    Caring staff family-like community recommended

I moved my parent to Woodland Hill and I'm very pleased - the staff are caring, attentive and professional, and the community feels warm and family-like. The new, clean building is beautiful with scenic outdoor spaces, spacious apartments (full kitchen, in-unit washer/dryer), great on-site dining (Caribou Bistro), abundant activities and outings, and extensive amenities like a theater, salon and chapel - a well-run, social place that I'd recommend.

    Summary of reviews

Overall impression Reviewers consistently describe Woodland Hill as a clean, new, and well-maintained senior community with a strong emphasis on social life and amenities. The facility's grounds and interior spaces are commonly characterized as bright, inviting, and scenic, with multiple outdoor features (patio, pond, gazebo, walking paths) and a range of indoor amenities (salon, theater, wellness rooms, art/craft spaces, gift shop, chapel). Apartments are frequently described as spacious and modern — including large one-bedroom units with dens, full kitchens, and in-unit laundry — which supports independent living comfort and autonomy.

Care quality and staff Staff performance is a prominent strength in the reviews. Families and residents describe staff as compassionate, patient, and well trained; several accounts note particular competence in interacting with residents who have cognitive impairment. Reviewers praised front-line caregivers, dining staff, and management-level responsiveness; tours and move-in experiences were singled out as organized and professional. At the same time, Woodland Hill appears to operate a primary independent- and assisted-living model: reviewers who needed 24/7 skilled nursing indicated that the community's in-unit care and medical services are limited, and that transitions to higher-acuity care may be necessary if needs progress.

Dining Dining is another frequently cited strength. The on-site restaurant (Caribou Bistro), multiple dining rooms, and generally favorable comments about food quality suggest a higher-end meal experience. The community offers scheduled meals and special dining events, and reviewers appreciated the variety and presentation. However, some reviewers noted that meal plans vary by service tier (for example, two-meal options in certain packages) and that additional dining or escorting services can incur extra charges; prospective residents should clarify which meals and dining services are included in their contract.

Activities and social programming Woodland Hill presents a robust activity calendar, including wellness classes, card and board games, movie nights, live musical entertainment, monthly barbecues, church services, and regular outings using community transportation. The social environment is described as lively and family-like. A recurring caveat is reduced programming on weekends in some cases, so families who prioritize weekend activities should confirm the schedule before committing.

Facilities and location The physical plant is frequently described as new and well kept, with thoughtfully organized apartment kitchens and bathrooms and multiple communal spaces. The property's proximity to a hospital and nearby cities/activities is noted as a practical convenience. Some reviewers expressed aesthetic reservations about the exterior architecture or curb appeal — a subjective but recurring comment — while others emphasized the positive landscaping and accessible outdoor amenities.

Management, pricing, and notable patterns Reviewers generally view management and tour staff as attentive and professional. The main operational concerns center on cost and fee transparency: Woodland Hill is positioned at a premium price point, and multiple reviewers referenced a la carte charges (escort fees, administrative or paperwork fees, and other add-ons). This creates a pattern where the base monthly rate may not reflect the total monthly cost once necessary services are added. Another clear pattern is the potential gap between independent-living expectations and the need for 24/7 skilled nursing care; families should plan for how advancing care needs would be managed and whether additional moves or higher-acuity services would be required.

Recommendations for prospective families Ask for an itemized fee schedule and a clear description of which services are included for the specific apartment/service tier. Confirm the community's continuum-of-care options and transfer protocols for residents who require around-the-clock skilled nursing. Verify weekend activity schedules and which dining options are included versus billed separately. Finally, arrange an in-person tour of the specific unit types of interest and speak with staff about dementia-care practices if cognitive support is a likely future need. Overall, Woodland Hill appears to offer strong staffing, amenities, and a social environment, balanced against premium costs and a need to confirm care and fee details for long-term planning.

The facility is managed by Presbyterian Homes & Services and emphasizes a Christian ministry, with kind and innovative services provided to all residents along with spiritual care and the chance to meet with a campus pastor if wanted. Residents can find specialized Parkinson's care, palliative care, home health care, hospice care, short-term rehab, and long-term health care, and 24-hour skilled nursing services are available at the Lyngblomsten Care Center, so people with high care needs can get help right when it's needed, and there's also a DaVita Dialysis Clinic on-site for those who need dialysis. Those who want independent living will discover apartments like one-bedroom, one-bedroom plus sunroom or den, and two-bedroom, each with a month-to-month lease and in-unit laundry, and the assisted living side has studios, one-bedroom, one-bedroom plus den or sunroom, and two-bedroom with two-bath apartments, all with options for personal care such as bathing, dressing, housekeeping, scheduled van transportation, and an emergency call system, plus two meals included daily. Memory care apartments come with secured entrances, different apartment types, a highest "Late" memory care support, and month-to-month leases, and all the apartments have kitchen appliances as well as cable, internet, and laundry services included.

Meals are available throughout the community-two a day in assisted living, with options to buy meals in independent living-and if a resident wants, guest meals can be arranged as well, and with communal dining and a general store, there's always a place to eat or pick up necessities. The maintenance-free lifestyle includes on-site maintenance, lawn care, and snow removal, which means residents aren't responsible for these chores. The community supports people of all backgrounds and needs, with payment options like checks, credit cards, insurance, home sale and financial guidance, and offers help for veterans through VA Aid Assistance. Parking is in a heated underground garage with a $60 per month fee, and pet owners in independent living can bring dogs or cats under 20 pounds for a $500 deposit. Residents stay comfortable with smoke-free buildings, oak cabinetry, and amenities like a library, chapel, club lounge, art studio, fitness center, business office, movie theater, gardens, walking paths, aquatic area with hot tub and spa, and hobby or craft rooms, as well as a meditation space and on-site salon.

There are monthly health and wellness clinics and wellness programs including yoga, stretching, and instructor-led fitness classes like cardio drumming, plus scheduled outings, shopping trips, and facilitated activities like arts and crafts, literary and music programs, and organized entertainment in venues both inside and out. Housekeeping, linen, and laundry/linen services are provided, and residents can find structured activities, emergency call equipment in case of need, and technology like telephone services and Wifi. There's on-site nursing staff (part-time), initial assessments, regular nurse care, medication reminders, and clinical records kept current. The personal care fee is $12 per day and covers things like bathing help, dressing, and meal prep, while other services include maintenance, snow removal, and lawn work. The campus holds a Minnesota state license number 16010 and offers secured and supportive options for those needing memory care.

While Woodland Hill encourages people to visit, schedule tours to meet staff and residents, and see firsthand how the community operates, it's clear that the place focuses on providing different levels of support, safety, spiritual care, and comfort, so older adults can live as fully as possible, whether it's for a short period of time recovering or over the long term, and families can know there's skilled and compassionate help available for all kinds of needs.
