift-to-shift staffing, specific teams or managers on duty, or isolated incidents that affect perception.

If evaluating New Martinsville Health & Rehabilitation, the review set suggests focusing discussions on areas that produced negative reports: ask about medication consent policies and documentation, frequency of missed appointments and how those are addressed, any recent state inspection reports or fines and their resolutions, staff training and turnover, and food service menus. At the same time, observe staff-resident interactions during a tour to verify the commonly reported strengths (cleanliness, caring staff, rehab services, and activities). The facility appears capable of providing very good, compassionate care for many residents, but prospective residents and families should be mindful of the inconsistent negative reports and perform due diligence to ensure their expectations and needs will be met.

About New Martinsville Health & Rehabilitation

New Martinsville Health & Rehabilitation sits at 225 Russell Avenue in New Martinsville, WV and runs as part of Hill Valley Healthcare, working with a staff size somewhere between 51 and 200 employees, and you can find out more about them at NewMartinsvilleHR.com if that's of interest. This senior living community acts as both a nursing home and a residential care facility, offering different levels of care like skilled nursing, assisted living, dementia care, and rehabilitation, plus services like hospice and respite care for folks who need a break from their regular caregivers. They provide help with daily living tasks, manage medications, prepare meals, and make sure personal care needs don't get overlooked. They say their People First philosophy guides them and they're always aiming for quality care. They have a state-of-the-art rehab gym for advanced treatment, a well-stocked library for quiet reading, and outdoor spaces like a patio garden and a recreation area for fresh air, all designed so residents don't feel shut in. There's also a beauty and barber shop on site, transportation for medical appointments or small outings, and even spiritual support if that's important to someone.

Ashley Wensyel serves as administrator, and the facility holds certifications for Medicare, Medicaid, and Private Pay, with approval as a nursing home (NH) with dual SNF/NF certification, while having 100 licensed and certified beds and caring for about 92 residents on any given day. Staff provide skilled nursing 24/7, with a nursing staff rate at about 3.11 hours per resident daily, although they've got a nurse turnover rate of 34.2%, which stands out a bit, and they've dealt with a fair share of staff changes. Their care team offers wound care, orthopedic rehab, post-surgical help, pulmonary and bariatric care, cancer care, tracheostomy support, and therapies including speech, physical, and occupational therapy.

The facility's recognized for dementia care expertise but also has a track record that folks might want to know about-reports show they've had 55 total health deficiencies during inspections, including 3 related to infection control, and they've been cited for things like failures in food service and infection prevention, plus more serious concerns like protecting residents from abuse and neglect. They're labeled a Special Focus Facility Candidate, so government agencies watch them closely for past quality issues, though they haven't been formally flagged.

New Martinsville Health & Rehabilitation keeps its doors open to seniors needing short- or long-term care for physical or memory challenges, with a goal of helping each person reach their recovery potential in a comfortable, residential setting, and their staff are focused on both physical and emotional well-being, but inspection reports and government oversight suggest it's important for families to keep an eye on quality for peace of mind.
