    Excellent independent living, alarming skilled-nursing

I had mixed experiences. The independent-living side was excellent - gourmet, artful dining and very caring, professional staff with organized therapy and social services - but the skilled-nursing side alarmed me: tiny, equipment-crowded rooms with poor wheelchair access, different/poorer meals, cleanliness and urine smells, understaffing and neglect that led to serious consequences. Photos are misleading; I recommend the independent-living team but strongly warn others about the skilled-nursing care.

    Summary review

The reviews present a strongly mixed picture of Capitol Lakes Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation, with clear strengths in dining (for independent living), therapy services, and pockets of very attentive clinical care, alongside serious and concerning complaints about skilled nursing accommodation, cleanliness, and care consistency.

Dining and environment: reviewers repeatedly praise the independent living dining room, describing the food as gourmet and the setting as artful. That praise suggests a high-quality dining experience for independent living residents. However, there is a marked discrepancy reported between independent living dining and what is provided in skilled nursing: several reviewers note that skilled nursing residents receive different meals that are not the same as the independent-living fare. This perceived inequity is an important theme because it directly affects resident satisfaction and suggests a divide in resource allocation or operational practices between modalities.

Care quality and staff: many reviewers commend the clinical and therapy staff—nursing and adjunct staff are described as caring, professional, and well organized. Social services, physical therapy, and occupational therapy are singled out positively, with some reviewers calling therapy “outstanding.” Several comments emphasize attentive staff and a cohesive care team, and some reviewers explicitly highly recommend the facility based on those experiences. These positive comments point to strong aspects of the facility’s clinical program and interdisciplinary coordination.

Serious concerns and inconsistency: alongside praise, there are severe negative reports that cannot be overlooked. Complaints include neglect, inadequate staffing, poor care quality, and at least one allegation of a death connected with care concerns. Multiple reviewers report cleanliness problems—specifically fecal and urine odors in rooms and hallways—and describe skilled nursing rooms as too small and cluttered with medical equipment, which impedes wheelchair maneuverability. Reviewers also say photos are misleading, implying that marketing materials do not accurately reflect the on-site conditions. Together, these issues indicate significant variability in resident experience and potential systemic problems in skilled nursing areas.

Facilities and accessibility: specific facility-related criticisms focus on the physical layout and condition of skilled nursing rooms. Small rooms crowded with equipment reduce accessibility for residents using wheelchairs and may increase safety risks or impede care delivery. Cleanliness problems extend beyond aesthetics to health and dignity concerns. In contrast, the independent living areas (notably the dining room) are painted in a much better light, reinforcing the pattern that independent living and skilled nursing experiences may differ substantially.

Overall pattern and implications: the dominant pattern is one of polarization—some reviewers describe exemplary, compassionate care and excellent therapy, while others report neglect, dangerous conditions, and serious hygiene problems. This inconsistency suggests either variable staffing/oversight across shifts or wings, or differences in expectations and experiences between independent living and skilled nursing populations. Given the gravity of some complaints (odor of bodily waste, reports of neglect and death), these negative reports should be treated as significant red flags for prospective residents and families.

In summary, Capitol Lakes Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation appears to offer high-quality dining in independent living and strong therapy and some very caring clinical teams. However, there are recurring and serious complaints about skilled nursing room size and layout, cleanliness (notably fecal/urine odors), unequal dining experiences between levels of care, and reports of neglect and inadequate staffing. The net impression is mixed: prospective residents should weigh the positive testimonials about staff and therapy against the severe and recurring facility and care concerns, verify current conditions in person, and ask targeted questions about skilled nursing room size, cleaning protocols, staffing levels, and how meals are managed across care levels.

About Capitol Lakes Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation

Capitol Lakes Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation sits right in a bigger life plan community, so folks can move between independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing care all in one place, and you don't need to already live there to get started in one area or another, which isn't something you see everywhere. The skilled nursing and rehab part provides 24-hour staff support with nurses and caregivers always on duty, and they help with things like medication, bathing, getting dressed, and daily activities if you need it, and for high needs like diabetic care, wound care, IV therapy, and incontinence help, there's specialized staff and therapists for that. The place brings in visiting behavioral health folks and has a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist creating daily activities, art shows, fitness classes, games, and music programs for people to enjoy together, with a big focus on wellness through fitness programs, yoga, and swimming in the Aquatic and Wellness Center, which has multiple pools and space for therapy and exercise, which some people really like if staying active matters to them. Rooms come furnished, and little things like private bathrooms, kitchenettes, wheelchair-accessible showers, cable TV, phones, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi are already there, so you can settle in easy, and a housekeeping and laundry service is part of the deal, so you or your family don't have to worry about that. There are two on-campus restaurants where chefs prepare meals that fit special diets, like for diabetes or allergies, and they offer vegetarian and kosher choices when needed, and the dining works all day, so folks can eat when they want and the setting feels like a regular restaurant, not a cafeteria. Outside, people walk in the gardens and along the paths, and there are patios for sitting, maybe with a pet since pets are allowed, and you see folks tending plants, reading, or just getting some fresh air. The building has a library, business rooms, a spa, a game room, and plenty of gathering spaces for families who visit, and if people need to get out, there's transportation and parking available, plus discounted rates and priority access for residents moving through the levels of care. Respite stays work for short-term help, maybe after surgery or hospital visits, and for more permanent needs, the staff has specialists for Alzheimer's and dementia care, with a focus on keeping routines comfortable and as independent as someone can be. Capitol Lakes doesn't ask for an entrance fee for Assisted Living, Memory Support, or Skilled Nursing, and the place has a history as a non-profit, with licensed nurses and staff numbers that meet or beat state requirements, and there's always a way to get in touch if something's urgent, since emergency call systems run 24 hours a day. The atmosphere stays social but folks get privacy too, with options to personalize rooms a bit and choose upgraded features, and the staff can coordinate move-ins to make the change simpler for families. Some say it gets a 3.0 rating in reviews, and while it isn't perfect, it covers a lot of ground for older adults looking for a safe, steady place that can handle different kinds of health needs without a lot of fuss.
