    Warm staff, excellent care, pricey

I was impressed by the warm, passionate staff, excellent nursing care, home-cooked meals, engaging activities, great communication, and a clean, recently remodeled Alzheimer-focused setting where my dad's health improved and residents seemed encouraged to participate. That said, rooms are very small with no showers, staff appeared overburdened with high turnover and didn't ask about my dad's preferences, and an alarm and dog sometimes made it feel unprofessional - it's also fairly pricey.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The reviews collectively portray Elijah's Place as a small, home-like memory care community that delivers strong clinical and day-to-day care, especially praised for attentive nursing, passionate staff, and a warm, respectful atmosphere. Multiple reviewers use words like "extraordinary," "outstanding," and "model for others" when describing the quality of care and staff commitment. The facility's small size and Alzheimer’s specialization are repeatedly framed as positives that support individualized attention, a family-like environment, and improved health and wellbeing for some residents.

Care quality and staff: The dominant theme across reviews is high-quality care delivered by attentive, enthusiastic, and respectful staff. Reviewers consistently note excellent nursing care, safety-focused practices, and teamwork among staff members. Families and residents report feeling cared for, with several comments indicating that residents' health improved under the facility’s care. Communication with families is described positively, and staff are characterized as passionate and warm. At the same time, there are consistent notes about staff being overloaded — performing cooking, cleaning, and direct care tasks — which raises questions about workload and sustainability despite the overall praise for care outcomes.

Facilities and physical environment: Multiple reviewers compliment the facility’s cleanliness, recent remodeling, and well-maintained, safe environment. The small population size contributes to a home-like setting that many reviewers appreciate. However, a recurring physical concern is the small size of rooms and the absence of showers in many rooms; several reviewers flagged rooms as "very small" and noted lack of in-room showers as a practical limitation. While reviewers generally report the environment feeling safe and healthy, the constrained room size is a tangible drawback that may affect personal comfort and long-term suitability for some residents.

Dining and activities: Dining and activities are clear strengths. Reviewers praise home-cooked meals and characterize the dining as excellent. Activities programming is described as engaging and well-executed, with residents encouraged to participate and respond positively. These elements contribute to the home-like feel and to resident satisfaction reported in multiple summaries.

Management, professionalism, and other concerns: While many reviews praise staff quality, there are a few notable critiques around professionalism and personalization. Some reviewers reported an "unprofessional ambiance" caused by audible alarms and the presence of a dog, which affected their perception in specific instances. There are also comments about a lack of personalized intake or failure to ask about a resident's specific situation or preferences, indicating occasional lapses in individualized admission processes. High staff turnover was mentioned by at least one reviewer, which could undermine continuity of care over time. A few reviewers also noted that the facility can be pricey, suggesting that perceived value may vary by family expectations and budget.

Net assessment and patterns: In aggregate, the reviews lean strongly positive on clinical care, staff engagement, safety, meals, and activities, with consistent emphasis on the warm, home-like character of the setting and its Alzheimer’s specialization. The most significant and recurring negatives relate to the physical limitations of the facility (small rooms and lack of showers), occasional lapses in personalized intake or professionalism, and evidence of staff being stretched thin — plus reported turnover and cost concerns. Prospective residents and families who prioritize excellent nursing care, a small, intimate environment, and strong activities/dining programs are likely to view Elijah's Place favorably. Those for whom larger private rooms, in-room bathing, consistently formal professionalism, or lower cost are critical may want to probe these specific issues during tours and discussions with management.

    About Elijah's Place

Elijah's Place in Oshkosh, WI is a secured dementia care community that sits at 1551 Southland Avenue and is built to serve people who have Alzheimer's, dementia, and other memory loss conditions, so the staff there understand how some folks might wander, have behavioral challenges, or go through confusion and social withdrawal, and they keep the property secure using alarm bracelets and dedicated care to help keep everyone safe. The building itself is purpose-built for memory care-it's got private bedrooms with personal bathrooms, wheelchair accessible showers, a central living area where people can gather, spaces for activities like planting, grilling and relaxing, plus indoor and outdoor areas to enjoy some sun or shade, and meals are available any time of day so no one has to worry about missing out if their schedule's different, and diets like gluten-free, low sodium, and low sugar can be provided when needed. The community brings in nurses, visiting therapists, a doctor on call, and has 24-hour awake staff to handle health needs or keep an eye out, and some staff can help with extra challenges, like folks who need help transferring with a lift, or managing insulin and blood sugar checks, or when someone needs help with both daily and complicated tasks that sometimes just get harder with age. Residents can take part in devotional services, attend chapel, join planned events, and participate in innovative programs like Cycling Without Age, Namaste Care, Noah's Landing, and Healing Touch, plus there's a beauty salon/barbershop, spa with whirlpool bath, community dining, a kitchen with a stove and refrigerator, and even a hearing loop for those who need it. Elijah's affiliated with Lutheran Homes of Oshkosh, so it leans into a holistic philosophy that recognizes everyone's physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, helps people be involved in activities and home-cooked meals, and supports living with purpose every day, even for those with behavioral or medical needs that require both light and heavy care, and families can find things like resources for funeral planning, veterans services, urns and keepsakes, and other end-of-life arrangements, with additional supports like transport, parking, guest rooms, and respite care available as needed.
