    Warm caring staff, comfortable home

I placed my mom here and overall I'm very pleased - the staff are warm, helpful, and attentive, the place is clean and home-like, and the small community offers lots of activities (bingo, church, gardening, outings, pet visits) with a full-time nurse and activities coordinator. My mom is happy, social, and well cared for; meals are usually good but quality and temperature can be inconsistent. I appreciated prompt tours, reliable laundry and transport, and staff who know our family - it's a relief to feel she's in good hands. A few concerns: occasional bad smells in the halls, an instance of poor staff grooming, and some paperwork/POA handling that could be tighter. Overall I would recommend it - great people and a comforting environment with a few areas to improve.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across reviews is largely positive about the people and daily life at LakeHouse Lake Mills, with recurring praise for the staff, cleanliness, and activity programming, but there are consistent and specific concerns about dining quality, occasional operational lapses, and some management/consent issues.

Care quality and clinical oversight: Multiple reviewers highlighted dependable, attentive care and a consistent nursing presence (reviewers specifically noted a full-time nurse). Many reviews describe staff as caring, responsive, and proactive about health monitoring; prompt communication with families and strong resident-staff relationships were named repeatedly. Several family members expressed relief and confidence that loved ones were in good hands. At the same time, there are a few troubling operational/clinical observations reported by reviewers — examples include residents being moved without proper authority, power-of-attorney (POA) procedures not always being followed, and plans or decisions discussed with POAs without the resident present. Those reports point to potential lapses in resident advocacy and consent practices that prospective families should investigate further.

Staff, culture and communication: The staff receive the most consistent praise: reviewers call them hardworking, friendly, smiling, helpful and informative. Many reports single out teamwork across janitorial, caregiving, kitchen and management, and note that staff often know residents’ families and preferences, contributing to a home-like, small-community atmosphere. Admissions staff were described as honest and helpful. However, a minority of reviews raise concerns about staff appearance and hygiene (comments about body odor or unwashed appearance), and some described witnessing residents feeding one another or staff feeding a resident — observations families should clarify during a visit. Staffing levels were reported as short-handed at times, which may affect service consistency.

Dining and food service: Dining is a clear mixed area. Several reviewers praised generous, appealing meals, good presentation when the cook is skilled, and availability of snacks, iced water and coffee. There's specific appreciation for cooks who do well and for instances where meals are impressive. Conversely, many reviewers complained about inconsistent food quality: bland or plain menu items (plain rice and noodles), thick or poorly textured soups, lukewarm meals, small portions, and limited dietary options for people with special needs. Presentation and temperature were called out as recurring problems. A few reviews noted improvement when a new part-time cook was on duty, suggesting that food quality may be highly dependent on particular staff members or scheduling.

Activities and social life: Activity programming is a strong positive across reviews. The facility reportedly has a full-time activities coordinator and an active calendar: chair exercises, bingo, church services, baking, patio and raised garden beds, pet visits, lunch outings and larger trips were all mentioned. Several reviewers said activities have improved from little or none to fun and thoughtful programming. The small-community, social atmosphere — with opportunities for volunteering and social groups — is frequently highlighted as enhancing residents’ quality of life.

Facilities and amenities: Physical spaces and services generally receive praise. Reviewers mentioned clean rooms and bathrooms, a large common area with TV, a library, transportation for medical appointments, a beauty salon/barbershop with regular visits, and per-person laundry service. The layout and dining room were called attractive by some. A few negatives were noted about the physical plant: occasional disgusting or strong smells in hallways, some rooms not being suitable for handicapped needs, limited views due to construction or surrounding homes, and distance for some families to visit. Pet accommodation was noted positively by some (staff helping with pets), but others raised pet-policy liability concerns.

Management and administrative concerns: Many reviewers say management is responsive and attentive; others raised serious concerns about administrative decisions and adherence to proper procedures. The most significant recurring issue is the handling of resident moves and communication with POAs — reports that residents were moved without proper authority and that POA procedures were not consistently followed are notable red flags. A few reviewers also described management not intervening when problems arose. These patterns, though not universal across reviews, represent important areas for prospective families to question and verify during tours and meetings with leadership.

Overall impressions and value: Numerous reviewers highly recommend LakeHouse Lake Mills, often citing the staff, cleanliness, activities, and the home-like atmosphere; one reviewer summarized an overall impression around 4.3/5. Positive testimonials about individualized care, consistent nurses, and improved activities contribute to a generally favorable picture. At the same time, the facility receives recurring criticisms around food quality, occasional staffing or hygiene lapses, and administrative/consent issues; a few reviewers judged the cost to be high relative to perceived value. Prospective residents and families should weigh the strong person-centered care and active programming against the variable dining experience and investigate the specific governance and POA/consent practices further.

Practical recommendations for prospective families: Visit during meal times and on multiple days to assess food consistency; ask directly about dietary accommodations and who is responsible for menu oversight. Meet with nursing and management to discuss staffing levels, the full-time nurse role, and protocols for moves and POA involvement; request written policies on consent and resident transfers. Tour accessible rooms if mobility is a concern, and ask about hallway ventilation and odor-control measures. Finally, ask how the facility handles pet policies and liability if that is important to your family. The reviews suggest LakeHouse Lake Mills offers a warm, activity-rich environment with many caring staff, but prospective residents should seek clarity on food service consistency and administrative safeguards before committing.
