    Compassionate skilled care, would recommend

I placed my mom at The Villa and was very pleased - compassionate, skilled nurses and rehab, helpful staff and management, great food, many activities, attentive med/weight monitoring and hospice support; her health needs were met and I would recommend it. My only caveat: it wasn't a fit for my brother (heavy smoker/noncompliant), and I've heard isolated issues about staff communication, missed appointments, safety concerns and high cost.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the review summaries is predominantly positive, with many reviewers praising the staff, clinical teams, and overall level of care at Benedictine Living Community La Crosse. Multiple reviews highlight patient, compassionate nursing and caregiving, a supportive community atmosphere, and staff who go "above and beyond." Specific clinical strengths called out repeatedly include tailored dementia care, an exceptional head nurse, strong hospice support, and an excellent rehabilitation team. Reviewers commonly noted that health needs were well met, medications and weights were monitored, and families felt their loved ones were well cared for.

Staff and interpersonal care emerge as the facility's strongest themes. Descriptions such as "helpful," "friendly," "compassionate," and "very patient" appear across many summaries. Several reviews single out individual staff members and management positively — including a personable housing director and good management — and reviewers report that staff were attentive to families and residents. Hospice and nursing leadership are highlighted as exceptional in at least one account, and numerous reviewers explicitly recommend the facility based on staff quality and responsiveness.

Clinical services and amenities are also praised. The rehab team receives specific commendation for quality therapy and outcomes, while food and dining are described positively by more than one reviewer. The facility offers many activities and enjoyable amenities, and several accounts emphasize active monitoring of clinical indicators (medications, weights) — suggesting an organized approach to ongoing care needs. For families seeking dementia-specific programming, reviews indicate there is tailored dementia care available, and the community is described as supportive for families navigating end-of-life or progressive care needs.

However, there are important negative reports that temper the overall positive impression. At least one review describes serious failures: poor care quality, unmet needs, safety concerns, communication problems with staff, missed medical appointments, high costs, and an eventual discharge or "kicked out" outcome. This account contrasts sharply with the majority of positive reviews and represents a significant outlier that potential residents and families should note and investigate further. Multiple summaries also point to challenges with residents who have behavioral issues — specifically a reviewer whose brother was a heavy smoker and would not comply with smoking rules — indicating the community enforces policies that may make it a poor fit for noncompliant behaviors.

Management and communication show mixed signals: while some reviewers cite good management and personable leadership, others report problems with staff communication and coordination that led to missed appointments and unmet needs. Cost is mentioned as a concern in at least one report, framed as "high cost." The juxtaposition of multiple glowing accounts of compassionate care with a serious negative report suggests variability in resident experiences, which may be influenced by individual clinical complexity, behavioral issues, or expectations about rule enforcement and cost.

In summary, Benedictine Living Community La Crosse is generally portrayed as a compassionate, well-staffed community with particular strengths in nursing, dementia programming, hospice support, and rehabilitation. Families frequently praise the staff's attitude and the community's supportive feel, and many reviewers indicate they would choose it again. Nonetheless, prospective residents and families should perform due diligence: ask about policies for behavioral issues (including smoking), clarify billing and cost expectations, request details on incident reporting and continuity of care (to address concerns about missed appointments), and, if possible, speak with current families to understand consistency of care. The reviews suggest a facility that, for most residents, delivers high-quality, attentive care, but with at least one serious negative experience that warrants targeted questions during the tour and admission process.

    About Benedictine

Benedictine Living Community La Crosse is managed by Benedictine.

Benedictine, established in 1985 by the Benedictine Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery in Duluth, Minnesota, has grown into one of the largest Catholic senior living organizations in the United States, operating over 35 communities across Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Missouri. With annual revenues reaching billion, approximately 5,000 employees, and over million of senior living assets under management, this faith-based nonprofit organization has experienced significant expansion from a single skilled nursing facility to a multi-state healthcare network through strategic acquisitions, partnerships, sponsorship transitions, and joint ventures.

Under the leadership of President and CEO Jerry Carley, who joined in 2018 bringing over 35 years of senior care experience, Benedictine has maintained its position as an industry leader while preserving its Catholic heritage and mission-driven focus. Carley's leadership has earned significant recognition, including being named to The Minnesota 500 as one of the state's most powerful executives (2018-2020) and designation as one of Minnesota's Most Influential Health Care Leaders by Minnesota Physician Magazine in 2020. His extensive background includes previous roles as president and CEO of CSJ Initiatives and service on LeadingAge Minnesota's board of directors, where he serves as Chair.

Benedictine's innovative memory care program exemplifies their commitment to specialized care through two distinct neighborhoods: Tabitha, named after Sister Tabitha who was the first woman to head a hospital setting, which serves residents with mild to moderate memory loss, and Pauline, honoring Sister Pauline who devoted her life to dementia care, providing specialized support for those with moderate to advanced dementia. These research-based programs employ best practices in dementia care, offering engaging activities, personalized care plans, and family integration support. The organization's comprehensive service continuum extends to Adult Day Programs in Duluth and Winona, providing daytime respite care with trained memory care staff, while facilities like Benedictine Minneapolis specialize in complex medical care including tracheostomy and ventilator support.

The organization's care philosophy centers on nurturing mind, body, and spirit, rooted in Benedictine values of Hospitality, Stewardship, Respect, and Justice. This holistic approach emphasizes listening with the "ear of the heart," creating welcoming environments where unique needs are respected and each person's spirituality is honored. Through comprehensive rehabilitation services, spiritual care programs led by Director of Spiritual Care Rev. J. Scott Cartwright, and purposeful recreation incorporating art, music therapy, and movement, Benedictine continues the healthcare ministry begun by the Benedictine Sisters over a century ago. Recent strategic decisions, including the 2024 transition of Benedictine Living Community-Wausau to The Ensign Group, demonstrate the organization's commitment to ensuring sustainable, high-quality care while adapting to evolving market dynamics and maintaining their mission of empowering older adults to live to their highest potential.
