Burkwood Treatment Center sits on a quiet, rustic three-acre campus near Willow River State Park in Hudson, Wisconsin, about 30 minutes from Minneapolis, and this peaceful wilderness setting helps adults 18 and older focus on recovery from addiction and co-occurring mental health issues. The center holds up to 35 people at a time and follows a residential treatment model with a typical stay of 42 days, with care from nurses, dietitians, psychiatrists, licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselors, and other staff who help with personalized treatment plans. Burkwood offers group and individual therapy, family programs, continuing care, and a mix of services for both men and women, including addiction education and peer recovery support, group support, and activities like yoga, recreational therapy, and structured daily schedules balanced with breaks.
Burkwood treats substance use disorders like alcoholism and drug addictions-including opioids, stimulants, marijuana, prescription drugs, inhalants, and painkillers-and also addresses behavioral addictions such as gambling, food, internet, , activity, social media, video games, , and work. The center supports recovery for those living with ADHD, ADD, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, PTSD, and autism spectrum disorders, and helps with grief, family conflict, and trauma, all with trauma-informed care and specialized LGBTQ+ providers on the team. Some services start within a week, including opioid treatment programs and care for co-occurring disorders.
The center combines the 12-step model, especially the Making Alcoholics Anonymous Easier (MAAEZ) program, with evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, and uses individualized counseling, didactic and process groups, manualized cognitive interventions, and plenty of group support. Burkwood also handles detox, nicotine addiction services, naloxone distribution, and has a veteran's program, as well as outpatient care and housing support. Family therapy is offered, and the center makes sure clients get a blend of care that matches their unique needs, building a strong plan for living sober both on campus and after discharge, either through intensive outpatient programs or continuing care. The small number of clients to staff means more attention for each person, aiming for both safety and dignity while supporting long-term change. Burkwood emphasizes honest relationships, personal responsibility, and creating a foundation for lifelong recovery out among the woods, with help from Veterans Affairs programs, regular group activities, holistic resources like meditation through the Way of Life system, and transportation support for clients who need it. CARF International accredits Burkwood, which is owned by CRC Wisconsin RD, LLC, dba Burkwood Treatment Center and also runs the Willow House program in the same area. With over 25 years helping adults work toward sobriety, Burkwood focuses on accessible, balanced whole-person treatment in a place where people can breathe easy, surrounded by nature.
